Ok, as you will be able to tell from my responses the other day, I am all jacked about doing the INSANE list again! But it's gonna take lots of work!!
OMD-Railyn requested this one. I only really know If You Leave, which came out just in time for 8th grade graduation, so that was cool. Good song, but I think otherwise they'd be too lite for me. Fave-If You Leave.
Supremes-Whether you like them or not, they are the number one female act of all time. We all know about Diana's ego at this point. Actually, I know none of the post Diana stuff, but I guess there are some good ones. Most of the typical oldies songs are trite at this point to me. Had one song hit number 11 on the charts, interrupting what would have been 15 top ten hits. That's saying something. I like the later stuff, including their more "social" songs. Faves-Love Child, Reflections, The Happening.
Surfaris-Suggestion from Dave. Sorry, all I know is Wipe Out and am a bit sick of it at this point. Fave-Wipe Out.
Survivor-Wow, looking at the old Whitburn guide, they had quite a few Hot 100 hits, although the later ones didn't do too well. I have a greatest hits disc that covers the biggies pretty well. Not a disc I ever really put on (I think I bought it because they were coming to our fest in town), but glad I have it. Faves-I Can't Hold Back (have the 45 too), High on You, The Moment of Truth.
Billy Swan-Suggestion from Dave, although he said "maybe not" afterwards. Anyway, I have heard I Can Help described as an Elvis sound alike (The King covered it), but to me, it always sounded like Ringo. Definitely sounds like a song he'd do! That's the only song I know, and I like it a lot. Have it on a reissue single. Fave-I Can Help.
And you?

OMD - Whenever you said OMD the other day, I had no clue who you were talking about. But now I do. I know If You Leave also, but that's the only one. Love that song. Fave - If You Leave.
Supremes - I never heard any of the post-Diana stuff either, so I can't comment there. BUT - the Supremes are one of my favorite musical groups of all-time. They're my second favorite trio, right behind the Dixie Chicks. Wonderful harmonies and coordinated costumes are what keep them at legendary status! Faves - Where Did Our Love Go, Baby Love, Can't Hurry Love, Reflections.
Surfaris - My opinion is pretty much the same as yours.
Survivor - Never really paid much attention to them.
Billy Swan - Never heard of him.

OMD - A buddy of mine had one of the albums in high school (it included the song Secrets , can't remember the album title). I remember hearing Tesla Girls alot at the time - got tired of it very quickly because both the video and the song recieved a lot of play. Faves - If You Leave Supremes - I really like and enjoy listening to many of their songs. The first song I remember hearing when I was little was Love Child. I have quite a few tunes on 45 and cassette. It seemed that as far back as the late 60's Diana's ego was beginning to grow, starting with the name change to Diana Ross and ... Faves - Back in My Arms Again , Love Child , The Happening, Stoned Love , Come See About Me , Baby Love , Love is Here and Now You're Gone , Reflections, Stop! in The Name of Love and Someday We'll Be Together. Surfaris - I only know a couple of tunes , but I like 'em. Faves - Surfer Joe and Wipeout Survivor - They had quite a few good songs . I bought the 45 of High on You (love that tune!). I remember American Heartbeat recieving quite a bit of airplay locally at the time. Faves - High on You , Eye of The Tiger, American Heartbeat and The Search is Over. Billy Swan -You're not alone Adam My cousin was over visiting one evening and he asked me about I Can Help (but at that point he couldn't remember the title or the artist) . One of the clues he gave me was the artist sounded like Ringo and that it was from around 1974! He was shocked when I came back with the tape and played it for him - all he could say was that's it! that's the song ! LOL Faves - I Can Help

OMD: Or as my high school best friend's sister insisted on calling them even after they shortened their name - Orchestral Manuevoures In the Dark. She was the only Goth in our entire school and this band was quite popular with them. Liked their more mainstream material like the big hit from "Pretty in Pink". I lived on a steady diet of John Hughes films in the mid-80's so I can appreciate this group. Very British..sorta like the Pet Shop Boys in appearance. Favorites = If You Leave, So In Love
Supremes: I'm rather burned out on them. Our oldies station seems to play one of their songs during every set. Not familiar with their post-Diana recordings. I suppose the modern day equivalent would be Destiny's Child and Beyonce' Knowles who has taken on that "MISS Ross to you" attitude. Anyway, the music is good and I can understand why they are so highly praised by critics. I'm just tired of them, frankly. Favorites = Baby Love, Reflections, You Keep Me Hanging On, Someday We'll Be Together,
Surfaris: Well, Wipe Out was a great song the first 6,942 times I heard it...still like it but it needs some rest. Favorites = Wipe Out
Survivor: Pretty good band that doesn't deserve their "cheesy" reputation that they have today. Would they have had as many hits if not included in the Rocky III soundtrack? Of course not. They should be eternally grateful to whomever recommended "Eye of the Tiger" for the theme song. Favorites = Poor Man's Son, Eye of the Tiger, High On You, Is This Love
Billy Swan: I know nothing about this guy other than the fact that he was attacked by a dog that had gotten into the studio during the recording of "I Can Help". The whistling and clapping you hear at the end is not applause and appreciation for a nice performance, but rather one of the sound engineers calling for the dog to let go of Billy's pants leg. True story, honest to God, per Casey Kasem. Favorites = I Can Help

Looks good... OMD--But Casey Kasem ALWAYS called them by their full name, "Orchestral Manouevres in the Dark". I don't think they had been on the opinion post before as far as I recall. Great stuff all throughout the 80's. Just couldn't see what the big deal was behind "Pretty in Pink" and other John Hughes films; "So in love" is an OUTSTANDING, PERFECT tune that I LOVED from Day 1. Faves: So in love Dreaming If you leave (A shame most people only remember this) Joan of Arc Forever live and die Pandora's box Enola Gay Talking loud and clear Stand above me Sailing on the seven seas Locomotion Electricity Souvenir We love you The Pacific age Tesla girls Secret Messages Dazzle ships Supremes--My fave today, even if they're overplayed on the oldies stations. Some songs, that is. Still, a great trio who went through quite a few line-up changes, making great music all throughout. Faves: (Big list! ;D) THE HAPPENING (WOO HOO!!! SUPER production) Love child (LOVED this since age 5) I'm gonna make you love me (Not a great vocal by Eddie, but possibly Diana's best vocal performance EVER) My world is empty without you (This, not "Love is here", should've been one of their 12 #1's) You keep me hangin' on Back in my arms again You can't hurry love I hear a symphony Where did our love go (Bang those fancy shoes!) Nathan Jones (Their best post-Diana tune; LOVE the phaser effect) Baby love Come see about me Stoned love (MUST have the full intro) Love is like an itching in my heart When the love light starts shining through his eyes (sounds MUCH like Martha/Vandellas' Heat Wave) Up the ladder to the roof Stop in the name of love (overplayed) I'm gonna let my heart do the walking (great disco!) In and out of love Someday we'll be together River deep mountain high (with the 4 Tops) Floy Joy Reflections (Maybe their most overplayed) I'm livin' in shame Nothing but heartaches Love is here and now you're gone (#1 only because of their name; nowhere NEAR their best) I'll try something new Buttered popcorn Forever came today A breath taking guy Everybody's got the right to love Automatically sunshine No matter what sign you are The composer Your heart belongs to me You send me The weight Somewhere Without a song Some things you never get used to I guess I'll miss the man You gotta have love in your heart Yesterday T.C.B. Let me go the right way With a song in my heart How do you do it The lady is a tramp Your wonderful, sweet love Touch A hard day's night The young folks Run run run Ask any girl Surfaris--The Beach Boys may have taken the "surf" genre to new heights, but this was the biggest band exclusive to surf music (Chantays, Astronauts, Dick Dale & his Del-Tones, et al). LOVED "Wipe out" since age 7, and I will NEVER get sick of it as long as hell won't freeze over. Every instrument is so perfect, the best drum solo EVER! The song was originally released with an ending that came WAY too soon; the version I have on all compilations is just right, THE ONE. RIP drummer Ron Wilson. Faves: Wipe out (Nothing but NOTHING will make me take this out of my top 200!) Surfer Joe (The trophy was Joe's!) Misirlou (the quintessential surf rock tune) Point panic Tequila Surfaris stomp Wiggle wobble You can't sit down Walk don't run Yep! Wild weekend Green onions Surfing drums Torquay Teen beat Memphis Survivor. A major YUCK. Most of their music to me today is STILL cheesy. I HATED Jimi Jamison's voice WITH A PASSION, earlier singer David Bickler was much better. Their music (naturally) has not aged well AT ALL, and "Vital signs" may be the 80's most overrated album. (With Heart's 1985 release as well). Sorry for any offense. All that said, they did have SOME good tunes. As much as I like synths, that intro to "High on you" ANNOYS me to no end! (Dives for the radio dial) All right... Faves: American heartbeat Eye of the tiger (Critically, this song has taken a BIG dive with me over the years, could NOT see what the point was) Caught in the game Poor man's son Burning heart The search is over Summer nights Somewhere in America The moment of truth Is this love Didn't know it was love Billy Swan--Boogie, NEVER knew that dog story! I have the original vinyl album, and there's a longer ending where it sounds like the people applaud a second, and a third time. Wow, amazing news to me! Anyway, one of my fave country/rockabilly artists ever, I'm sure when he dies, his death will go virtually unnoticed (compared to all those coountry GOLDDIGGERS today). Faves: I can help (ETERNAL top 50) I'm her fool (nice change in sound) Everything's the same (Ain't nothing changed) (Virtually identical to I can help) Shake rattle and roll Don't be cruel Lover please (originally he wrote this for Clyde McPhatter) Queen of my heart Gotta go...homemade tacos are calling!

OMD - Great 80's group! I somehow missed hearing a few of their hits when they were current, but I've gotten to know them in recent years and have been really impressed. Favorites: If You Leave, So In Love, Dreaming, Forever Live and Die.
Supremes - Very talented group, both with and without Diana. Some of their songs are quite overplayed, admittedly, but they're still enjoyable to listen to. Favorites: Baby Love, You Can't Hurry Love, You Keep Me Hangin' On, The Happening, My World is Empty Without You, Up the Ladder to the Roof, Nathan Jones, I'm Gonna Let My Heart Do the Walking.
Surfaris - I only know 'Wipe Out' - what a classic tune! I used to speed-skate to it at the roller rink when I was younger.
Survivor - My feelings about them are similar to Boogie's. I've always liked their music, and have their Greatest Hits on cassette. Favorites: American Heartbeat, Eye of the Tiger, Burning Heart, I Can't Hold Back.
Billy Swan - I only know 'I Can Help' - great childhood favorite of mine. I agree, he does sound very much like Ringo on that one!

Thanks for putting OMD in today! Anyone who only knows one or two songs is really missing out! I've included links to my 2 favorites (and let the music speak for itself): Forever Live And Die: www.jpc.de/cgi-bin/ram.cgi/029/652/ZLXAEYGOPRWCBOZPRXYWKOBHZXYL.rmand Secret: www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/clipserve/B000002GE4001002/1/103-0396460-1262209They have that lush sound I just love. Other favorites: So In Love, Enola Gay, Dreamin', and If You Leave (actually kind of tired of it). Supremes - Diana had a 'tude, but I do like their music. Favorites: Come See About Me, Stop In The Name Of Love, Baby Love, Aint No Mountain High Enough, You Keep Me Hangin' On, Back In My Arms Again, I Hear A Symphony, You Can't Hurry Love, Where Did Our Love Go Surfaris - Only know Wipe Out Survivor - they're ok - The Search Is Over, I Can't Hold Back, and High On You are the only one's I'm not sick of. Billy Swan - really like I Can Help, but never heard anything else.

Sheesh! Not much to say today. OMD--I know If You Leave. Never really cared for that song. Supremes--Diana Ross has an ego? Who knew? ;D Actually, I really do like this group. Don't mind listening to even their overplayed songs. Lotsa childhood memories for me, I guess that's why. Surfaris--I know Wipe Out. I think I know Surfer Joe. That's about it. Survivor--Cheesy or not, I always liked this group, although I don't think I own anything by them. I might have the 45 of Eye of the Tiger hidden away somewhere. Billy Swan--Never liked I Can Help. I always thought the lyrics were kinda dumb. So shoot me. I know nothing else by him.

OMD - Never really paid much attention to them. Favorites: none
Supremes - So many #1s, top 10s, and hits. One of the best ever and the best girl group. To bad Diana had to leave. Favorites: Come See About Me, You Can't Hurry Love, the Happening, Reflections, Someday We'll Be Together, Stoned Love, among others.
Surfaris - Wipeout is one of the better instrumentals
Survivor - Maybe they should make some more Rocky movies, then Survivor could have some more hits. Eye of the Tiger is one of the better songs (and recognizable) from the early 80s. Good group. Other Favorites: American Heartbeat, Burning Heart.
Billy Swan - A one hit wonder, but a good one with I Can Help.

I'm Baaaaaaaaack! I have a lot of catching up to do but at least I didn't miss the start of the "T" section. OMD - Thank you Railyn! I knew there was an artist in the "O"s that we'd missed. I loved this band when I was in junior high and early high school. A few of their songs are quintessentially "80s" to me and are very reminiscent of the times. Faves: If You Leave, Souvenir, So In Love, Joan of Arc, (forever) Live and Die Supremes - Despite Diana Ross' enormous ego, this is hands down the greatest "girl group" from the era. I tend to like their deeper songs. Faves: Reflections, My World Is Empty WIthout You, Love Child, Someday We'll Be Together, I Hear A Symphony, Come See About Me Surfaris - I know "Wipe Out" of course but that surf-rock music has never appealed to me. Survivor - Eye of The Tiger is a total joke nowadays, but I remember when it was so huge you couldn't get away with it. It's fun to see people sing it at karaoke bars. I used to like that song Can't Hold Back but I haven't heard it in years Billy Swan - The name is familiar and I recognize the title "I Can Help" but I can't remember how it goes.
