Let's take another trip back to the 60's today. These were the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on July 5, 1969.
10. Too Busy Thinking About My Baby – Marvin Gaye 9. Color Him Father – Winstons 8. In the Year 2525 – Zager & Evans 7. Crystal Blue Persuasion – Tommy James & the Shondells 6. Get Back – Beatles 5. One – Three Dog Night 4. Good Morning Starshine – Oliver 3. Bad Moon Rising – CCR 2. Spinning Wheel – Blood, Sweat & Tears 1. Love Theme from Romeo & Juliet – Henry Mancini
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

I don't know 9 & 1, although my dad has 9.
Hey, Oliver!
The Beatles, 3 Dogs, & CCR tunes I am tired of, but they are classics anyway.
Marvin Gaye-good tune.
Spinning Wheel is another great one.
The absolute winner, and one of my faves of the 60s-Crystal Blue Persuasion.

Pretty good week. I like 7 of 10 here. Don't care for "One", "Spinning Wheel" or "2525". The Romeo & Juliet theme is a good melody, it sounds better fully-orchestrated instead of a piano solo, as it is on the single.
"Color Him Father" oughta be played on the radio more!
"Get Back"! Hope you've seen the "Let it Be" movie to see this live. Someone called the police on the rooftop concert! I can't imagine someone phoning in and saying, "the Beatles are playing outside! Do something about it!" Oh well...

I haven't heard 10 or 9 - at least as far as I know, but there are some fantastic tracks. 8.Thought it was kind of an eerie tune when I was a kid , but i still like it. 7.Love the bongos and acoustic guitar on the intro. 6.Love Ringo's groove , great solo from Billy. This was listened to many times around the house . I agree with MC - can you imagine being the one responsible for stopping a Beatles performance? sheesh 5.Love the vocals on this -oh yeah - The Dogs did such a great job 4.Cool! 3.I can't believe Creedence never had a #1 single - what's up with that? 2.We had the album in the house - so Spinning Wheel was the first BS + T tune I heard . Good Stuff

Some good songs on this list.
10) Love Marvin Gaye. He can do no wrong. 9) Not familiar with this one. 8) Have this 45 - kind of gives me the willies but I guess that's what it's supposed to do. 7) Love Tommy James. This is a little different from his other songs, but good. 6) Classic Beatles. Whoever called the cops should be smacked! 5) Both my parents were big 3DN fans. I like this one. 4) It's ok. I loved the musical. 3) Not a big CCR fan, but this song is ok. 2) My mom is a big BS&T fan, and this is a great song. 1) It's a pretty melody, but I agree it needs to be fully orchestrated.

Here are links to clips of 'Color Him Father' www.mymusic.com/product.asp?curr=0&myptr=addany&muzenbr=178346 (Disc 3) and 'Romeo & Juliet': www.mymusic.com/product.asp?curr=0&myptr=addany&muzenbr=122528. Both are great, if a little depressing. I've cried several times while listening to 'Color Him Father'. I thought that was cool about Oliver - we just talked about him on your Opinion post! I'm with you about 'Crystal Blue Persuasion' - love it!!

I've seen the footage of 'Get Back' on the rooftop, and it's a great performance! Isn't that something about the police being called? You'd think those people would have had better things to do.

I agree, that is strange about Creedence. They had 5 hits reach number 2, but none of them ever quite made it all the way. I remember 'Spinning Wheel' from when I was young also. BS & T had such a great sound!

I agree, 'In the Year 2525' is kind of sinister. What's especially disturbing is that one or two of the scenarios mentioned it in could be very plausible in the not-too-distant future. I really like Three Dog Night's material also. I saw them in concert back in 1991, and they were great!

Hey Dawn!
Good chart from the end of the '60s.
Too Busy Thinking About My Baby - Good, standard fare from Marvin
Color Him Father - Good song, fine harmonies. Seems to have been forgotten.
2525 - Good song. Only top 100 song for them. I actually prefer their uncharted "Mr. Turnkey"
Crystal Blue Persuasion. Tommy moved from bubblegum to psychadelic, and this was the first small step.
Get Back - Good Beatles song with great keyboards from Billy Preston.
One - This was 3DN's first big hit. Launched a fine career. Like this one a lot!
Good Morning Starshine - As I mentioned in Sat's opinion poll the other day, I like Oliver's version better than the original cast version. -- It's happier.
Bad Moon Rising - So many great ones from CCR. This one is right up there.
Spinning Wheel - Love David Clayton Thomas' voice. This one is part of the trilogy (along with You Made Me So Very Happy and When I Die) that made BS&T a short-lived super group.
Love Theme from R&J - Unfortunately the #1 song was my least favorite of the top 10. It basically cashed in on the success of the movie.

'One' is one of my favorite early Three Dog Night tracks. They released some really great songs during their years together. I'm with you about 'Good Morning Starshine'. I saw the movie about 12 years ago, and I remember thinking how much better Oliver's version was. His voice reminds me a little of John Denver's.

Color Him Father - The name of the band is familiar but once again have never heard the tune . Heart tugging lyrics , this should be given more airplay.

I can't understand why oldies stations aren't playing 'Color Him Father' more often. Such a great song, and it even won a Grammy for Best Rhythm & Blues song of 1969. I didn't know it myself until around 1996, when I heard it on an oldies station out of Roanoke, VA. Unfortunately, the stations here never play it.

A great chart from a great year of the 60's.
All are good, but I'm not crazy about the Mancini tune.
The Winstons had a great soul sound, much like the Delfonics who were hot at the time.
Oliver's hit was the best of his three
Bad Moon Rising/Lodi was a 45 I remember playing a lot as a child.
Crystal Blue Persuasion was also great, but it MUST be the version with the horns!
Three Dog Night would go on to do better songs, but this was a good start.
Get Back, a shining moment in the last year of The Beatles existance.
Too Busy Thinking About My Baby-His duets with Tammi are probably better remembered than his solo late-60's hits (other than "Grapevine"), but this one did quite well.
2525-Always liked it, but I can understand why so many people don't.
Spinning Wheel-Great song from a great album!

Spinning Wheel-Great song from a great album! You're right about the Winstons and the Delfonics, Pete - they were very similar in style. I completely agree with you about the horn version of 'Crystal Blue Persuasion'. The horns really add to the song - it just doesn't sound as good without them.
