Did anyone catch this special last night 6/22) on CBS? It was so magical. I might actually buy if they put the special out on DVD. Here is the full list: www.afi.com/tvevents/100years/songs.aspxI pretty much agreed with the whole list and the placement. The songs were considered not just for their popularity and sing-along-ability but also their impact on social trends, language, image etc. I probably could've done without "Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead" and I would have expected to see something from Oklahoma.

I didn't even know about it! What was it, all the clips of said songs in the movies? I probably would have included more from Grease. I question the Carly Simon song from Working Girl. I don't see the great impact of that one. I would have liked to see more Elvis, even something like Viva Las Vegas. The rest of the list looks ok.....how about Martina's I Love You from Runaway Bride? Looks like it woulda been a cool special!

I had set it to record a couple of weeks ago when I saw a commercial but then promptly forgot all about it. Yes, the special showed clips of the songs from the movies that they were featured in and in most cases intereviewed the stars that were associated with the song or an entertainer of some sort. (For example Lorna Luft was interviewed for all of the Judy Garland songs etc.) I'm hoping that VH-1 or some channel repeats the special. I would've included more from Grease too (or Grease 2!!! ). I love that "Let The River Run" song so I was excited and pleased to see it in the list.

I was just getting ready to post something about this!
For some strange reason I did not tape this special and I really wish I had. I was thrilled with the list, for the most part. I loved that it included a lot of older songs as well as some more recent things too (although I still don't think Eminem's "Lose Yourself" is that culturally important).
The best part of the list for me, naturally, was the fact that Judy had five appearances on the list. Bette was also on there twice and Babs four times. It was also really cool when they had Bette comment on Judy a couple times. I loved that.

[glow=red,2,300]Although I absolutely love Simon and Garfunkel, I would have switched the place "Mrs. Robinson" has on the list with the place "Everybody's Talkin'" has on it. I could also do without "My Heart Will Go On". Otherwise, it's a good list...I regret missing the show.[/glow]

I had heard that the show was going to be on, but then promptly forgot it. Looking at the list, I can think of little to disagree with (but ofd course I will anyway ;D). Over the Rainbow and As Time Goes By as #1 and #2 are perfect choices. I think that Barbra certainly deserves copious mention, but three songs in the top 16? - Uh -uh. Not THREE of her songs above I Could have Danced All Night. -- and surprised not to see anything from Fiddler. And I'm also surprised that Unchained Melody was not at least partially attributed to the MOVIE IT CAME FROM !! - "Unchained" It had a LOT of impact back in the '50s -- it didn't just come on the scene in 1990. Surprised, but happy, to see "Somewhere" as the top rated song from West Side Story. I would have thought they'd have ranked "Tonight" higher. Surprised, and again happy, to see Come What May from Moulin Rouge on the chart. Great song from a great movie! I noticed a link on that website to the 400 nominated songs as well. Also worth checking out.

I just think that the AFI voters felt that "Mrs. Robinson" has had a greater cultural impact or something. I don't know. I could also have done without the Titanic song but you can't get away from it.

I totally thought the same thing when they talked about "Unchained Melody". But I couldn't remember the original movie. I guess a lot of people couldn't. Anyway, I was just excited to see it on the list at all. Once I looked through the full 400 nominated I was happy to see so many of my choices there but subsequently a little sad that they didn't make the cut.

One final thought.
The song from the movie that many say began the entire rock era Rock Around the Clock from Blackboard Jungle, #50? ? It should be top ten.

I'm NOT a fan of this movie, but I was surprised "Time Warp" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" didn't make the list.
And NOTHING from any of the Beatles' movies? As Chris Berman would say: "WHAT?! WHAAAAAAAAAT?!"
