The show seemed more subdued than usual. There was a couple surprises though.
Some of my thoughts-
Brooks & Dunn were ok as hosts for the first time, but a tad lifeless.
Also during their set, Brooks mike was basically not working and you couldn't hear any of his background singing.
Toby Keith had some sort of nepotism thing going on, bringing his 17 year old daughter onstage to sing Mockingbird with him (it's on his latest Greatest Hits collection). But in all honesty, if I had a chance to sing with one of my daughters, I'd take it too. But the song went on WAY too long! Twice the length of the version by JT & Carly. And it's not that great of a song to begin with! (Kinda annoying)
Keith Urban got a HUGE ovation for Male Vocalist of the Year, which was great, giving us a rest from the Toby's & Chesney's of the world. He was very humble.
Although I just mentioned getting a rest from Chesney, he never actually won a CMA until last night (he's just on TV and in magazines all the time!) and he was quite moved winning the Entertainer of the Year. They started playing the music at the end and he said he waited 12 years and wasn't stopping. Got news for you Chesney, they didn't let Sinatra finish, they're not gonna let you.
Gretchen Wilson, image wise, annoys me big time, but she seemed genuinely moved by her Horizon Award. I thought it was hilarious though, as she and Big & Rich said whoever won, they'd all go up together, and she went up without even looking at them! Then she didn't mention them in her speech! Her leaving them behind is kindof significant her leaving them behind since I think that is how their careers are gonna go.
Sara Evans turned in the SECOND best performance of the night, no question.
But THE best performance of the night was Martina doing her next single, God's Will. I've said before I'm not big on the song, but I love hearing her sing anything.
And then, to cap off the evening, she won Female of the Year! I was so happy since she was up against 4 talented ladies, who pretty much all had strong years.
Any thoughts?
