RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Johnny Rivers-Along with Linda Ronstadt, probably the most successful cover artist of all time. I think Johnny is overlooked by many. Actually, there are many that DO think he deserves a place in the Hall. The fact that most of his hits are covers is probably what is hurting him. Has anybody seen him in years? I think he may have been on a Letterman Anniversary show as part of the all star jam band. Hmmmm, maybe I should pick up a collection! Faves-Summer Rain (such a quick reference to Sgt Peppers!), Poor Side of Town, Seventh Son.
Marty Robbins-I knew his two biggest from my dad, who had them on the A & B sides of a 45 reissue. But I have learned more from various country specials and TV CD offers. I like him. I have a 2 LP set that my in-laws gave me with a bunch of albums when they moved. I should give it more of a listen. Faves-El Paso, A White Sport Coat, Singin' the Blues.
Smokey Robinson/The Miracles-We didn't do the Miracles separately, so this is for them together, and each artist individually! Certainly a huge influence on music that came after him. Along with Roy & Carl, went into the Hall in the second year. I don't own anything, but that's cuz oldies radio plays them enough. Smokey didn't have any big solo hits until the early 80s. I basically like the stuff with the Miracles. Faves-The Tears of a Clown, Tracks of My Tears, I Second That Emotion.
Rockwell-Here's something we haven't had in awhile-a few hit wonder everyone either forgot or doesn't care about! LOL! Put me in the latter group. Somebody's Watching Me was basically Michael Jackson. The follow up, Obscene Phone Caller was basically a rewrite. Faves-Somebody's Watching Me (if I HAVE to list one).
Tommy Roe-This is a Rali artist I believe! In the sort of Bobby Rydell teen mold, as far as music style. Surprised Dizzy was number 1 for 4 weeks in 69! It's my fave by him, and was a little more hip than his earlier stuff, but not hip by 69 standards! Not bad stuff. Faves-Dizzy, Hooray For Hazel, Sweet Pea.
And you?

Faves - Somebody's Watching Me
Tommy Roe - Fun tunes! - I have Everybody and Dizzy both on 45 bought them back in the 80's while in high school - lots of teasing by friends for buying Dizzy but I didn't care:) LOL . Johnny Rivers : Also known as Johnny Rodriguez. Good early rock and roll throwback whose upbeat recordings I like. His slower tunes aren't quite as good. HOF potential? Sure...but the covers do hurt his credibility. Even still, the man was releasing singles from 1957 until 1984. That's longevity! Haven't seen him in YEARS either. I wonder if he's well... Favorites include: Memphis Rockin' Pnuemonia and Boogie Woogie Flu Secret Agent Man Swaying to the Music Baby I Need Your Loving Tracks of My Tears Marty Robbins : Liked the city of El Paso, Texas so much he recorded TWO hit singles about it. Haven't explored much of this early country and western singer's music but like what I've heard. Took up auto racing in the 70's and made a few NASCAR appearances. Favorites = El Paso, White Sport Coat, El Paso City Smokey Robinson/Miracles : As a group they were outstanding but we all know Smokey WAS the Miracles..the other guys could have been replaced and it wouldn't have mattered IMO. After Smokey went solo in 1970 the Miracles continued to record and even had a a chart topper with "Love Machine". On his own, Smokey continued to display his silky smooth vocals. Fell out of the spotlight for most of the seventies only to return in a big way in the early eighties. Smokey Robinson is a legend and will be remembered by music fans for years to come. Favorites include: (as Smokey Robinson & the Miracles) Tracks of My Tears Shop Around The Tears of a Clown Ooh Baby Baby I Second That Emotion (as The Miracles) Love Machine (as Smokey Robinson) Cruisin' Being With You Rockwell : Got his 14 1/2 minutes of fame in spring of '84. Fortunate in that he was Berry Gordy Jr.'s son in law or something like that...so he had the connections to get backing vocals from Michael Jackson while The Gloved One was the hottest commodity in the recording industry. Okay, I liked the first single. "Obscene Phone Caller" was horrendous though. Didn't really sing, just shouted over the backbeat. Not even talented enough to be a rapper. You are the weakest link, goodbye! Favorites = Somebody's Watching Me Tommy Roe : As Dave would say, "make it STOP!" Not a fan.

Johnny Rivers-Not an artist I think much of.. Yes, he did a lot of covers, but wouldn't you rather hear Chuck Berry do "Maybeline"? Three Dog Night did a lot of covers, and I'd MUCH rather see them in the Hall! His later, mellower songs like "Summer Rain, "Look To Your Soul", and of course "Poor Side Of Town" were MUCH better than any of his early hits. He did a free show in Boston a couple of summers ago. A buddy of mine got his autograph.
Marty Robbins-My dads music. It's OK, I like old country.
Smokey Robinson/Miracles-I like them a lot. I borrowed the box set from a friend and copied the songs I wanted. Filled up 2 CD's. Motown's first superstars! Faves: More Love (the same song Kim Carnes covered), Do It Baby (glad to see this in Dave's 70s battle!), I Don't Blame You At All, I Second That Emotion.
Rockwell-Had his one big hit, and a minor follow-up. Hope he never records again... No, "Somebody's Watching Me" was a good song (with or without MJ), but was he going to make an entire career out of songs about stalkers?
Tommy Roe-I used to have an 8-track called "12 in a Roe: His Greatest Hits". I don't own a CD collection, but I know one exists. When I worked in music retail, I remember one Sunday afternoon this guy came into the store and went straight to the listening station, he cued up "Sweet Pea" and cranked the volume full blast in the headphones. You could hear that organ riff through the ENTIRE STORE!! And he listened to it over and over for an HOUR. Then he left, and came back later, and played the song AGAIN, and AGAIN, and AGAIN..... And everywhere in the store people just heard that organ riff coming out of the guys headphones over and over and over.....

Johnny Rivers: Ever since I can remember, he has always been one of my favorite singers!! He is also another singer whom I remember seeing on “Where The Action Is”: They seemed to always have him on the beach, seated—guitar in hand—next to a fire ring (Complete with fire even sometimes!) He would be in the midst of a circle of people gathered around said fire ring, and everyone would be clapping along while he played. Amongst the crowd would be 2 or 3 young women who would join in at appropriate times, thus leading me to conclude that they were his background singers. (Either that, or the ones on camera were merely lip-syncing someone elses voices—this could EASILY have been the case) I remember him singing “Memphis” and “Poor Side of Town”, oh! and “High on the Mountain of Love” on that show. Also, 7th Son. (Actually, he was on that show quite a bit, come to think of it! EVERY Friday it seems--at least practically--in the summer of ’65) Also, I know that he recorded “Memphis”, as well as other songs—and did quite a bit of performing at-- The Whisky a-Go-Go in Hollywood. Guess what? The place is still around, and my nephew and his band performed there a few years ago. Anyway, my fave songs by him are the ones named above, plus Baby I Need Your Lovin, Midnight Special, Muddy Water, Secret Agent Man, Tracks of My Tears, etc (Rockin’ Pneumonia is an ok song, but it’s not one of my favorites.) I also like his versions of Help Me Rhonda, and Where Have All The Flowers Gone? Oh! And btw, he does have a performance archived on one of my Hullabaloo DVDs, but (*Turns red*) I can’t recall which song it is at the moment. Marty Robins: VERY talented!! He always seemed friendly and always seemed to me to be “just on the edge of” both country and rock. Favorite songs by him: El Paso (LOVE the guitar!!), White Sport Coat, Big Iron, and “Streets of Laredo”---and “My Woman, My woman, My Wife” (It seems that he also recorded versions of “Do Not Forsake Me” and “Ghostriders in the Sky”; if so, list them as faves too. LOL!) Smoky Robinson: Smoky: Singer, songwriter extraordinaire AND co-founder of Motown: WOWZY DOWZY!!! and… The Miracles!!! Now the song THIS group performs on my Hullabaloo DVD I know!!! (This is because I am currently ADDICTED to it!!) It’s “Goin’ to a Go-Go”. What a GREAT get-up-and dance number it is!!! Well, I may not be able to “Get up and…”, but I STILL DANCE to it!! (Can’t help it!) Anyway, my favorite songs by this fave group of mine are: “Go-Go”, “Shop Around”, “I Second That Emotion”, “You Really Got a Hold on Me”, “Mickey’s Monkey” “Tracks of My Tears” (Whoo hoo! There it is again!), “More Love”, “Baby, Baby Don’t Cry” and Tears of a Clown” (Hmm.. I NEED to get a GH collection!) TOMMY ROE: >>This is a Rali artist I believe! << You would think so, wouldn’t you? Anyway, thanks much for the PR! ;D Another artist who, (Along with Johnny Rivers, come to think of it) NEEDS to appear on a future PBS special (Assuming he’s still living and all) He was one of—if not my VERY favorite singer(s) when I was younger. I used to always dream that he was singing “Oh, Sweet Pea” to me. (ROFL!) I remember seeing him quite a bit on shows such as Bandstand and Shindig when I was little (Not on “Where The Action Is”, however. LOL). I remember that he was VERY popular; then after “Dizzy” he simply seemed to disappear!! Well, I just did a search because I’d figured there were some songs I wasn’t remembering, and guess what?? He IS alive and well and STILL touring!! In fact, you can go to his official website…TommyRoe.com and hear some recent recordings. I just listened to his version of “If I were A Carpenter”: It was actually pretty good! My favorite song by him is probably “Sheila". Oddly enough, I’m still kind of sick of Dizzy—they played it SO MUCH back then! (LOL!). And, yes, I still like to sing along to “Sweet Pea” (Or, rather I WOULD—if I would ever hear it again!! But I'm no longer dreaming about it, though. LOL!) Incidentally, I once heard Dick Clark list Tommy Roe as one of a few singers who owed his career, at least in part, to the fact he sounded similar to Buddy Holly. “Sheila” makes a great argument for his case…

Johnny Rivers--fine, distinct singer who still tours county and state fairs. Made great music for 13 years, wouldn't change a thing about his songs, covers included! Have a 2-cassette anthology from Rhino. Just beating Tommy Roe as my fave today. Faves: Rockin' pneumonia, boogie woogie flu (WOO HOOOO!) Swayin' to the music (LOVED this since Day 1 way back when, it never quits with me) Secret agent man Poor side of town (LOVE it--FULL ending, please) Memphis Seventh son Mountain of love Summer rain Maybelline Midnight special (years before CCR, but a guy named Paul Evans had the hit with it first) Help me Rhonda Muddy water (Washed my hands in) Baby I need your lovin' Muddy river Where have all the flowers gone By the time I get to Phoenix Curious mind (The "Um" song) Tracks of my tears (One of my least fave 60's top 10 hits by a pop/rock artist; The Miracles and Linda Ronstadt did it considerably better) Look to your soul Sea cruise Into the mystic Cupid Fire and rain Think his name Marty Robbins--seems like everyone's dad liked him! "White Sport Coat" was one of my Dad's faves in his college years. But I can't stand El Paso--BO-O-O-ORING!!! But I do like him better than Charlie Rich anyway. Faves: Devil woman (Great tune!) A white sport coat (and a pink carnation) (Hmmmm...The USA filled with 90 million Pink '57 Chevys? ;D ;D ) Don't worry (Billboard erroneously subtitled it "Like all the other times") Ruby Ann Ballad of the Alamo Big iron Smokey Robinson/Miracles--Seems like many non-musical novices (like my mom) ask "Who are the Miracles?" I'd say the group that did "Tracks of my tears" and "Tears of a clown", and the reaction is often, "Oh yeah, that's Smokey Robinson!" Well, Smokey was such a genius that the group was much left behind in name. Uncomparable vocalist, there's not a tune of theirs or his (unlike many other Motown acts) I dislike. Not my fave today, but have the most respect for. Faves: (Miracles, with or wothout Smokey) I second that emotion (One of the few "Big Chill" tunes I never have gotten sick of) Love machine Tears of a clown Shop around More love (LOVE both their version and Kim Carnes' version) Do it baby Going to a go-go Mickey's monkey (All right now, is everybody ready!!!??) Ooo baby baby The tracks of my tears I don't blame you at all Baby baby don't cry Point it out You've really got a hold on me If you can want Come 'round here, I'm the one you need Doggone right Special occasion I'll try something new The love I saw in you was just a mirage And others... Solo: (almost forgot) Cruisin' (YES! Eat your heart out, Huey & Gwyneth) Being with you Tell me tomorrow (VERY underrated) Just to see her One heartbeat Quiet storm Let me be the clock Old fashioned love Baby that's backatcha The agony and the ecstasy I've made love to you 1000 times Baby come close Open Blame it on love And others... Rockwell--Dislike him all you want, but as far as I know, "Somebody's watching me" has never been out on ANY CD!!!! (Compilations, I can understand due to the usual difficulty with licensing any product with Michael Jackson post-1975 on it, but not even the original album's been out on CD? I DO care!!! I absolutely LOVED that song in '84, as did my middle brother (he had the whole album in fact) Thankfully, I taped it from a college roommate back in '89, and listen to the song sparingly. And LOVE most of the paranoid lyrics in the song--story of my life... ;D And "Phone Caller"'s all right too. Tommy Roe--LOVE listening to his MCA compilation on CD (Sorry, Boogie--and he's an Atlanta man!). Nothing highly special about the guy, he just had so many great bubble-gummish tunes! Faves: Dizzy (eternal top 500) Sheila Sweet pea (If I could, I would crank it in my headphones for an hour!!! ;D) Jam up jelly tight Everybody Hooray for Hazel Jack and Jill Heather honey (above 2; VERY overlooked) Stir it up and serve it (rehash of "Jam up") Stagger Lee Come on (rehash of "Everybody") We can make music Pearl (cooool organ) Susie darlin' Carol The folk singer It's now winter's day (How this hit top 40 and not many of the above is beyond me) Party girl Sing along with me Dottie I like it

Dave, I have the song on a CD compilation called "Only Soul 1980-1984" (out of that series "Only Rock 'n Roll", "Only Love", "Only Dance" etc...) It may still be in print, I got it at Circuit City back in '98.

Johnny Rivers - I've always enjoyed most of his songs, but agree that all the cover versions probably have had something of a negative impact on his image, and possibly chances for the Hall. Still, he makes each song his own. Favorites: Summer Rain, Baby I Need Your Lovin', Seventh Son, Poor Side of Town, Swayin' to the Music.
Marty Robbins - My dad likes him too! I wasn't as fond of his music when I was younger, but it's grown on me a lot in recent years. Good singer, with a very distinctive voice. Favorites: El Paso, A White Sport Coat, Devil Woman.
Smokey Robinson/The Miracles - Smokey is a tremendous talent, and although I really enjoy his solo work, I think he was at his best with the Miracles. Just about everything I've heard of his is excellent. Favorites: Ooh Baby Baby, More Love, If You Can Want, Special Occasion, Baby Baby Don't Cry, Tears of a Clown, Do It Baby and Love Machine (Miracles), Cruisin', Being With You, and Quiet Storm (Smokey solo).
Rockwell - I loved 'Somebody's Watching Me' back in the day, but that's about it.
Tommy Roe - Great 60's pop that's always enjoyable to listen to. I'd like to get his greatest hits compilation someday. Favorites: Jam Up Jelly Tight, Dizzy, Sweet Pea, Hooray for Hazel.

Rockwell - no thanks.
Tommy Roe - love Dizzy. Sweet Pea is ok.
