I have been remiss. I did part 5 almost a month ago, and I KNOW you guys have been waiting anxiously for the next installment of songs that had legitimate airplay back "in the day", but never made it really big (if at all), and are now nearly all forgotten --- except by me --- and maybe -- you?? Every Day I Have To Cry - Steve Alaimo (1963, #46): Steve hit the Hot 100 nearly 10 times, but he never cracked the Top 40. (That may be a record, albeit of dubious distinction). This one got a reasonable amount of airplay for one that peaked at 46. I May Not Live To See Tomorrow - Brian Hyland (1962, #69): Brian had 8 top 40 hits (including a #1 and two #3s) This one, a teenager-in-love's lament, didn't get that high. Summer Wine - Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood (1967 #49): Nancy teamed with her writer and producer for several hits. This Western song is richly orchestrated, and is one of my favorite by the duo. I Wish I Were -Andy Kim (1971, #62): After How'd We Ever Get This Way and Baby I Love You among others, Andy sang this very pretty ballad, that went upbeat (ala Be My Baby) at the very end. Andy was still three years away from his lone #1 song, Rock Me Gently. And Suddenly - The Cherry People (1968, #45): One hit wonders. A light rocker with an almost bubblegummy sound. Mr. Turnkey - Zager and Evans (1969, unranked): This duo is considered to be the kings of the one-hit-wonders. In The Year 2525 went to #1, but Z and E never cracked the Top 100 again. This folk lament about a man confessing his sins in prison deserved more fame than it got. No Chemise Please - Gerry Granahan (1958, #23): Earlier Gerry was the lead singer for Dickey Doo and the Don'ts, but he cashed in here on a late '50s fashion craze, the chemise, or "sack" dress. "I couldn't tell the front from the back".Good 50s style Rock N Roll. Can't You See Me Cry - The New Colony Six (1968, #52) Another good sound for the Chicago group, who had far too many near misses. Greatharmonies here. Ian Whitcomb -This Sporting Life (1965, #100). On one of the lowest tiers of the British Invasion, Ian had a top 10 hit with You Turn Me On. This ballad, released just prior to his bigger hit, literally just snuck into the Hot 100. Jimmy Loves Marianne - Looking Glass (1973, #33): The New Jersey pop group returned to the Top 40 about a year after their #1 smash, Brandy (You're A Fine Girl) with this sing-songy light-pop tune, with good harmonies.

You know, being a Chicago boy, that I know Can't You See Me Cry! Great tune, from a great, if underrated, band!

I've heard of a lot of these, but really only enjoy 2 of them. Every day I have to cry--nice one. But I prefer his 70's disco producing. I may not live to see tomorrow--all right. But still not as good as gooey Sealed with a Kiss. Summer wine--one of the 2 I really like here! A little long for AM radio play back in '66-'67 I imagine, but this is one masterpiece if you ask me. Great duo hardly remembered these days. I wish I were--As much as I like Andy Kim's music, I don't think I've heard this--yet. And suddenly--Not too shabby! I'm considering this for my bubblegum tourney. Mr. Turnkey--never heard it. And 2525 is not a huge fave of mine either. No chemise please--pretty good, maybe a little corny. Can't you see me cry--now I've GOT to look into them further... This sporting life--That's the title, BTW, Not "Ian Whitcomb" Nevertheless, I'm not familiar with it, but I'll bet it's not half as catchy as the Turn On Song! Jimmy loves Marianne--The other great one here. And a shame SOOOO many people (including the Book of Lists) mark them as one-hit wonders. This was even top 40, should have been at least top 20 (but quite dated for the fall of '73), and is super. I'm so glad to see it on Rhino's "Nice Day" Vol. 10.

Summer Wine - This has always been a big fave of mine .We had the 45 in the house when I was a kid.
Jimmy Loves Marianne - First heard this when I bought Volume 10 of Rhino's Super Hits of The 70's

I know two of them, maybe 3.
And Suddenly I put on a compilation tape of obscure 60's 45s I made back in '95. It's still a great cut, and should have gone a LOT higher!!
Jimmy Loves Mary Anne is a great follow-up to Brandy. I absolutely LOVE the intro.
I THINK I know Summer Wine, I'm not sure. I should be picking up a Nancy Sinatra collection soon.

Great to see this back, H2!
The only one of these I recognize is 'Jimmy Loves Marianne'. I actually like this one better than 'Brandy', and as Dave pointed out, it's a shame this group got labeled as a one-hit wonder. I have it on a K-tel compilation album called Dynamic Sound, but I'm hoping to get that Rhino Have a Nice Day Vol. 10 CD one of these days.

I think you'd like I Wish I Were and Can't You See Me Cry. You're right. This Sporting Life is not as catchy as The Turn On Song (sorry about the dislexia, BTW) but its not bad. Has some organ work that's reminiscent of House of the Rising Sun.

I don't think I've EVER bought a 45 to resell. (Of course I'm so obsessive, that I still have my duplicates )

I've seen "one hit wonder" defined as only one song in the Top 100, or only one song in the top 40. This fits neither bill. I guess there is a third definition: "only one song that the listmaker can think of."

Actually know three on this list.
Summer Wine is a great song. Just never realized it didn't chart well
And Suddenly was a fun song, rarely heard.
Jimmy Love Marianne is a forgotten follow-up to Brandy.
With Brian Hyland, I got a tape of his hits so I've probably heard it, just don't know it.
Andy Kim - I kind of liked Andy Kim, but I don't know this song.
Zager & Evans will always have one of my favorite one hit wonder songs.
Heard of New Colony Six & Ian Whitcomb, just don't know the songs.
