Let's go back 16 years today. These were the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart from July 11, 1987.
10. I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For – U2 9. Head to Toe – Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam 8. Something So Strong – Crowded House 7. Funky Town – Pseudo Echo 6. Point of No Return – Expose 5. Don’t Disturb This Groove – System 4. Songbird – Kenny G 3. Shakedown – Bob Seger 2. I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) – Whitney Houston 1. Alone - Heart
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Dawn, I thought you were adding the vomiting icon! I could use it now! This is just BAD. Lisa Lisa, Pseudo Echo, Expose, Whitney, Kenny G. KENNY G? Plus one of Segar's absolute WORST songs. The ONLY thing saving this chart is Alone. I bought the single and got a bonus-the B side was a live version of Barracuda! And no, I don't like the U2 song, never really have.

Hey Dawn! Definitely not my favorite year. Maybe I'm not as totally negative as Sat, but it's pretty close, and I'm probably not as negative because there are a few songs I don't know (or at least can't associate the title with a song that I might actually know). I do like the U2 song. Not my fave, but a good song. Head To Toe - (I think THIS is the vomit icon, at least that's what it's called if you right-click on it; not very discriptive, though. Someone needs to add spew. ) ;D (The only Lisa Lisa song I like is all cried out.) Not familiar with Something So Strong, Point of No Return and Don't Disturb this Groove. Familiar with Funky Town by LIPPS INC. which I really like. I may have heard the Pseudo Echo Version once or twice, but it didn't leave an impression. Songbird - Don't wanna be familiar with it. Shakedown - Agree with Sat here. I Wanna Dance with Somebody - No. Just, no. Alone - Good song. My fave on the chart by default.

You could sure tell that music (top 40) was really starting to slip by this time . For me it would completly nose dive by '89. 10. I'm not a huge U2 fan - I knew a guy in high school that was a BIG fan. I like the odd song - this is one of them. 9.I'm familiar with the name, I never got into them - not my style I guess. 8.Now here's a good one! love Crowded House . Too bad there wasn't more stuff like this at the time . 7.Don't remember their version at all. 6.I guess it's safe to say this isn't a cover of the Kansas song? LOL (oh never mind ;D ) 5. Once again drawing a blank. Sounds to me like it would be a dance tune 4. Who was the one responsible for letting him near a recording studio. That's just wrong. 3. I actually didn't mind this one. Remember hearing it often 2. Blech , Yuck 1.Woo Hoo! Good one ! , bought the album at the time.

10. I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For – U2 Great song from a great album. This is U2 at their creative peak and it shows. But what was up with that video with Bono rolling around on the hoods of cars in Las Vegas? 9. Head to Toe – Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam All over the radio, as was the #1 followup Lost in Emotion. This was their most successful year on the charts. 8. Something So Strong – Crowded House Can't compare to the next single "Don't Dream It's Over", this is middle of the road pop. Not one of my favorites. 7. Funky Town – Pseudo Echo Wow, here is one I had forgotten. Probably because I haven't heard it on radio since the 80's. Not sure if remaking the strictly disco #1 smash from 1980 by Lipps Inc. was such a good idea for a British New Wave/Synth band. 6. Point of No Return – Expose Sounded JUST like "Come Go With Me". Remove the lyrics and the two are nearly identical. That was a major flaw with the Freestyle sound which was hitting it's peak in the late 80's. Good group out of Miami, just not much creativity with mixing the backing tracks. 5. Don’t Disturb This Groove – System Nice mellow floating-down-the-river-on-a-summer-day kind of song. This was in the days when songs with a sexual message were still somewhat subtle. Boy has THAT changed! 4. Songbird – Kenny G Only recording I like of his. This one is actually rather pleasant. Too bad Janette M. isn't here...she would really rip this song apart ;D 3. Shakedown – Bob Seger Formulaic garbage marks the continuing descent of Bob Seger's once respectable career. This track from Beverly Hills Cop II was completely incongruent with his style, yet still managed to give him his first and only #1. 2. I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) – Whitney Houston Very overplayed. Very very very VERY overplayed!!!!!! 1. Alone - Heart Liked 'em better when they rocked but this and "These Dreams" were decent ballads.

The song EXPLODES just before "Til now....."!

Well, for some reason, I can't click on the new smilies. Oh well...the old ones'll work. (See?) Still Haven't Found--Probably my favorite U2 song, which isn't saying much. ;D Head to Toe--Never liked Lisa² and Her Cult Jam. Something So Strong--S'allright. Nothing special. Funky Town--I vaguely remember this, but haven't heard it in eons. Point of No Return--I'd probably know that if I heard it, but it's not ringing any bells at the moment. Don't Disturb This Groove--Now this one I like. Funky and upbeat. Songbird--Kenny G should be the Kenny on South Park, so somebody could kill him every week. ;D ;D Shakedown--Love Bob Seger, but this was not one of his better songs. ...Dance With Somebody--Really tired of it. Alone--Good tune by Heart, off of a good album. My favorite on the list today.

He's in there - the little green guy with the bulging cheeks! I agree that he would come in handy for some of these songs - this definitely isn't a very strong chart. That live version of 'Barracuda' sounds awesome, though. Wonder if it's available on CD?

LOL about the vomit icon and 'Head to Toe'! ;D I thought about adding one of the more graphic ones, with the spew. I don't care for the song at all either, or most Lisa Lisa songs.

Oh, for me too, Ken. 1989 was the last year I even tried to keep up with top 40 at all, and that was pretty iffy at best. Like you, I think Crowded House's songs were pretty good, especially compared to a lot of the music that was popular at that time. 'Don't Dream It's Over' is my favorite. LOL about 'Point of No Return' and Kenny G! 'Don't Disturb This Groove' is kind of a midtempo soul song.

Only one I really like is Crowded House. The U2 song is OK, but a little burnt out on me.. I also got a little tired of hearing 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For' (along with most of the tracks from The Joshua Tree) back in the day.
