OK, I realize that there probably aren't many metal fans here, but did anyone else happen to catch the "100 Most Metal Moments" on VH1 last week. I taped the whole thing, and overall it was pretty good. I learned a lot of things I had never known before (and I LIVED and BREATHED metal as a teenager!)
One story in particular that disturbed me was the black metal band from Norway (I was never into black or death metal, so I'd never heard of them) called Mayhem. Apparently in '91 the singer blew his brains out ala Kurt Cobain, and the guitarist (allegedly) cooked them in a stew and ATE them!! That's disgusting enough, but then in '93 a member of a rival band murdered the guitarist to prove his "evilness". That's WAAAAY too over the top for me... It creeped me out so bad I had a nightmare over it! Anyone ever heard of this story?
I did get a great catch phrase out of the whole thing, though... "This next song is about blood.... and SATAN!!!" I've been saying that over and over all weekend just to irritate people...
Two things wrong with the countdown: 1-Where was Ozzy biting the head off the bat? 2-Where was James Hetfield stepping into the pyro?

I saw bits and pieces of the show. Never did see the number one Metal Moment though. But I'm sure it'll be on again sometime, and I can catch it then.
I did see the story about that band Mayhem. That was almost too twisted to believe! Seems like that should have been #1. LOL!
Another story that got to me was Ozzy going on a drug induced rampage and killing those 17 cats. I had never heard that before. And, I don't know if this made the list or not, but I know at another time he also tried to kill Sharon. Sheesh! She must be an awful forgiving person to put up with all that. I'm not sure I could be as forgiving.
Yeah, what I saw of the show was pretty good. I can't believe the two moments you mentioned weren't on the list though. Wonder how they could have possibly been left out.

I think most of us were metal fans to SOME degree at some point, even if it was hair metal or hard rock/metal (VH, Aerosmith, AC/DC). That story is absolutely disgusting!! Both parts of it!! If that made the list, and the Ozzy story didn't even make it, I am wondering just how disturbed the rest of the stories are! What about Ozzy snorting the ants off the popsicle stick? And Nikki Sixx being declared dead like 3 times? I THINK I remember the Hetfield pyro incident. Didn't they talk about that on their BTM. Didn't they include Hetfield punching that guy in the balls when he tried to take Cliff Burton's blanket after the bus crash?

Both the Ozzy "Ant snorting" episode and Nikki Sixx dying and coming back were included. Surprisingly, there was very little Metallica. I think the only one was Lars going after Napster. There may have been one other Metallica story, I can't remember. I'm not sure, but I think either Motley Crue or Kiss had the most entries on the countdown.

I don't want to spoil it for you, but I'll just give you one clue: About 50 metal artists were involved.. I think that the Norweigan Black Metal movement is too sick and obscure for Mayhem to be #1. It would probably make VH1 look bad (not that they would be concerned about looking bad!) But here's the curious thing: Mayhem were at #69. About 30 positions higher, another death metal band from Norway got run out of Poland for their crazy stage antics. Sick, but no match for murder and cannibalism.. Yeah, the Ozzy story was pretty bad. I never knew about that. It must've been while he was still in Sabbath. It was the first time I'd seen a picture of his first wife Thelma, though. She was prettier than Sharon!

Jeez, couldn't they have come up with something better? LOL! Actually, I had never heard of Mayhem before they mentioned them on the show. VH-1 probably figured not many other people in the states would know them well either. But still--murder, cannibalism...pretty sick stuff. So did the cat incident occur when Ozzy was married to his first wife? I guess I missed that detail. I shoulda paid more attention to the show. LOL!

I totally meant to reply to this a while ago. I Tivo'd the whole list and I loved the special. I have a fondness for Sebastian Bach and Nikki Sixx so it was fun seeing them as commentators.
I was totally surprised at the 2 omissions that you mentioned. And I was pleasantly surprised that they didn't include the sad stories like the Metallica bus crash and the Great White club fire. That would have been in poor taste IMO.
I loved the #1 moment - one of the cheesiest things ever recorded!
