Artist - Emitt Rhodes
Title - Emitt Rhodes
Year Of Release - 1970
Label - Dunhill
Produced by - Emitt Rhodes & Harvey Bruce
Peak chart position - #29
Singles released - Fresh as a Daisy (#54 - 1971)
CD Reissue - 1993
Label - One Way
Emitt was a member of the 60's band The Merry Go Round who had a #63 hit with Live and a #94 hit with You're a Very Lovely Woman both in 1967. The Merry Go Round's drummer Joel Larson later joined The Grass Roots.
After the group split in 1969 , Emitt decided to go solo. He recorded this album in a shed next to his Mom and Dad's Garage doing everything himself - playing the instruments writing and mixing the songs etc, it took him six months . The record is a pop masterpiece and was very well recieved. The album was (and still is) often compared to Paul McCartney's debut LP. I have a copy on both vinyl and CD
With My Face On The Floor - A tune about lost love - the music is very upbeat however with a cool little guitar solo.
Somebody Made For Me - A song about finding that special someone - nice two part harmonies with hooks galore.
She's Such a Beauty - Nice catchy piano on the intro. nice simple solid drumming (Emitt started out as a drummer).Very uplifting song.
Long Time No See - Some minor piano chords start the song off. The bass playing is very McCartneyesque. Some killer guitar too . This is one of my big faves.
Lullabye - A beautiful song done very simply with just acoustic guitar and vocal - it's also a very short song - only a 1:08 long - but it's oh so good . I understand this was used in the movie The Royal Tenenbaums.
Fresh as a Daisy - The "hit" from the album and it's a great one. The drums and piano real push the song along. You'll be humming the melody for weeks after hearing it.
Live Till You Die - Emitt's flawless vocal and some acoustic strumming opens the song. A song about dealing with life's up's and down's and remaining strong.
Promises I've Made - Some very nice electric guitar licks in the song. The melody once again is superb.
You Take The Dark Out Of The Night - A great mid tempo song that changes tempo going from the intro into the first verse. Once again his background vocals are just amazing to listen to - love em. Another winner.
You Should Be Ashamed - You can probably tell that all of his songs on the album deal with relationships and the title basically says it all. About a girl who let him down way too many times . The song is a real gem - a perfect pop tune.
Ever Find Yourself Running - Nice organ playing real adds to the song and some super drumming as well.
You Must Have - I love this so much - a very nice little ballad with a wonderful arrangement. I really like the sound of Emitt's voice as well as the way his vocal was recorded.
Well that's it! - I hope you enjoyed reading this
