I don't THINK anyone has done this yet.
You all know what a "Signature Song" is - a song by which the performing artist(s) is identified or at least strongly associated with. We've had many posts - mainly opinion posts, where a particular song in identified as someones "signature song."
But it usually is not that clear cut, and I am sure that for many if not most artists, there can be some debate as to what the signature song is. So I thought we could try this feature. Once or week or so, I'll list an artist and give my opinion as to what I believe their signature song (or songs) is. Hopefully we can open up some interesting debate, as I'm sure that many of us may have differing opinions on this.
So let's start with my favorite band: The Eagles.
I think for these guys, there are two signature songs:
Hotel California and
Desperado
Hotel California is the Eagles single biggest hit and is also the title song of their biggest selling album other than compilations. It is reportedly more or less autobiographical, dealing with the subject that once you get lured into the bright lights of the entertainment world, you can never get out again. In a way, it was prophetic. The song hit #1 in 1977, and a few years later the band split up. But by 1994, there they were back in the spotlight like they had never left. They opened their Hell Freezes Over concert with a stirring accoustic version of Hotel California. It is always a highlight of their concerts, and often done just a little bit differently. In their Farewell I concert, they use a version that begins with a Latin horn section before getting into the familiar opening guitar riff. (Ironically, the guitar riff was written by former Eagles lead guitarist Don Felder, who was "fired" from the band in 2001. Lawsuits and Countersuits have followed.) The song makes a strong argument for being the Eagles signature song.
Desperado. Never released as a single, the title song of the Eagles second album, an old west concept album, was written by Don Henley and Glenn Frey early in their careers. They claim they wrote it in a week together with Tequila Sunrise. On the surface, it's a typical western ballad. It, however, can easily be taken as a warning to the young and the carefree: You can't be alone forever. Someday you have to settle down and accept some responsibility.
Henley's beautiful vocalization of the haunting melody has made this a huge favorite among Eagles fans, and it is apparently used as the concert closer more often than not. In this way, Desperado has also become an Eagles signature song.
So what do you think? What is the Eagles signature song? Hotel California? Desperado? Both? Others? If so, what others?
Opinions, please.
