Johnnie Taylor--surprisingly, almost a 3-way tie for me here today. His passing on May 31, 2000 got VERY little mentiom, and so unfair. Truly just about Stax Records' most prolific and best artist ever (way more singles than Sam & Dave, Eddie Floyd, or even Booker T.). It's time more "average" OLDIES fans get into his music and not just leave it for the aging urban crowd. A wonderful artist. A shame "Disco Lady" seems to be on VERY few CD compilations (I have it on Sony's R & B 2-CD set from late 1999.), let alone one of the 70's most forgotten #1's.
Faves:
Disco lady (eternal top 500)
Who's making love (Some people will go VERY unfair and say he's a one-hit wonder with this--SHOCK!!!
)
I believe in you, you believe in me (cool Stax organ like in "Respect yourself")
Take care of your homework
Jody got your girl and gone (Here's the story of Jody Ryder...)
Love bones
Somebody's gettin' it
Testify
Steal away
We're getting careless with our love
Cheaper to keep her (old-fashioned sounding for 1973)
Love is better in the A.M.
Somebody's sleeping in my bed
I am somebody
I could never be president
Temptations--Perhaps mostly on their legendary status and their tremendous hit output (as well as still being around), I have to say they're my fave today. But their 2 "Big chill" songs get so annoying to me, I've never loved them a lot. It may not be a surprise that among my faves of them are some of their least remembered. But most major Motown acts I like a LOT better (PLEASE forgive me Rali, if you're reading this...
). Then the California Raisins Persona just made me like them even less.
But I can't deny their wonderful legacy, and I even liked their movie.
Faves:
ALL I NEED (Everybody here MUST listen to this!!!)
I'm gonna make you love me (with the Supremes; Eddie sounds terrible on it)
I can't get next to you
The way you do the things you do
Psychedelic shack (I know, a copy of "next to you", but who cares?)
Beauty is only skin deep
Run away child, running wild
Shakey ground (sounds like an early Commodores tune)
It's growing
I'll try something new
You're my everything
Since I lost my baby
Glasshouse (great overlooked disco tune)
Treat her like a lady (vivid memories of this on "The Fall Guy")
Superstar
Girl (why you wanna make me blue)
Let your hair down
Happy people (1974/1975 tune written by Lionel Richie)
Get ready (but Rare Earth's remake is MUCH better)
I know I'm losing you
Papa was a rollin' stone
Ball of confusion
Take a look around
Keep holding on (another fine disco tune)
It's summer
The weight
Please return your love to me
Don't let the Joneses get you down
Standing on the top
Up the creek without a paddle
Hey girl (I like your style)
Power
I'll be in trouble
Unite the world
Masterpiece (retread of "rollin' stone")
Cloud nine
Sail away
The plastic man
TCB
Lady soul
Don't look back
Aiming at your heart
Heavenly
It's you that I need
I wish it would rain
Just my imagination (one of my lesser fave 70's Billboard #1's)
Ain't too proud to beg
I could never love another (the intro ANNOYS me)
My girl (unless I'm in a party mood, MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!)
10cc--the other one in my near-3-way tie. A most unique sound, almost "progressive pop". Even bigger in their UK homeland. People should look well beyond their 2 best known, yet they're 2 of my all-time faves!!!
Faves:
I'm not in love (the chopped-up version's also on Rhino's "Nice Day 14") (Full version; a MASTERPIECE)
The things we do for love (gets better with age!)
People in love
Art for Art's sake
Rubber bullets
Wall Street shuffle
I'm Mandy fly me (parody of a popular US airline ad)
Dreadlock holiday
Life is a minestrone
Donna
Good morning Judge
Marriage bureau rendezvous
Une nuit a Paris
You've got a cold
Silly love
Dean and I
Worst band in the world
Waterfall
Second sitting for the last supper
Honeymoon with B troop
Modern man blues
10,000 Maniacs--rather bland. And only one song I can say I truly LOVE, but a few others are passable. HATE their unplugged album!!! (retch) And SICK of their cover of "More than this".
Faves:
Candy everybody wants (WOOOO HOOOO!!!!!) (Great Stax feel, LOVE the slide guitar in the breaks)
Don't talk (their best from "Tribe")
Trouble me
Few and far between
Like the weather
Eat for two
What's the matter here
These are days
Tesla--Major YUCK. One of the worst hard rock bands. Could not understand it. You're NO 5 Man Electrical Band!!! Cheesy "love songs" (no pun intended) to say the least. Even one song made me DETEST the word "Give" for a time. The only PASSABLE one I like is an early one, "Modern Day cowboy", yet their competing rock radio tune, "Little Suzi" hit the chart. OH PLEASE!!!
Yes, I've not had a good day.
I hope Boogie has a good vacation too, and he hinted on a like soul artist I want to see her Monday.
Please profile another late soul legend(all your best):
Joe Tex.For me anyway, Fridays SUCK.
