Remember these, guys?
I mentioned to Ken yesterday about how I still needed to do a review of one of the Volumes of those compilation CD's that the local DJ put out. (Actually, I thought I still needed to do 2, but I checked today, and I have already done 2!) So I told Ken I would do it today!
Remember, this particular DJ has been working for all the different rock/classic rock/timeless rock stations in Chicago for over 20 years. He has a regular show called Rock and Roll Roots. He digs deep for 60's and early 70's songs you don't hear as much. He had so many requests, he has put out many of the popular faves out on CD's. I think he is up to Volume 6, but I only bought the first 3.
Four songs made their CD debut on this disc!!
These were only available in the Chicago area, and for a limited time.
Bob Stroud's Classic Rock Roots Volume III
2000
1. Evil Woman Don't Play Your Games With Me-Crow
So glad to have this on disc! Great hard rocker that for some reason has been unjustly ignored on classic rock radio! If they can play Mississippi Queen, why not this one? The thing is, I only slightly knew how this went when I got the disc, having only heard it a couple times in my life.
2. My Little Red Book-Love
This was my first taste of Love. That's Love, not love. I already wanted to hear them, this made me want to even more. This is quite different from the rest of their catalog, which makes sense since it was written by Burt Bachrach! Great 60's garage sound on it though.
3. Baby, Come Back-The Equals
One of the lesser good ones on here for me. I just don't do reggae, mon. Eddy Grant was in this group, but it seems I remember Dave saying it's not him singing lead? Still not an awful song.
4. Tomorrow-Strawberry Alarm Clock
People all know Incense and Peppermints so well, this has been forgotten in time. I never heard of it until this collection! I&P is such a classic, it's hard to say this is better, but it's DAMN close! Great psychedelic sound & harmonies on this one.
5. Charity Ball-Fanny
Never had even heard of this punk girl band before this collection! This sort of was a template for the Runaways! Great guitar work on it. This was the first ever appearance on CD. Rhino has since put out their stuff, but Stroud got it on disc first.
6. Two Hangmen-Mason Proffit
Yet another song on here I really like that I never knew before! Never would have made it on AM, this was apparently a big FM hit because of it's anti-war undertones. Really cool song that starts out mellow and has a great repetitive ending. Then these guys went on to Christian rock!
7. Superman-Ides of March
You know Vehicle? This is it, rewritten. From the way Peterik sings, to the horns, to the rewrite of "Great God in Heaven" as "Great Cesar's Ghost". Nowhere near the hit the former was. Well known around Chicago of course. Another first appearance on CD.
8. Suavecito-Malo
Yep, another I only knew by title before this collection. There was some discussion who he was, Santana's brother or cousin. He's Carlos' brother. Didn't like it at first but it's cool song with good harmonies. Has the Latin flavor but not too heavy. Full length 6 1/2 minute version!
9. My World Fell Down-Sagittarius
And again, didn't know this before! And last time I did the INSANE list, it was ranked very poorly. It's now one of my faves on the disc! Basically a studio band, and apparently Bruce Johnston and another one time Beach Boy, Glen Campbell are both one it. Does have a BB sound to it. Great middle "freak out" section that was so popular at the time with sounds like Susan by the Buckinghams and A Day in the Life. So glad to have this!
10. Hold On-Mauds
This was another Chicago act. Not sure what kindof national success they had. This is a cover of the Sam & Dave classic. Not sure if the official record leaves off the I'm-a Comin' or it's just this disc, which also lists track 1 as just Evil Woman. Anyhow, this is a very sped up, horn dominated, more rockin' version of the soul song. Another first time on disc appearance!
11. Israelites-Desmond Dekker & the Aces
Ok, this beats out The Equals as the worst song on here. Pretty annoying and it brings down the collection a notch.
12. Walk Tall-2 of Clubs
That's how the group's title is written, not "Two". Quite possibly my fave girl group song of all time. This was a bit past the girl group era, 1967, which is probably why it didn't do well on Billboard. But it's great because it has such attitude while still retaining the earlier girl group sound. The fourth and final first CD appearance on here.
I go back and forth which I like more, this or Volume II. Both are so great!
Go back to my reviews on 10/28 & 6/10 and compare and decide which you like best!
Hope you enjoyed the review!
