Stevie Nicks
The Enchanted Works Of Stevie Nicks, Disc Two
1998
*1. Edge Of Seventeen (previously unreleased live version)*
I no longer have the studio version of this, which I could almost shoot myself for. But this is great. The mother of all guitar riffs... I love the one verse with the heavy background from Sharon and Lori. Their harmonies with Stevie are amazing.
*2. Street Angel*
This has some good harmonies from David Crosby. Who would've guessed? *shrugs* I've always liked this song, but I think the last verse is my favorite.
"So I ended it all for the both of us...I fell down the stairs a broken rag doll..."
3. Rock A Little (Go Ahead Lily)
Great bass here.
"That is how songs are written...Stories are told, rumours are started"
4. I Sing For The Things
Not bad, but not really a favorite. The lyrics are the strongest part of the song to me.
*5. Rooms On Fire*
Excellent. I love Stevie's vocals here especially, and the imagery in the lyrics is fantastic. Hey, and Stevie does some percussion here.
6. I Can't Wait (extended rock mix)
This one is always pleasing to the ears, but sitting and reading the lyrics kind of gives the song new perspective.
"I can't wait...How would I love you...How will you feel ten years from now..."
7. Two Kinds Of Love duet with Bruce Hornsby
"Great temptations never really die..." I just have to let that line express my sentiments on this one.
8. The Highwayman
Great background vocals from Don Henley on this beautiful song about dreaming of the one you love until you meet again in heaven - at least that's what I get from this.
*9. Rose Garden*
One of my top favorites, Stevie wrote this when she was merely 17 but didn't record it until nearly thirty years later. This is played simply with lots of acoustic guitar, which sounds fantastic. I love these lyrics so much...
"Now I've a big house...with pillars standing tall all around...Yeah, and I've got a garden...and it's got roses dangling down to the ground...Yes, and I've got money...men to love me and acres of land...Well, I've got all these things...all these things but a small gold band...on my finger...on my left hand..."
*10. Talk To Me*
A perfect pop-rock track. I love everything about this. Written by Chas Sanford, he also did most of the instruments here. Stevie's vocals are outstanding, especially on the lines "Let the walls burn down, set your secrets free...You can break their bounds 'cause you're safe with me...You can lose your doubt 'cause you'll find no danger here..."
11. Destiny
Interesting track that I really like. Borrowed lyrics from "Enchanted" help to intertwine Stevie's songs even more.
*12. Ooh My Love*
IMO, Stevie's most underrated song. A solid winner from The Other Side Of The Mirror that goes right up there with "Talk To Me". I may even like it more. I love the orchestration and the lyrics and Stevie's voice is gorgeous on this. *sigh* Fantastic!!
*13. Desert Angel*
This song was on Stevie's 1991 Timespace: Best Of. It's a song of the period, obviously being about the Gulf War. It's just recently become a major favorite of mine. There's really great piano on this and I love Stevie's vocals.
14. Whole Lotta Trouble
Cool orchestration, especially in the intro. Also, another example of crossover lyrics:
"You're not my friend...You're not my love...and this is something that we really don't discuss..."
This lyric appears again in "Thousand Days" on disc three.
*15. Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You*
Wonderful piano backs the longing lyrics of this ballad. So pretty.
