This weeks contender is unusual, as it is not only a legendary name, but (::GASP: Hall of Famers! However, I put an interesting twist on it to make it suitable for this feature: "The 70's Supremes"After the highly publicized exit of Diana Ross in 1969, many believed that Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong would sink like a stone. Ironicaly, it was the New Supremes that would score a top-10 hit with their debut single, while Diana's solo debut, "Reach Out And Touch", would barely make the top 20. The addition of new lead singer Jean Terrell moved the group into the 70's with renewed interest and vigor, scoring top 10 hits with "Up The Ladder To The Roof" and the Gospel-flavored "Stoned Love". High-charting follow-ups included "Floy Joy", "Nathan Jones", and "Everybody's Got The Right To Love". A revolving door of members followed, with the only constant being the only original member, Mary Wilson. With these changes came a decline in sales (also believed to be the result of Diana pulling her usual political crap to make sure she was more successful than her former group). The group disbanded for good in 1977. Despite the obstacles they had to endure, they made some excellent records during the 70's, and if they didn't have to measure up to their former glory (as well as a back-stabbing former leader), they may be better remembered today. So a big "BOO" to Diana Ross and a big welcome to "Contender-ville" for the "New Supremes".

The only song that I'm familiar with from the "New Supremes" is Stoned Love which is a fantastic song.
It's unbelievable just how big of an ego Diana Ross has.I heard a story and I may have mentioned it here once before. Apparently before she goes on stage, no one (I guess this means the backstage crew) is to make eye contact with her whatsoever (yikes!)

I'd love to be the one to follow her around backstage GLARING at her... Or be in the front row at her concert chanting "Stoned Love. Stoned Love, Stoned Love...." or "Floyyyyyy Joyyyyyy"...

Good choice, Pete. It seems like the defection of Diana Ross allowed the Supremes to continue to evolve in their R&B roots, while Diana became a "middle of the road" singer.
"Stoned Love" and "Up the ladder" are both great songs. But it seems that the world more or less gave up on the Supremes after Diana left. Wrong choice.
BTW, for you trivia buffs. Jean Terrell is the sister of one time heavyweight boxing champion Ernie Terrell.

It's a shame that their post-Diana work is so overlooked these days, as it is just as good as their '60s heyday, and even better in some cases.
As Ken mentioned Diana does seem to have ego issues. I have Mary Wilson's two autobiographies and another on Diana, and she doesn't come off particularly well in any of them.

I don't have Diana's, but it would be interesting to read. Great choice, Pete! I love both their '60s and '70s stuff, but you rarely hear their '70s stuff on the radio or anywhere else.

Completely under-appreciated that's for sure. I don't know whay "Stoned Love" isn't played more on the radio.
