Artist - Alice Cooper
Title - Billion Dollar Babies
Year - 1973
Produced by - Bob Ezrin
Billboard chart position - #1
Singles released -
Elected (#26 - 1972)
Hello Hooray (#35 - 1973)
No More Mr.Nice Guy (#25 - 1973)
This was one of about six Alice Cooper albums we had around the house on 8- track when I was growing up.
Although I found him kind of creepy as a kid LOL
I liked alot of the songs including many on this album especially No More Mr. Nice Guy which I had (and still have) on a Ronco LP called Don Kirshner Presents Rock Power.
Bob Ezrin was once again in the producer's chair and this time around the album was just a bit more polished than the previous LP's but it still rocked hard.
I found a copy of the album in the early 90's with the billion dollar bill and all the pic's included on the inside cover. I also have the CD which I bought used for $7 around '93.
It was reissued on CD once again a few years back by Rhino and included a bonus disc of a live show from the Billion Dollar Babies Tour in '73.
The songs
Hello Hooray - An awesome song that opens with some dual guitar playing between Glen Buxton and Michael Bruce. The production is just great including orchestration and bells. Alice's vocal is fantastic.
Raped and Freezin' - A very strong album track that rocks from beginning to end. A big fave
Elected - This songs just seems to jump out of the speakers. Such a powerful tune with some great horn overdubs. I remember Alice mentioning in an interview that John Lennon LOVED this song. The band also shot a video for this at the time.
Billion Dollar Babies - A classic! Neal Smith kicks the song off with that killer drum pattern. The tune includes vocals by special guest - Donovan.
Unfinished Sweet - This song deals with basically the same subject matter as George Harrison's Savoy Truffle. Except in this case Alice takes a trip to the dentist. Sound effects include the sound of the drill and the pulling of the tooth. On stage the theatrics included Alice chasing a giant tooth with a toothbrush!
No More Mr.Nice Guy - I love this - everything about it is simply perfect. The whole band kicks butt especially Neal, hitting every drum and cymbal in his huge Slingerland drum kit.
Generation Landslide - The whole band had a writing credit on this song. The lyrics are great! Some very cool acoustic guitar is also heard.
Sick Things - This song was co written with Bob Ezrin. Along with I Love the Dead used to give me the creeps as a kid! The song is very slow in tempo which just adds to the creepiness.
Mary Ann - Very simple production - just piano and Alice's vocal . It's also very short clocking in at 2:19. What's odd about it is that the first half of the song plays in the left speaker only then very , very slowly pans to the right speaker until the end.
I Love The Dead - One of the most perfect tunes for Halloween and Alice really gets into it.The combination of some very haunting piano and acoustic guitar opens the song. My middle brother and one of his buddy's I remember used to know all the words to the song at one time.
Hope you enjoyed my review
