Today's album is one I've enjoyed since I bought it in the mid 70's. I also thought it was good timing since Elton was on the news tonight . He was not too happy with some members of the paparazzi (sp?) in I believe Tawaiian.
Here it is

Title - Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player
Artist - Elton John
Released - 1973
Label - MCA
Peak Chart postion - #1
Singles released - Crocodile Rock (#1 - pop - 1973)
- Daniel (#2 - pop - 1973 - #1 - adult contemporary)
I remember being in I guess about Grade 5 at the time and going after school one day with my Mom and a friend and bought this album with my allowance that I'd saved .
I still have that copy of the album, and Ialways think of my mom when I listen to this). I also have the CD. Plus I have the 45 of Crocodile Rock.
Daniel - A beautiful song which I first heard on EJ's Greatest Hits LP. This I understand was written about a Vietnam soldier coming home from the war, I'm not sure if that's true. Nice electric piano and great acoustic strumming from Davey Johnstone who I feel was an excellent addition to Elton's band.
Teacher I Need You - This very quickly became one of my big faves on the album.Super piano on the intro as well as some fine bass playing (courtesy of the GREAT Dee Murray) - RIP. Nigel Olsson's drumming is (as always) first rate. Cool orchestration as well.
Eldeberry Wine - This was also the b-side to the Crocodile Rock 45. The songs rolls along very nicely. Love that brass arrangment and Nigel's snare drum accents on the outro.
Blues For Baby and Me - The second of the ballads on the album. I just love the feel of the song and I remember always singing along with it in my room - well I still do! Once again the orchestration really adds to the song as does some Sitar playing from Davey! - nice touch adding just that extra bit ( very much like what George did on Norweigan Wood).
Midnight Creeper - There is a reference to Tina Turner in the first verse of this uptempo rocker. And Davey unleashes some amazing guitar playing . and what's cool is the brass along with Davey play the same line in part of the last solo towards the end. Nigel and Dee hold it all together very well.
Have Mercy On The Criminal - A real tension filled song, but in a good way - LOL . It has a bluesy feel to it. And the whole band really lock in and play their butts off.
I'm Going To Be a Teenage Idol - A fun cool little tune with some nice playing from Elton and some terrific background vocals from Davey , Dee and Nigel.
Texas Love Song - Nice mandolin playing from Davey on this and some cool Harmonium playing from Elton (which sounds to my ears very much like an accordion) . And the first time I heard the word "Goddamit" in a song.
Crocodile Rock - A song that everyone knows! Cool 50's retro feel and a tune that still gets plenty of play on the radio:) - Still love it!
High Flying Bird - Words cannot express how much I love this song . Everything about it is superb! The lyrics (very poetic) the backing vocals , the bands playing. I played this tune alot back in the 70's and still do today
-I'm playing it at this moment while I type this.
That's it - I hope you enjoyed my review:)
