This is an album that was played alot in my house while I was growing up . My oldest brother was a big fan of Jackson's and bought the album right away.
His band used to do a cover of Running On Empty back in the late 70's and it was excellent. I bought the 45 of it at the time and played it often. The cassette I bought back in the mid 80's packed it in a year ago so I upgraded to CD finding a used copy for $5.
What was cool about the record was that it wasn't just a "live album" but rather a kind of concept album of life on the road with songs being recorded not just onstage but backstage , in Hotel rooms and hey even on the tour bus!
On to the tunes
1.Running On Empty - A great opener to the record with David Lindley playing some killer lap steel guitar and Russ Kunkel playing his heart out on the drums.
2.The Road - A song about well... the road LOL This was recorded in two locations a hotel room and onstage - then blended together . A very nice simple arrangement starts the song off featuring just acoustic guitar and fiddle then for the second half the full band is heard.
3.Rosie - A song about a groupie. Recorded very simply - piano and three voices , one of the harmonies is sung by the tour photographer - he sings it well!
One of my big faves from the album.
4.You Love The Thunder - Another one I like very much , really getting into the song when I first bought the tape. Russ and bassist Leland Sklar really lock in on the rhythm section. David again plays some very nice pedal steel.
5.Cocaine - In the 70's this seemed to be the drug of choice for many. It was written by Rev. Gary Davis and additional lyrics were written by Jackson and Glenn Frey.Nice acoustic guitar playing on this.
6.Shaky Town - A cool little track written by bandmate and Jackson buddy Danny Kortchmar who also sings harmony.
7.Love Needs a Heart - I really like the lyrics in this . Co written by Jackson , Little Feats' Lowell George and Valerie Carter. Nice harmonies by Rosemary Butler and Doug Haywood.
8.Nothing But Time - This was the b side to "Running" and the one recorded on the bus .With Russ using a carboard box for a bass drum and you can even hear the bus changing gears! The song has a great shuffle feel to it.
9.The Load Out - I would say this gets more radio airplay
than R.O.E. A neat tune I still really like and it segue's right into . . .
10. Stay - Of course this is the oldies chestnut by Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs . Back - Up singer Rosemary Butler shares vocals with Jackson.
That's all folks! - hope you enjoyed reading my review
