We're taking a trip back to the Summer of Love today. These were the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on July 8, 1967.
10. The Tracks of My Tears – Johnny Rivers 9. Groovin’ – Rascals 8. Let’s Live for Today – Grass Roots 7. Up Up and Away – 5th Dimension 6. Come on Down to My Boat – Every Mother’s Son 5. Don’t Sleep in the Subway – Petula Clark 4. San Francisco – Scott McKenzie 3. Can’t Take My Eyes Off You – Frankie Valli 2. Little Bit O’Soul – Music Explosion 1. Windy - Association
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Hi Dawn! The summer of '67 was a definite high spot in my life, and I remember the music well and associate it with the good times. Tracks of My Tears - This was okay, but I really like Johnny's originals more than his covers, and in this case the original by Smokey rules. Groovin' - This moved the Rascals up a notch. May be their definitive song. BTW, I wonder how many more generations it will take for this meaning of the word "groove" to disappear. Not many, I bet. Let's Live For Today - Love the Grass Roots. This is sort of a transition song. Their earlier music had a folk-song quality, and their later stuff was more light rock. This is something in between, but also has a bit of R&B in it. There are remarkable similarities between Let's Live For Today and I Count the Tears by the Drifters. Up Up and Away - I really didn't care for the early 5th Dimension sound, and this was overplayed anyway. Come On Down To My Boat - Another group whose picture could be on the cover of the Book of One REAL Hit Wonders. (They actually had a few more top 100 songs, but never went anywhere) Great sound! What ever happened to them? Don't Sleep In the Subway - Following her success with Downtown, Petula kept crankin' out song after song. Too many in too short a period, IMO. This isn't a bad song, but by summer of '67 I was getting tired of her voice. San Francisco - In my all time top 100. This song WAS the summer of '67. Nuff said. Can't Take My Eyes off You - Frankie goes solo. Frankie becomes a lounge singer. Great song. One I never tire of. All time top 250. Little Bit of Soul- Same as I said for Every Mothers Son. Windy - I was REALLY getting tired of The Association by then. BTW, does anyone actually KNOW anyone named Windy?

Funny how this was the height of psychedelia and acid music, and there is lightweight stuff by artists like 5th Dimension, Every Mother's Son, Petula Clark and The Association!
Actually the whole list is very listener friendly, and is an oldie radio dream. I know all 10 songs, and they get heavy rotation on the oldies station here.
Best tune is the Grass Roots, followed by Every Mother's Son and Scott McKenzie.

To put it simply - I love every track:)
10. He did such a good job covering other artists material.
9. A fantastic song - the band never released anything bad , Among my favorite 60's bands.
8. Oh Good one! - I have quite a few singles by them and was sure to include this on a collection I made on CD.
7. I loved this when I was young - still do:). We had a K-tel type of hits collection of their's in the house, I think I might have it in my collection.
6.Great one hit wonder, bought this 45 back in the 80's remember hearing it on the radio at that time as well.
5.Always really loved alot of her tunes especially this one - they play it on the local oldies station just not enough for me! LOL
4.Another 45 bought in the 80's . Just put this on a mix tape of Summer Songs that I made for my brother so he can listen to it while camping this summer.
3. Loved this alot at one point still do it's just been awhile since I heard it.
2.Woo Hoo - Ialso really liked their other tune - Sunshine Games .
1. I really got into the Association when I was in High School (Grade 11) buying the reissue 45's of this , Cherish and finding an original copy of Everything That Touches You.

Tracks of My Tears was better by the Miracles.
Groovin' is my favorite on this list (and my favorite Rascals song)
Let's Live For Today-I heard somewhere that the melody was stolen from a Drifters song, but I don't know for sure. This 45 had a great b-side as well, "Depressed Feeling"
Up, Up and Away-Great sound, laid back and dreamy..
Come On Down To My Boat-OK, but unspectacular.
Don't Sleep In The Subway-All her hits were great, this was one of her best.
San Fransisco-Ick.. Never liked it.
Can't Take My Eyes Off You-I've heard better versions of this (The Lettermen, for example)
Little Bit O' Soul-I have the Music Explosion album, it's great garage rock!
Windy-Used to like it, now I hate it for some reason..

That's a good point about 'Let's Live for Today' being a transitional song. The Grass Roots really had a great sound, very distinctive. I don't think I've ever heard 'I Count the Tears', but I'd like to check it out - you've got me very curious about those similarities! I've always liked 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You' also. It's a little different from his earlier work, but still very good. It reminds me a little of Little Anthony & the Imperials' style. I've known a couple of Wendys, but no Windy. I've always wondered why they chose that name!

You are absolutely right about this list being an oldies radio dream - I hear all of these pretty often on the oldies stations also. I agree, that is kinda strange about the lack of psychedelic music on the chart.

I don't think I've ever heard 'Sunshine Games' - I'll have to see if I can find a clip of it! That's really cool about finding the original 45 of 'Everything That Touches You' - their 45s aren't the easiest to come across. I really like this band as well - saw them in concert twice, and they put on a great show both times.

Linda Ronstadt did a nice job with it also. I like the Lettermen's version of 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You' also. They had a unique way of blending two songs into one.

My dad got drafted that year. He was in college, and decided that if he had to go, he was gonna try and further his education (he was stuyding airframe and aeromechanics and had his pilots license) and enlisted in the Air Force. He and my mom got married in a hurry, and then he was whisked away to Texas. It would be about this time that she moved down to join him. My cousin (the oldest of us 6 grandchildren) was a little less than a year from being born.
10) Love the song, but by Smokey 9) Not a bad song, but not really my style. 8) I saw the Grass Roots once. They were good. 7) Like the 5th Dimension. This one is a bit bubblegummy, but not bad. 6) A rarely heard gem. 5) Not really fond of this one. 4) The hippie anthem. 3) Not a bad song, but a bit loungy. 2) Got a good beat. 1) Eh. A bit spacey for me.

A bit spacey for me. It sounds like that was a year of many changes for your family. Those were definitely uncertain times. I imagine the Grass Roots concert was really enjoyable! I'd like to see them perform one day, if they're ever in my area. I've always liked their music.

Hi Dawn - The summer of '67 & the summer of love. Another great summer chart
Tracks of My Tears - Not my favorite version of this song & not my favorite by Johnny, but a good song.
Groovin' is one of the greatest "summer songs" ever.
Let's Live for Today - My favorite by the Grassroots
Up, Up, & Away - A fun song by a long overlooked group.
Come on Down to My Boat Baby - This is one great song.
Don't Sleep in the Subway Darlin' - A good song, just not one of Petula best.
San Francisco - Can listen to this song over & over. One of the best all-time.
Can't Take My Eyes off of You - Another all-time favorite
Little Bit 'O Soul - Great song.
Windy - Good song, not their best.

I couldn't agree with you more about 'Groovin'. Whenever I hear that song, I always think of lazy, sunny days in August. It's definitely a summer anthem! I also agree about the 5th Dimension being overlooked. They had many hits in the late 60's and early 70's, but except for a few songs, radio seems to have forgotten about them. They really had a great sound!
