We're having "Pledge Week" now (except it's three weeks). Here's some new shows they're doing:
The Clash Live: Revolution Rock
Martina McBride: Live in Concert
James Taylor: One Man Band
Johnny Cash: A Man & His Vision
Newport Jazz festival: 2007
Sarah Brightman: Symphony in Vienna
I'll watch the Clash and Newport Jazz shows for sure. The others: we'll see.

Some good choices of artists! KOCE showed the Osmonds' 50th anniversary reunion concert this past weekend, and I saw a listing for an Everly Brothers reunion from the '80s. I remember last year, they had a cool British Invasion concert with Petula Clark, Peter and Gordon, Peter Noone, etc.
I wish VH-1 Classic or a similar channel would start showing more of these types of shows regularly.

Dawn, are these real showings of the concerts or are they that shameless "during the next 2 hours you'll see 30 minutes of an oldies show and have to listen to 90 minutes of pitches to contribute to PBS and get a DVD of the whole show" things.

LOL! Unfortunately, for that Osmonds concert the PBS folks did devote quite a bit of time - probably at least 1/2 the show - to soliciting pledges and hawking the "appreciation" gifts.

I would like to see quite a few of these. I noticed in my TV listings that one of the PBS stations (I believe it was Detroit) was showing "The Clash" this past Saturday Night . Unfortunately since I'm on satellite, that PBS station isn't part of my package. The two I receive are Seattle and Boston. Either of them will show these programs eventually. I watched the Bob Dylan special Newport Folk Festival '63 - '65 about a week and a half ago.

Ed, I've noticed that whenever pbs shows any of these concerts or documentary specials , they are (for the most part) "edited" versions.

I think almost any time you see a concert on TV it has been edited. It's the annoying pitches for contributions that is a unique feature of PBS that bothers me. Over half the time is spent on the pitches, and even when the concert is on, the contribution phone number is on, taking up half the screen. It's like watching an infomercial.

Yes, they put in pledge breaks, and shorten the concerts. They even use that as a "selling point". "Buy our DVD for $60.00 and get 10 extra songs we won't play for you tonight."
But I watch 'em anyway.
Weirdly, during the pledge breaks, they sometimes play in the background some of the songs they "couldn't put in the show".

I know what you mean about the pledge breaks, you just get into the flow of the program and before you know it the hosts are pleading and begging with you to give money and bombarding you with "gifts" of either a CD or DVD.

I watched the History of the Clash on Saturday, and I did check out the James Taylor concert on Sunday. Both were very good programs. The catch 22 about PBS does concern the fact of editing the programs. While you are seeing roughly 75% of the program, there is that portion you don't get to see. Thus the reason for those breaks to get you to pledge money. Yet some the these products, such as the Clash live CD sampler can only be obtained by becoming a member. My Mom and I are already members, so we don't necessarily need all the extra gifts. PBS has some great stuff you can't see elsewhere, so I don't mind the extended breaks. Plus you get to see the celebrities pitch their products. Hey they do that on QVC!

I've seen a couple of the "Pledge Week" specials so far on PBS. I watched the Osmonds one night last week. Very good, even with all the breaks in between. The Osmonds are a great part of my childhood, so it was fun seeing them all again.
I watched a little bit of the James Taylor "One Man Band", but I already have it on DVD. I just wanted to see if it was the same thing. I guess it was.
Saw a little of The Everly Brothers, and a little bit of the 60's special they showed the other night. I'm anxious to see the Martina McBride concert, but it hasn't been on around here yet. Probably soon, though.
