This review has been a long time in coming. And you're getting my first impressions on each song, seeing as how I'm listening to it for the first time as I write this review. So far it has been everything I hoped...
Christine McVie
In The Meantime
2004
1. Friend
Although I haven't finished the album yet, this track is leaving such an impression on me that it will probably be my favorite track. It had me hooked from the first notes. Excellent keyboard and some of Christine's strongest vocals. I love the beat behind this chorus.
2. You Are
A little less driving than the last song, but still very steady. Christine's keyboard here, again, is excellent. And what do you know? All the lyrics are enclosed! Score!
3. Northern Star
Nice, mellow love song written by Christine's nephew, Dan Perfect. This song's a lot better from beginning to end. The first time I sampled it, I wasn't too impressed. They picked up the song right in the middle of an uneasy note - not bad, it just sounds sour to start off with.
4. Bad Journey
I love the lyrics on this, although I admit I snickered when I heard Christine say "Gitche Gumee". Very cool bass here. Still not disappointed in anything yet.
5. Anything Is Possible
Again, love this bass. Oh, and I just heard a guitar wail that made me shiver. Ah.
6. Calumny
Another one written by Dan. This one almost reminded me of poppish-sounding country song until I heard some calypso-like piano. It's hard to describe, but very nice. I really like this one. By the way, I had to look this up because I had no idea what calumny was: slander, defamation, detraction - see LIE. Kind of gives the song new meaning.
7. So Sincere
Ah, excellent jazzy piano on the beginning of this. Great guitar by Dan here. He even does backing vocals in addition to that and his songwriting. This guy could put out his own solo album. Musical talent obviously runs in the family.
8. Easy Come, Easy Go
Written by Christine and Ed Quintela, same guy she wrote Little Lies and Skies The Limit with. This definitely has a deeper rock sound than either of those. More great guitar.
9. Liar
Favorite line: "Liar, you're the Jack of Hearts." The rest of the song sits very well in comparison.
10. Sweet Revenge
This song sounds a little too light to hold this title, but the lyrics are delightfully cynical. Gotta love it.
"If we can't be lovers...then we really can't be friends...I got some pretty wicked ways...to get my sweet revenge."
Actually, if you listen carefully enough, you can pick up an entire relationship tale throughout the course of this album. Cool.
11. Forgiveness
More cool lyrics. It's evident what the Mac is missing. Christine's songwriting was always one of the group's strongsuits. But then again, everything about them could be constituted as a strongsuit.
12. Givin' It Back
Billy Burnette has co-writing credits on this and provides background vocals. Love the percussion on this.
Okay, everybody needs to go buy this album right now. I know my comments probably didn't do it much justice, but this is excellent work from Christine. As long as I waited for the release of this album to finally culminate, it was well worth it.
