I don't listen to them as much as I used to, but I still love to hear them occasionally. PLEASE, Rhino, Remaster the remaining five original albums!!
"Moving In Stereo/All Mixed Up" ("The Cars", 1978)
The first album had so many radio hits, it almost disqualifies "Stereo" from being on this list. Nevertheless, it still sounds great. It's my favorite Cars song, and since it flows into "All Mixed Up", I lump the two songs together (even though the whole second side of the album is segued, with a micro-second pause between "You're All I've Got Tonight" and "Bye Bye Love"). "Moving In Stereo" is a haunting track that sounds good late at night, and "All Mixed Up" closes the first album nicely. You knew that with a debut album this strong, this was going to be a band to reckon with!
"Strap Me In" ("Door To Door", 1987)
From their final album, one that many consider their worst, is my second favorite Cars song. It's too bad this album didn't do too well, I guess after the blockbuster success that was "Heartbeat City", people expected more (not having Robert John "Mutt" Lange to produce this time around didn't help them, either). I think this was attempted as a single, their final one, but by then they'd broken up and the record didn't chart.
"Nightspots" ("Candy-O" 1979)
A perfect blend of New Wave and Rock, in 1979 this was seen as "The sound of the 80's", but it never sounded quite this sweet again.
"I Refuse" ("Heartbeat City" 1984)
The most overlooked track on their most commercially successful album. I'd take this over "Magic" and "You Might Think" ANY day!
"Think It Over" ("Shake It Up" 1982)
A quirky tune with a catchy riff and hook. The one Cars album I still don't own on CD, I'm waiting for a remaster!
"Down Boys" ("Panorama" 1980)
It's weird how Panorama fits into their catalog as an album with no real hits on it. "Touch And Go" did OK, but nowhere near their previous hits, and nothing else from the album got any airplay. It's their "lost album", with a lot of strange sounds and off-beat songs. It's like "Chicago III" in that it was released at the peak of their success and creativity, but it didn't have a big hit single. "Down Boys", no relation to the Warrant song, is my favorite track on the album (which I haven't played in ages, so maybe I should).....
So there we are, each of their 6 albums represented. What are your favorite Cars album cuts?
