Rhino Records to release 7-CD 90's box set

ROLLING STONE:

Rhino Records will release the seven-disc box set Whatever: The '90s Pop Culture Box on July 26th. The 130-song collection follows in the tradition of the label's Have a Nice Decade: The '70s Pop Culture Box (1998) and Like, Omigod! The '80s Pop Culture Box, Totally (2002).
Whatever captures last decade's diverse sounds, from MC Hammer's hip-hop novelty song "Can't Touch This," to lighter-flicking ballads like the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Under the Bridge" and Soul Asylum's "Runaway Train," to Moby's sample-drenched and commercial ready "Natural Blues."

The set also moves easily from international superstars to the relatively obscure with Oasis, Busta Rhymes, Jewel, Sarah McLachlan, Aaliyah and En Vogue appearing alongside the likes of Luscious Jackson, Dinosaur Jr., Babes in Toyland and the Flaming Lips.

And, of course, Sir Mix-a-Lot's cultural touchtone, the booty-shaking party staple "Baby Got Back," made the cut. "I was dating this girl -- she's the girl that's actually doing the 'Oh my god' part -- and she had a huge ass," the rapper told Rolling Stone of the song's inspiration. "Little tiny waist, just a Coke bottle body. And I always liked it . . . I wanted J. Lo before J. Lo was popular."

The box set's packaging will feature a clear plastic bag of coffee beans secured by a thermal sleeve as well as an eighty-four-page book with track-by-track commentary, photos and essays.

My notes:

Looking at these tracks, I would possibly recommend this to Pete, with a smattering of alternative (read: non-chart hits) stuff on here.
Some way-overused- on-compilations tunes are here like C & C, EMF and Tag Team. Boyz II Men made it, but not contemporaries like R. Kelly & Toni Braxton? (I think Toni's a hard artist to cross-license like Madonna and Michael Jackson) And NO Spice Girls? Hootie? Also noticably absent are Nirvana and Pearl Jam (whom I'd wager would NEVER allow cross-licensing!).
Also, Adam will sadly notice there are no country artists like Martina on here, nor STP, Foos or Soundgarden but Collective Soul at LEAST.
Another "one-hit-wonder" I thought for sure would make the compilation was Dishwalla.
Well, for me, a balance of "good" and "bad" rap, and I would get this box set sometime, but not as eager about it as I was about the 70's and 80's sets.
Oh yeah---The Gits, Tad, 7 Year Bitch, Cibo Matto, Ash, and Sleater-Kinney, ANYONE?

Now one last thing, Click, who's up for a SIXTIES box set?!!! Wouldn't surprise me by 2008...

First, I don't think ANY Clickster in their right mind will say the 90's were better than the 60's, 70's, or even the 80's.

Well, I'm about half-and-half with you on your 'goodies', Adam. I just never really liked No Myth, You Gotta Be (BIG time), or Bitch, and I got WAY sick of Kiss Me on PA-overplay. The Sundays, dada, Silverchair, and Natalie Merchant I'm rather neutral on. Matthew Sweet and 4 Non-Blondes bring back the college memories (and quite a few other songs on the first 3 discs), but nothing I'd write home about. Better than Ezra, Oasis and Seven Mary 3 are quite good, but the remaining seven songs from your list are quite big faves of mine still (Deee-Lite [it'll prob. be the rap version--oh well], Jesus Jones, Black Crowes, Chili Peppers, Collective Soul, and especially the Cardigans and WEEZER!).

But those 20 songs, for better or worse, would sound quite good at the Click party!

Oh, you had to mention those three songs. (EMF, RSF, Chumba) They're all BIG guilty pleasures for me! The 90's box set had to have SOME variety?!! Throw in Tag Team, too.

Again, Rhino can't acquire licenses for all artists; there could have been a holdback for Shania--just a guess.
And you usually don't see the Beatles or Herman's Hermits on 60's compilations, either.

Kim, with you being one of the younger Clicksters, I'm glad to hear you'd be up for a 60's box set. Actually, Rhino has released a soul 60's box called "Beg, scream and shout", and a big fave here on the Click was an "American rock of the 60's" box set called "Nuggets".

I think there's too much left-of-center material here on the 90's set...

Interesting selection of songs on this collection. Many of these I'm only vaguely familiar with, but there are a number of them I enjoy, and two I absolutely love.

By disc:

Disc 1:
I got very tired of U Can't Touch This back in '90, but don't mind it as much today. Right Here, Right Now isn't bad, but also suffered from overplay at the time. Walking in Memphis hasn't held up that well for me. Hard to Handle is a good track.

Disc 2:
Silent Lucidity is a fave of mine, mainly because it sounds so much like Pink Floyd. Little Miss Can't Be Wrong is catchy. I've never liked I'm Too Sexy, though.

Disc 3:
Not familiar with most of these except for Ordinary World.

Disc 4:
Hey Jealousy is a solid tune, although I prefer I Found Out About You a little more.

Disc 5:
Shine is one of my favorites from Collective Soul. I also like Run-Around and I'll Be There for You, although they were overplayed when current. I used to have the cassingle of Carnival.

Disc 6:
Wonderwall is good, but I got a little annoyed by the band's attitude in interviews and such. I put it along with Breakfast at Tiffany's and Who Will Save Your Soul on a '90s mix cassette. In the Meantime I remember hearing once, and liking it. Standing Outside...is decent. But the one that really stands out is Virtual Insanity - absolutely loved it from first listen.

Disc 7:
Lovefool is catchy, also on a mix tape of mine. Mmmbop is a guilty pleasure, although not as much as it was at one time. Sex and Candy is ok, and Walking on the Sun is very good. I never liked Bitch much, and grew tired of Kiss Me. I absolutely love Brian Wilson - gotta love a song written about the guy in my avatar! But I actually loved this back in '98 as well, years before I became the huge fan of his I am today. I've heard that Brian himself has performed this in concert occasionally.

Bring on the '60s set!

While I'd be the first clickster to admit that the 90's were nowhere NEAR as good as the 60's, 70's or 80's, in hindsight they weren't THAT bad either (certainly better than the 00's). I got sick of a lot of these songs at the time but I've warmed up to them. Some of these choices I question, but overall it's a good mix of hits and misses, with a lot of good alternative stuff!

Most of the songs I like I have, but it's nice to see such a diversity in one place. Here's what I like:

The 90's musically was pretty bad, way too much crap. However, if you looked really,really hard there were some good bands/ artists (The Black Crowes, Wilco, The Posies, Fountains of Wayne , Rembrandts, Gin Blossoms and Mathew Sweet - thank god for them!)

It's your choice whether you want to get this set of course, I'm not the Master Commander of music purchases here.
Everything you do like I actually have heard of.
So nice you're up on EMF and Chumbawamba, too. Looks like I'll be alone on Right Said Fred and Tag Team, and I'd be alone on not liking Michael Penn, and one of the few not to like Des'ree.

I love TMBG's novelty style; "Birdhouse" was one of my fave alternative songs of 1990.
Jesus Jones and Black Crowes do seem to win big approval here, for sure!
Queensryche-a modern classic ballad--can't see this edited, even for the box set.
Matthew Sweet seems to win approval as well.
I figured you'd know Bloody Valentine and Ministry.
Would have preferred to see "Pretend" for L7 myself as well.
It can't be argued though, "Train" was Soul Asylum's biggest crossover hit.
Not really huge on Helmet myself.
Stereo MC's--YES! I love it too.
King Missile was HUGE in college for like one month; HAPPY as HELL this made it!
Duran--commonplace, but I like it sometimes.

Jamiroquai--WOOO HOO!!! If you ever looked at my top 750 albums, you know how I love their music, with all 5 of their albums to date making my list.
Luscious got quite overplayed, even LONG after original release.
Since it was the "single" version, I'd bet a pretty penny "Brian Wilson" will be the "live" version--I actually like it when the audience claps and sing along!
Marcy Playground--again, couldn't see the point.
Goo Goo Dolls-YUCK.
Will probably never recover my sickness of Sixpence.
Shawn Mullin's still quite listenable, but absolutely LOVE Smash Mouth, Chumbawamba, and, yes, LEN!!!!! One of THE best records of the last 10 years!

I think you'll probably get it before I do, while it is definately a good collection, I have most of the songs I like (and i-tunes can take care of the rest).

You're right about "Runaway Train". It was way more popular than "Shove", I just got SO sick of that video with the missing kids.

Surprisingly there is a lack of hair metal, as well. The genre didn't really die off until '92. Certainly Extreme or Ugly Kid Joe could've been included. Maybe the genre is more associated with the 80's, but so is Duran Duran, and they're here!

Also surprised by a lack of Mariah Carey/Celine Dion/Whitney Houston-type singers. Not my style at all, but no denying they sold a TON of records in the 90's and should be represented somewhat.. Same with boy bands and Latin artists. "Gangsta's Paradise" was a huge hit, so was "Macarena". I'm not crazy about either, but we're talking about pop culture, they should've been included!

I think they are most definately aiming this at the alternative crowd, with an over-abundance of bands like Bikini Kill, The Gits, etc... WAY too much obscure stuff here for mainstream appeal..

Sublime was really big at one point, I'm more partial to "Sangria", though..

Urge Overkill comitted suicide with that Neil Diamond cover, but they had some good originals.

With the exception of "Start Choppin'", I hate Dinosaur jr. That singer sounds like Chris Griffin from "Family Guy"!

Not be a 90's kind of guy, I don't think I'll be plunking any money down for this set. But a 60s set, that would be a completely different story.

You Can't Touch This - Got so tired of it in 1990. An occasional listen now isn't so bad.
Nothing Compares 2 U - Not so bad, don't mind hearing this,
Right Here, Right Now - Gets a lot of play on our digital cable party station. Again, not so bad.

I'm Too Sexy - Sick of it.

Under the Bridge - Good song

Whomp - Overplayed at arenas & stadiums in your neighborhood.
