We're going back 30 years today. These were the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart from July 14, 1973.
10. Right Place, Wrong Time – Dr. John 9. My Love – Paul McCartney & Wings 8. Smoke on the Water – Deep Purple 7. Playground in My Mind – Clint Holmes 6. Yesterday Once More – Carpenters 5. Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth) – George Harrison 4. Shambala – Three Dog Night 3. Bad, Bad Leroy Brown – Jim Croce 2. Kodachrome – Paul Simon 1. Will It Go Round in Circles – Billy Preston
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Hey Dawn! There was some good music around in the early '70s, including right here on this chart.
Right Place, Wrong Time: I think we discussed this a little while ago. Good song. Dr. John looked like he would be a little longer lasting than he was.
My Love: This may be my favorite Paul and Wings song after Silly Love Songs. It's right up there, anyway. Smoke on the Water: The only complaint I have about Deep Purple is that I wish they did more. Anything I've ever heard by them I've really liked. This is a great song!
Playground in My Mind: cute
Yesterday Once More: This IS my favorite Carpenters song. I'm going to be reanalyzing my top 250 one day real soon, and this has a good shot to make it.
Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth): It's George. Nothing more to say.
Shambala: One of my top 10 fave groups, but not one of their strongest efforts, IMO. It's OK though.
Bad, Bad Leroy Brown: Very good song, but I appreciated Jim more for some of his "deeper" songs, than for his barroom brawls.
Kodachrome: Another one we discussed. IMO, great first line, but not a great song.
Will It Go Round in Circles: Again, already discussed. Fine song.

Great chart Dawn:) Shambala - One of many songs by them that I love so much. I really got into collecting their music while in High School (Grade 11 and 12).Who had time to study when there were so many records to buy LOL:) Every 45 I could find I bought. Smoke On The Water -Huge fan of DP I have never gotten tired of this one. Remember hearing this at the time - The Made in Japan album was played constantly in our rec - room. Bad Bad Leroy Brown - What a voice! I've always been very fond of Jim's music . Such a tragic loss. Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth) That title really says it all doesn't it ? That would be wonderful. Great tune. Kodachrome - You know how much I like this one:) Yesterday Once More - Played this every so often at weddings. My Love - Paul can sure write those ballads Playground in my Mind - I remember singing along to this all the time. Right Place Wrong Time - Like it better now than I did then. Will it Go Round in Circles - Another fave go Billy!

I technically wasn't around yet. Not until October, officially.
10) Good song. Whatever happened to him? (aside from the Blossom theme song) 9) Another classic from Wings 8) Greatly overplayed on all the classic rock stations 7) Not familiar with this one, I don't think.... 6) Not a big Carpenters fan - this isn't one of the ones I like 5) A definate favorite of mine 4) Another good song 3) Not bad, but not among my favorites from him 2) I like it, but it's a bit fluffy 1) I know this one, but not by this artist.

Of the songs on it, I've only heard 'Right Place, Wrong Time', but it might be interesting to check out that CD sometime. 'Yesterday Once More' is wonderful. I think a lot of people here at the Click could really relate to the lyrics. I wish radio stations played it more often. 'Bad Bad Leroy Brown' is an enjoyable song, but like you, I think Jim was at his best with deeper songs such as 'Time in a Bottle'.

Hard to believe that's been 30 years ago!! It's been a favorite of mine ever since. I completely agree about Jim. He was so talented, and so young when he passed away. His death was a great loss. 'Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)' is one of George's finest songs, IMO. Wonderful lyrics!

I had forgotten about the Blossom theme song! I used to love watching that show! I'm not sure what became of him, though. Here's a link to a clip of 'Playground in My Mind': www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000032MY/qid=1058270350/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/102-6590349-0235349. I almost never hear it on the oldies stations where I live, for some reason.

Post by smittykins--70s pop RULES! on Jul 15, 2003 17:54:00 GMT -5
Hi Dawn! Hope it's not too late to add some comments! Right Place, Wrong Time--GREAT song, not played nearly enough on my oldies station(WSEN 92.1--HI DAVE!) My Love--OK, though a bit too repetitive on the "wo-wo-wo-wo's". Smoke On The Water--easily my favorite DP tune. Playground In My Mind--tolerable in VERY SMALL doses. Yesterday Once More--another underplayed favorite, as are most Carpenters tunes except "Close To You" and "We've Only Just Begun"(IMHO, of course!). Give Me Love(Give Me Peace On Earth)--great song, great message. Shambala--One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands. Also like the B-side of the 45, appropriately titled, "Our 'B' Side". Bad Bad Leroy Brown--One of the great "what ifs" of pop music. Anyone remember the cartoon video of this song played on the Sonny and Cher show, with "Leroy looked like a jigsaw puzzle with a couple of pieces gone" depicted literally, then all the pieces fell to the floor? Kodachrome--This was notable at the time for the word "crap". As an almost seven-year-old, I couldn't believe they let that word on the radio(I wasn't even allowed to say it)! Will It Go Around In Circles--Classic 70s soul-pop. When the lines "I've got a story that's got no moral/With the bad guys winnin' once in a while" came around, I'd always think, Yeah, the good guys win FAR too often!

No, it's definitely not too late - glad to have you join in! You are absolutely right about the Carpenters' music being underplayed except for those two songs. They had so many top 10 hits that should be getting more airplay. I love those 70's variety shows, like Sonny & Cher! I can't recall the video of Leroy, but it sounds really interesting! That was pretty strong language on the airwaves for 1973! I remember they censored fairly heavily up until the 80's, so it's a wonder they allowed it!

Not too bad. Don't know Playground, although it might be on one of my Have a Nice Day volumes. Tired of Smoke on the Water at this point. Not big on Simon, but Kodachrome isn't awful, and he says CRAP in the first line! Above average tunes are-Right Place, Wrong Time, Yesterday Once More, Bad, Bad Leroy Brown, Will it Go Round in Circles. The winners here and the Dogs, and of course, George and Paul! Love all three tunes very much!!

'Shambala' is one of my favorite Three Dog Night songs. It's really cool to see Paul and George in the top 10 together. I love those songs too!

Hi Dawn - Great Chart today
Right Place Wrong Time & Smoke on the Water are pure classic rock. My Love is another favorite by Paul
Playground in my Mind - Another good one hit wonder
Yesterday Once More - another great one from Karen & Richard
Give Me Love & Shambala - Not my favorites by George & 3DN, but good songs.
Bad, Bad Leroy Brown & Kodachrome were two great songs in what was a great year from Jim Croce & Paul Simon.

There's a greatest hits compilation of his called Billy Preston - 20th Century Masters that I've seen in the stores. I'd like to get it one of these days.
