Let's take a look at the songs that were popular on Independence Day 39 years ago. These were the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart from July 4, 1964.
10. Can’t You See That She’s Mine – Dave Clark Five 9. Bad to Me – Billy J. Kramer 8. Rag Doll – Four Seasons 7. Chapel of Love – Dixie Cups 6. A World Without Love – Peter & Gordon 5. People – Barbra Streisand 4. Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying – Gerry & the Pacemakers 3. Memphis – Johnny Rivers 2. My Boy Lollipop – Millie Small 1. I Get Around – Beach Boys
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Hey Dawn! Happy 4th!!
This is incredible. A mid-'64 chart and not a single Beatles entry in the Top10. (I think we were just a couple weeks away from A Hard Days Night). Plenty of other British Invasion though, and a good chart overall.
Can't You See That She's Mine - Fine song. The DC5 wre continuing their one song a month run, and this was the fourth and last of their up-beat British rock style songs before they mellowed out a bit.
Bad To Me - I liked Billy J., and still listen to this one often. I think he's underrated as a British Invasion member.
Rag Doll - I always thought that the Seasons' three top ten hits in '64 (Dawn, Ronnie, Rag Doll) was their best work. All three were basically the same style.
Chapel Of Love - Never liked it. Why would they record a song about a happy occasion like a wedding, and make it sound like a funeral dirge.
A World Without Love - The top pop duo in between the Everlys and the Righteous Brothers. Probably the best duo to do two-part British Invasion harmonies. Love The Song.
People - This is really a beautiful song. If Barbra would just stop using her status to promote her political views in an incessant manner, we'd all like her music better.
Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying - Another underrrated B.I. group. Gerry Marsden never had the great voice, but the songs they recorded were well suited for him. This is a beautiful song.
Memphis - I already mentioned that I preferred the Lonnie Mack instrumental, but R%ivers did an excellent cover.
My Boy Lollipop - Pleasant little song, not my fave, however.
I Get Around - One of my fave Beach Boys songs. Love the falsetto in this one. Does anyone else think that the little bass riff sounds like the tune to the old Wrigley's Spearmint Gum commercial "Look for the Spear and Get Chewing Enjoyment"

The british invasion still continues it's hold on the charts. Kind of odd in a way to see Barbra in their but then again there was still a wide range of music styles still competing for top 40 play.
10.Just one of the many fantastic tunes from the DC5. This doesn't seem to get as much airplay on my oldies station as say Because , Bits and Pieces or Glad all Over.
9.I've always liked this one especially when I was little.
8.Frankie really belts this one out. I have this on cassette.
7.Cute song.
6.The first P&G song that I heard - great stuff!
5.Not a fan.
4.Such a great tune. Gerry could write some great songs.
3.Just as good (if not better) than the original (imo - but I do love Chuck Berry)
2.I thought she had kind of a weird voice but I do like the tune
1.One of THE great Beach Boy songs off all time.

Way before my time. Mom would have just finished 10th grade, and dad 11th.
10) I know the band, but not this song. 9) Not familiar with this one. 8) Love the Four Seasons! (BTW, were you named for one of their songs?) 7) This is one of those girlie songs that I just can't get into. 6) Love this song. Peter and Gordon are great. 5) Liked the musical. Just don't think it's great top 10 material. 4) Another good song. 3) We went over this one the other day, I think. I know it, but I don't think I know this version. 2) Eh. 1) I like the Beach Boys.

Well, the British Invasion wasn't certainly in full swing at this point! But it was the lighter weight acts. (Although the DC5 were heavier than people give them credit for!)
Good chart, although I could do without Barbara. Otherwise very good, with number 10 being the best, without a doubt.

You're right about 'A Hard Day's Night' - it first shows up in the July 25th top 10, at number 2! 'Can't You See That She's Mine' is one of my favorite DC5 tracks. I always thought they sounded best on the rockers. I completely agree with you about Barbra. I don't always agree with what she does, but she did record some great songs, including 'People'.

That's true about 'Can't You See That She's Mine' where I live also, Ken. I really wish the oldies stations played more of their songs. Another one I rarely hear is 'Try Too Hard' - one of my favorites! I absolutely agree with you about Gerry. His material has really held up well over the years. I have one of his albums on vinyl, and there are some great songs on it!

No, I was named after the daughter of a couple my parents were friends with back in the day. She was a few years older than me. This version of 'Memphis' is the one that probably gets the most airplay on the oldies stations where I live. Here's a link to a clip of it: www.mymusic.com/product.asp?curr=0&myptr=addany&muzenbr=138398. It's not a bad version, but I think I prefer Lonnie Mack's instrumental.

I agree with you that Peter & Gordon are very overlooked these days. They recorded a number of good songs, and 'A World Without Love' is among their best.
