The last of August. Can you believe that already?? Who knows where time goes?
Johnnie Taylor-Dave's suggestion. All I know is Who's Making Love. Decent song. Fave-Who's Making Love.
Temptations-Legendary soul group, some may say the best ever. In the Hall, deservedly so. Was able to get past the typical soul love songs of the mid 60's and get into social songs, like Marvin and Stevie did. Those songs get play on the Timeless Rock station here, which is cool. Lost the two lead singers, too soon. I have a tape compilation, may have to upgrade to disc. Faves-I Can't Get Next to You (love how each guy takes a different line), Papa Was a Rollin' Stone, I'm Gonna Make You Love Me (W/Supremes).
10cc-Love their two hits. Should investigate more. Great sound on both of those. Picked up I'm Not in Love on LP on used vinyl. MAN is that single chopped up! You need the full length version. Both songs take me back. Faves-I'm Not in Love, Things We Do For Love.
10,000 Maniacs-Natalie Merchant definitely has an unique voice. Her voice is a little less annoying on my fave tune. Not that it is normally totally annoying. Anyway, wasn't my style, but I loved that one tune! Faves-Like the Weather (love it), Trouble Me, Because the Night (Unplugged).
Tesla-Hair band that I wasn't into at the time. But going back, they had good stuff! Their cover of Signs, from what I remember, wasn't AWFUL (but nowhere NEAR as great as the original!!). Maybe have to pick up their collection. Faves-Love Song, Modern Day Cowboy.
And you?

Johnnie Taylor - Don't know him.
Temptations - Love them! Marvin Gaye is wonderful, although I don't like his solo stuff as much. Faves - My Girl, I Can't Get Next To You, I'm Gonna Make You Love Me (forgot about this one on the Supremes list!), Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me), Ain't Too Proud To Beg, The Way You Do the Things You Do. BTW, Bette covered Just My Imagination on her 2000 CD. ;D
10cc - The name sounds incredibly familiar, but I must not have been too impressed by them because I can't name any titles.
10,000 Maniacs - I like several of Natalie Merchant's solo songs, so I like some of these as well. The only one that comes to mind right now is Because the Night. I know I've heard others though. Fave - Because the Night.
Tesla - Not familiar with them.

I should have worded that better.

Johnnie Taylor- Kind of a second tier R&B/Soul artist. Had a few good songs. His biggest, Disco Lady, was one of the biggest hits of '76. Wasn't my fave. A few I liked a lot better: I Believe in You You Believe In Me, Who's Makin' Love, Cheaper to Keep Her Temptations- It's groups like the Temps that made Johnny Taylor second tier. This group, despite all their ups and downs, members in and out, drinking and drugs... were a SUPER group. Were they the best? Maybe. You could put Smokey up there and maybe the 4 Tops, but that's it. Some of the songs by the David Ruffin version of the group were so beautiful they could bring a tear to your eyes. The Eddie Kendricks songs were mighty fine also. Faves: My Girl (Top 250; I don't care HOW many times they play it), Just My Imagination (Top 250), The Way You Do The Things You Do, Papa Was A Rolling Stone, I Wish It Would Rain, Beauty Is Only Skin Deep, Ain't Too Proud To Beg, All I Need, I Can't Get Next To You, I Know I'm Losing You, Get Ready, It's Summer, Masterpiece. 10cc-I only know their two big hits (I'm Not In Love, The Things We Do for Love (wo-oh) ) Like them both. 10,000 Maniacs- Heard of them and Natalie, but don't know their music. Tesla- The only Tesla I know was the Tesla Coil I used in Grad School to look for leaks in my high vacuum line.

Another summer has come and gone They never last long enough, especially now that we're all grown up and slaving for dollars. Well, I won't be posting next week. Capping off the season by taking a cruise to Grand Cayman and Cozumel with my girlfriend Tricia. Been playing lots of Jimmy Buffet today, predictably. Johnny Taylor: Sad that this talented singer has been forgotten over time. The mention of his name to anyone under thirty would likely draw a blank stare. I categorize him with Joe Tex and Sam and Dave. Mid to late 60's soul singers with similar sounds. Need to check into more of his catalog. Favorites = Who's Making Love, Disco Lady Temptations: Quite possibly my favorite of all the Motown acts. Liked the mix of vocals: falsetto, alto, baritone and bass. Had some cool choreographed dance moves as well. Legendary group....there has been no comparable act in the last 25 years and I doubt there ever will be. In the days of rapping ex-drug dealers having the best selling CD of the year while talented artists like White Stripes, The Vines and Liz Phair struggle to airplay I suppose my cynicism is valid. Two thumbs WAY up for the Temps. Favorites = Papa Was a Rolling Stone, Just My Imagination, My Girl, I Can't Get Next To You, and a very overlooked 1980 single called "Power" 10cc: Nicely styled stuff. "I'm Not in Love" has that dreamy, ethereal sound that makes it memorable. "The Things We Do For Love" was more lite southern rock. Aren't these the guys who went on to record as Godley and Creme in the mid-80's and who had that (at the time) wickedly cool video for "Cry"? Favorites = I'm Not in Love, The Things We Do For Love 10,000 Maniacs: Couldn't ever get into them. Just not my cup of Kool-aid. Favorites = Trouble Me Tesla: Same as above. One of the last hair metal bands to break out before grunge and the disco revival came along to crush them like a wet cigar. Don't like either version of "Signs". Love Song is tolerable but not a favorite.

That's an amazing feat for a British act! LOL! (I had to tease. I remember a few years ago when Slow Ride was on a Southern Rock CD on TV and a guy I worked with said, "Southern Rock? What, South England??" LOL!!) But yes, the two main guys went on to be Godley & Creme. Have a fun vacation, and be sure to play catch up on these posts when you get back! Enjoy reading your intelligent input!

Aren't these the guys who went on to record as Godley and Creme in the mid-80's and who had that (at the time) wickedly cool video for "Cry"? That was one of my all time favorite B&B moments: "Uh, look it's Patrick Swayze, some s l u t - woah - it's your mom!" Then at the end, after the first long and high "CRRRYYYY", they say "Thank God that's over". Then the 2nd one comes and they scream and go "Ahhhh, ok thank God" then when the 3rd one comes, they just scream really loud. Johnnie Taylor - eh. Temptations - love them. Favorites: I Can't Get Next To You, Just My Imagination, Ain't To Proud To Beg, My Girl, The Way You Do The Things You Do, Get Ready, Papa Was A Rolling Stone. 10cc - I like "I'm Not In Love" - reminds me of my ex. Got tired of The Things You Do For Love. 10,000 Maniacs - no thanks. Way annoying voice. Tesla - Got way tired of Signs.

Johnnie Taylor--surprisingly, almost a 3-way tie for me here today. His passing on May 31, 2000 got VERY little mentiom, and so unfair. Truly just about Stax Records' most prolific and best artist ever (way more singles than Sam & Dave, Eddie Floyd, or even Booker T.). It's time more "average" OLDIES fans get into his music and not just leave it for the aging urban crowd. A wonderful artist. A shame "Disco Lady" seems to be on VERY few CD compilations (I have it on Sony's R & B 2-CD set from late 1999.), let alone one of the 70's most forgotten #1's. Faves: Disco lady (eternal top 500) Who's making love (Some people will go VERY unfair and say he's a one-hit wonder with this--SHOCK!!! ) I believe in you, you believe in me (cool Stax organ like in "Respect yourself") Take care of your homework Jody got your girl and gone (Here's the story of Jody Ryder...) Love bones Somebody's gettin' it Testify Steal away We're getting careless with our love Cheaper to keep her (old-fashioned sounding for 1973) Love is better in the A.M. Somebody's sleeping in my bed I am somebody I could never be president Temptations--Perhaps mostly on their legendary status and their tremendous hit output (as well as still being around), I have to say they're my fave today. But their 2 "Big chill" songs get so annoying to me, I've never loved them a lot. It may not be a surprise that among my faves of them are some of their least remembered. But most major Motown acts I like a LOT better (PLEASE forgive me Rali, if you're reading this... ). Then the California Raisins Persona just made me like them even less. But I can't deny their wonderful legacy, and I even liked their movie. Faves: ALL I NEED (Everybody here MUST listen to this!!!) I'm gonna make you love me (with the Supremes; Eddie sounds terrible on it) I can't get next to you The way you do the things you do Psychedelic shack (I know, a copy of "next to you", but who cares?) Beauty is only skin deep Run away child, running wild Shakey ground (sounds like an early Commodores tune) It's growing I'll try something new You're my everything Since I lost my baby Glasshouse (great overlooked disco tune) Treat her like a lady (vivid memories of this on "The Fall Guy") Superstar Girl (why you wanna make me blue) Let your hair down Happy people (1974/1975 tune written by Lionel Richie) Get ready (but Rare Earth's remake is MUCH better) I know I'm losing you Papa was a rollin' stone Ball of confusion Take a look around Keep holding on (another fine disco tune) It's summer The weight Please return your love to me Don't let the Joneses get you down Standing on the top Up the creek without a paddle Hey girl (I like your style) Power I'll be in trouble Unite the world Masterpiece (retread of "rollin' stone") Cloud nine Sail away The plastic man TCB Lady soul Don't look back Aiming at your heart Heavenly It's you that I need I wish it would rain Just my imagination (one of my lesser fave 70's Billboard #1's) Ain't too proud to beg I could never love another (the intro ANNOYS me) My girl (unless I'm in a party mood, MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!) 10cc--the other one in my near-3-way tie. A most unique sound, almost "progressive pop". Even bigger in their UK homeland. People should look well beyond their 2 best known, yet they're 2 of my all-time faves!!! Faves: I'm not in love (the chopped-up version's also on Rhino's "Nice Day 14") (Full version; a MASTERPIECE) The things we do for love (gets better with age!) People in love Art for Art's sake Rubber bullets Wall Street shuffle I'm Mandy fly me (parody of a popular US airline ad) Dreadlock holiday Life is a minestrone Donna Good morning Judge Marriage bureau rendezvous Une nuit a Paris You've got a cold Silly love Dean and I Worst band in the world Waterfall Second sitting for the last supper Honeymoon with B troop Modern man blues 10,000 Maniacs--rather bland. And only one song I can say I truly LOVE, but a few others are passable. HATE their unplugged album!!! (retch) And SICK of their cover of "More than this". Faves: Candy everybody wants (WOOOO HOOOO!!!!!) (Great Stax feel, LOVE the slide guitar in the breaks) Don't talk (their best from "Tribe") Trouble me Few and far between Like the weather Eat for two What's the matter here These are days Tesla--Major YUCK. One of the worst hard rock bands. Could not understand it. You're NO 5 Man Electrical Band!!! Cheesy "love songs" (no pun intended) to say the least. Even one song made me DETEST the word "Give" for a time. The only PASSABLE one I like is an early one, "Modern Day cowboy", yet their competing rock radio tune, "Little Suzi" hit the chart. OH PLEASE!!! Yes, I've not had a good day. I hope Boogie has a good vacation too, and he hinted on a like soul artist I want to see her Monday. Please profile another late soul legend(all your best): Joe Tex.For me anyway, Fridays SUCK.

Johnnie Taylor- I know two songs. Who's Making Love and Disco Lady. I've heard OF others, but haven't heard them..
Temptations-I've always enjoyed the Motown groups, and though I like the Four Tops better, the Tempts did some GREAT records regardless of their ever-changing line-up. Sad that most of them are now gone..
10cc-I like the biggies, but haven't heard much else.
10,000 Maniacs-I really don't like Natalie Merchant.. Like I said in her solo entry, her voice is like a female Eddie Vedder. But I did like "Trouble Me"
Tesla-I like them, can't see why they are so disliked here.. They were more "good ol' rock 'n roll" than "Hair band". They didn't wear makeup or hairspray, and they wore jeans instead of spandex. First two albums were pretty good, "5 Man Accoustic Jam" was refreshing at a time when rock was all screaming guitars and solos. And I liked the singer's voice.

10,000 Maniacs--...HATE their unplugged album!!! (retch) And SICK of their cover of "More than this". I happen to like their unplugged album. But you have a right to your own opinion. I don't think I've ever heard "More Than This" in ANY version (who did it originally, anyway?). The title doesn't ring a bell. But it must have gotten SOME airplay, in order for someone to have gotten sick of it. *lol* So I might recognize it if I heard it. (quoting again) Tesla--...You're NO 5 Man Electrical Band!!! I didn't like the Tesla version of "Signs" at first, but it grew on me after a while. I still like the original version better, but I like Tesla's version a lot now. Some remakes are like that--they take a while to grow on me.

Johnnie Taylor - I know a few of his hits, and they're all well done. Dave is right about him being overlooked these days - I rarely see his songs on any 70's hit compilations, and that's a shame, because they're quite good. Favorites: Disco Lady, Who's Making Love, I Believe in You.
Temptations - Definitely one of Motown's finest acts. Like Boogie, I love the mix of vocal ranges in their songs. Very enjoyable to listen to. Favorites: All I Need (why this doesn't get more airplay is beyond me), Papa Was a Rolling Stone, Just My Imagination, Ain't Too Proud to Beg, Psychedelic Shack, Get Ready, Happy People.
10cc - I love the two hits you mentioned, and both of them bring back a lot of memories for me as well. I also have the 45 of 'People in Love', but it's been a while since I've listed to it. You're right about 'I'm Not in Love' - I can't stand that edited version.
10,000 Maniacs - I like Natalie's solo hits, but never really got into her work with the Maniacs. Favorites: Because the Night.
Tesla - Not really a fan of theirs.

Go to any McDonald's (let alone work there) or a like restaurant to sit down inside, eat at a buffet place, or shop in any store like K-mart. Do this for three to five times every week, and I GUARANTEEE you'll hear one version or the other of "More than this" (I don't remember the words!). The original was by Bryan Ferry & Roxy Music off their 1982 "Avalon" CD. (Not a whole lot better) I can't take much more. Anyone up for a concert???!!! (closest I can come to a "screaming" icon.)

While I like Natalie Merchant's voice, I'm not familiar enough with her work with 10,000 Maniacs (Or solo, actually) to comment. And while the songs by 10 cc used to be some of my favorites, they no longer are. Therefore, that leaves.... THE MIGHTY, MIGHTY TEMPTATIONS...aka.... THE TEMPTIN' TEMPTATIONS! For some strange reason, they seem to have not appeared on Hullabaloo (At least not on the DVDs I own) but I did manage to find a couple of cool things when I was using Kaaza: One is an acapella version of them singing *My Girl* and the other was a performance of them singing it on "Shindig". One really cool thing, imo, is that their piano player added a few extra bonus notes during the interlude of the song. LOVE it!!! I just never get tired of their music! ;D
