Well, just like the lineup was better than it has been for several years, so was the show.
Is it me, or at the beginning of Price's set, did he play a snippet of Everything She Wants by Wham? The Artist seemed a bit more personable than he has been in the past, all those years with "slave" written on his face and when he would accept awards and not say anything and be sucking on a lollipop. He seemed better than he used to be.
Ok, Prince gets to do a huge medley of his songs that seemed to never end, but Traffic's Dear Mr Fantasy had to be shown while they also showed the band members receiving their awards?? What's up with that? I'm just glad they finally went in and Dave Mason was there.
It's nice that the Dells went in, but I'm not understanding what sets them apart from the Chi-Lites and the Del-Fonics and the Spinners and the O'Jays....
My prediction came true with the Kid inducting Seger. He really isn't so bad, you can see he respects the music. I thought Seger sounded picture perfect on Turn the Page but not at all good on Old Time Rock-n-Roll (and not just because it is THE most annoying, overplayed, overrated, overdone song in history). And, was it me, or was that Don Brewer on the skins?
Springsteen was pretty funny.
Keith Richards, Neptune is calling, bed check is at 10. I've never seen a man twitch so much! He was making me a nervous wreck! Glad ZZ did two classics and not MTV era stuff.
I wish they would have went into more depth with George's qualifications for the Hall. I know what they are, but it would have been good for the voice over to say more. I think Petty could have put a little more "OOMPH" into his speech too. Danni has his father's wonderful subdued sense of humor that I always liked. I really miss George. I understand Prince is a talented musician, but was it necessary to trot him out for George's tribute? He isn't really seen as a guitar god. And he didn't need to walk off stage at the end.
Finally, I was SO glad they went to the old style of the ending jam with MANY artists out there, not just a two man show like they did in recent years.
Your thoughts?

It sounds like it was a great show. And I always wish that I get to see it - but it never happens I would have loved to see George's induction - although I did get to see a brief clip of Olivia and Dhani's speech on CNN. That's cool that Dave Mason showed up

A pretty good show overall - I caught all but the first 10 minutes of it.
I agree that Traffic should have gotten more time, especially since several of the other artists got to perform more than one song. They sounded great, though.
I enjoyed the inductees' speeches and most of the presenters', but I thought Dave Matthews' speech was annoying. He should have focused more on Traffic's accomplishments instead of himself.
I couldn't agree more about Prince and George's tribute. He is a very talented guitarist (I honestly didn't realize he was that good!), but it seemed a little off-putting for him to be figured so prominently in what was supposed to be George's moment.

A few quick thoughts....
I thought Prince's band were one of the tightest bands I've ever seen!
I was waiting, (and hoping), for Alicia Keys to accidentally pull a "Janet".
The split screen use, and editing through the speeches/performances was crappy. They should have shown the induction speech, THEN the performance! It looked as if Bob Seger was giving a speech during his OWN performance!! WHO does the EDITING for VH1, and what cracker-jack college did they go to?
Why didn't they make a short video of ZZ Top's history like they did for the others?
I like The Dells, but it seems like they're scraping the bottom of the barrel for classic R&B artists to induct. Who's next, Willie Tee?
Keith's induction speech was pathetic! THey should have had Mick induct ZZ Top, he seemed more together!
Does Bruce have to be involved in EVERYTHING?
I was surprised that Prince actually participated in the Harrison tribute. I never thought he was a fan.. He usually doesn't talk about or acknowledge other artists (and he once snubbed Brian Wilson!) But, yes, his performance did seem a little self-serving. He should have stayed on stage at the end!
All in all, a good show..#nosmileys#nosmileys#nosmileys

Hmm, I had a little bit of a different reaction to the show. First, annoying though it is, the fact is that VH-1 shows a much edited version of the ceremony. Unfortunately they're only going to show what they think their viewers want to see - hence all the Prince. I was talking to an acquaintance this morning who was at the ceremony 2 weeks ago and he said that all of the artists were pretty much given as much time as they wanted to perform, talk etc. Oh, and Pete, supposedly there was a ZZ Top video montage that they didn't show. The editing was really lame. I wish there was a way that VH-1 Classics or something would play the whole ceremony without cuts - no matter how boring they might think it is. I'm sure many fans would find it fascinating tv. Second, I thought the all-star jam tribute to George was great and I didn't have any problem with Prince being the center of attention. He's a great guitarist and a fellow inductee so it didn't surprise me that there was a lot of focus on him. Finally, I loved the Traffic and Jackson Browne parts. I could watch those over and over. And what was up with Seger's glasses?! They were like my grandpa's. So unstylish. hee hee

I hate to say it, but I sometimes feel like they feel like they HAVE to include soul/R&B artists each year. I mean they shouldn't do that for any style of music within rock. Besides, I think the Spinners, who are similar in style but had way more hits should go in before them! How did the Idiot Formerly Known as Prince snub Bri?

Yes, I agree, I thought the editing was terrible. I wanted to see Traffic and Jackson Brown preform without the speech interuptions.

I saw a few still pictures of ZZ Top from the 70's, but I've never seen performance footage of them from that era. Apparently, according to Brian's autobiography, Prince and Brian were in the studio at the time Brian was recording his 1988 solo album. Brian introduced himself, but Prince wanted nothing to do with him. Brian thinks it's because (Warner Bros. president) Lenny Waronker was so pre-occupied with Brian in the studio, that he wouldn't give any time to Prince.

I have to agree with everyone else's opinion about the awful editing.
By the way, did anyone happen to notice the great Don Brewer (Grand Funk Railroad) drumming away behind Bob Seger?
Sad to say that's probably the closest Mr. Brewer will ever come to getting into the RRHOF.

Watched it all, thought most of the music was great.
1. I liked the Prince medley, although I thought it did go on a little bit longer than it should have. I also thought Prince was a little more gracious in accepting this honor, than he has past awards.
2. I to wish Traffic had been able to play their music unimpeded by acceptance speeches. Along with the Dells, Traffic was one of the least known of the inductees. Would have been nice for a new generation of people to hear their music. Had Dave Matthews did give a pretty lame speech. Only Keith Richards was worse.
3. I think what sets the Dells apart from the other groups is 50 years. It seemed to come up often in the acceptance speech. I think they could have been less complaining about those not in. Did like the music though.
4. Bob Seger sounded very old & tired on Old Time Rock & Roll, and wonderful on Turn the Page.
5. After all these years, Jackson Browne can still belt out a song, and Running On Empty is still one great song. My only question is why was VH1 pushing in new CD so much during the breaks. I think I saw it at least 7 times.
6. Springsteen was funny and Keith Richards should be banned.
7. Loved the tribute to George and the closing jam.
8. Was happy ZZ Top was brief on comments and sounding great with the music.
Was a good show, with no controversies.

It's nice that the Dells went in, but I'm not understanding what sets them apart from the Chi-Lites and the Del-Fonics and the Spinners and the O'Jays.... I think Dodger hit it. The Dells were really a 50s doo wop group that moved into R&B in the 60s and 70s. The other groups you mention are newer. The Dells (I assume) got in for their longevity and for their ability to move with the times.

Is it me, or does Jackson Brown never age? I swear the guy looks the same as he did in 1978.
