Dawn kinda covered this in her survey, but I'm looking for maybe a top ten list. Normally I put restrictions, but I have none here. It can be recurring kiddie shows, made for TV movies, one time holiday specials (Jessica & Nick anyone? ), or holiday episodes of your favorite TV shows.
Here are mine, in somewhat order:
1. Charlie Brown-The first TV special from the Peanuts gang, the definitive voices. We get to see their personalities. One of the best scenes is the whole gang dancing on stage, but Snoopy steals the show in 3 scenes:eating the bowl full of bones while reading the paper, imitating various animals ending with a vulture on Lucy's head, and dancing on the piano until he gets embarassed when Lucy and Schroeder give him dirty looks. I always get choked up when the whole gang shouts "Merry Christmas Charlie Brown!"
2. Santa Claus is Coming to Town-My fave Rankin Bass special for the same reason Dawn listed-we learn where all the traditions come from (according to R&B anyway). Great songs too.
3. Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer-Great supporting "cast" here, even though everyone, including Santa, is way harsh to Rudy.
4. A Very Brady Christmas-a movie SO bad, it's good. I never fail to laugh AT this movie. Scenes to watch for-when the men bring home the tree singing Deck the Halls and on the final "LA!!!" Greg holds his arm at the tree like he is presenting it and when Peter proposes to his girlfriend and Greg shakes Marcia's husband's hand for some reason.
5. Wings-Season 7 episode. The show was never the same after Lowell left, but this episode makes up for it. Joe & Helen are having a party, BUT-Joe would rather go skiing, Casey is embarassed at having no date and ends up asking obnoxious Louis Blanchard (played hilariously by Gilbert Gottfried), Antonio is upset no one bought him a gift, Roy is sad is mom would rather be at a hockey game, Lowell's replacement Bud is nervous about attending the party as the new guy, and the best, Brian brings a girl with horrible breath. To me, this is funnier than any plot they came up with on Seinfeld or Friends.
6. A Year Without Santa Claus-Not listed among the classic 3, yet people seem to like it best. Has the classic Heat Miser & Snow Miser. And Mickey Rooney is back as Santa! What more could you ask for?
7. How the Grinch Stole Christmas-Along with Charlie Brown, the best lesson for Christmas.
8. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation-I was skeptical when this came out, but there are so many classic moments. A keeper.
9. Muppet Family Christmas-Not just the prime time Muppets, but also Sesame Street and Fragile Rock characters! For some reason, even the DVD cuts out a section where they watch old home movies. I buy into them being real so much, I used to think, "Wow, look, the Muppets really know the Sesame Street gang!"
10. Honeymooners-Just because it's the Honeymooners, best sitcome ever. 'Nuff said.
How about you?
