Let's go back 15 years today. These were the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on July 23, 1988.
10. Rush Hour - Jane Wiedlin 9. Sign Your Name - Terence Trent D'Arby 8. Mercedes Boy - Pebbles 7. Make Me Lose Control - Eric Carmen 6. Hands to Heaven - Breathe 5. The Flame - Cheap Trick 4. Roll With It - Steve Winwood 3. New Sensation - INXS 2. Pour Some Sugar on Me - Def Leppard 1. Hold on to the Nights - Richard Marx
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

I'm glad we do these later charts so I can be reminded just how BAD music got! LOL! Don't know 10-8, and I don't think I am missing anything! Make Me Lose Control wasn't HORRIBLE, but nothing worth listening to. Actually, I didn't think that Breathe song was all that horrible either. 5 & 4, classic artists, but not their best tunes. The Flame-very similar to Spirit's Nature's Way. INXS & Def Leppard are the two winners here, and that should come as no surprise as they owned this time period. Don't even talk to me about Richard Marx!

10. I think I might have heard this one 9.Terence sure wasn't around long - don't remember this - I seem to remember Terence joining INXS a couple of years ago to do a couple of concerts in Australia. So it's kind of funny to see them both here. 8.The name is familiar but the tune isn't - probably not missing anything special. 7. I didn't mind this - being a huge Raspberries fan it was nice to see him back in charts. 6.Don't know this either 5.Woo Hoo - Always liked this - great stuff! 4.LOVE this! a great track from Stevie 3.Excellent song a buddy of mine was a huge fan - Have it on cassette. 2.Another fine track 1.This was #1 ? "sigh"

Right after HS graduation, and losing my first job! Ahhh, those days. Actually, don't listen to too many of these tunes today, but there's only one tune there I dislike!
10. First of the 2 songs in the top 10 featured in a real cheesy movie called "Licensed to drive". Hardly remember anything about the film, needless to say. But the former Go-Go had a great song here!
9. mellower than his former #1 smash "Wishing well". Despite his often-claimed "flash in the pan" success, Terence had quite a few well-acclaimed albums since, but they just couldn't connect to the public in a big way. Those dredlocks...
8. The other song here from "Licensed to drive". And fittingly, the lead female character was named "Mercedes". Part of the early stable of artists from the great writing/producing team of L.A. Reed & Babyface. Howecer, I always liked her former, more upbeat "Girlfriend" even better.
7. Nice tune about reminiscing. Although good to listen to, his 2 top 5's from '88 just don't compare with his earlier top 40's from the late 70's.
6. After 15 years, I still have the guts to say---mush---. That's all.
5. Ah, my high school class' fave graduation song!!! (Not our theme, surprisingly, that was "Lean on me"). This all-time great rockin' group had to take a ballad for their lone chart topper, but I can't knock it in the LEAST!
4. Another super tune here! Even without those irresistible synthy tunes, this had such a GREAT 60's soulful feel! LOVE the organ at the end!
3. Great to see this particular list, 2 of the top 3 were my 2 favorite bands of the year. "New Sensation" has always ranked near the top for INXS tunes for me.
2. YES! The best one here, and my all-time fave of theirs!!! WOO HOOO! But no "Euro" mix, please! "ROCK ME LIKE A BOMB!"
1. I can tolerate it, better than "Right here waiting", anyway. But his 3 rock-oriented top 3's from 1987-89 are still his best!

10. Rush Hour - Jane Wiedlin I'm very surprised this went Top 10. It got zero airplay in my market and I can't recall ever hearing it ANYWHERE, though the title is familiar. I don't even remember hearing this on AT40 back then. Weird...
9. Sign Your Name - Terence Trent D'Arby Really good song by a very competent singer who unfortunately sabotaged his career by telling everyone who would listen that he was better than Elvis or The Beatles. If you're going to make statements like that you'd better be able to back them up.
8. Mercedes Boy - Pebbles Fluffy dance pop from L.A. Reid's wife. Nothing special.
7. Make Me Lose Control - Eric Carmen In a word...ICK
6. Hands to Heaven - Breathe Love it. Memories of Michelle M., my first true love. (Sigh)
5. The Flame - Cheap Trick These rockers prove they can execute ballads just as well. Good song.
4. Roll With It - Steve Winwood Seriously overplayed. I'm still burned out on it
3. New Sensation - INXS Continuing the succession of good singles from "Kick". These guys were at their peaks in 1988.
2. Pour Some Sugar on Me - Def Leppard Singalong classic. Still gets very heavy bar and nightclub play.
1. Hold on to the Nights - Richard Marx Another singer whom I just can't stomach. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy love songs and ballads when they are well written and well performed, there were just too many SAPPY ones in the eighties. This is a shining example.

Band camp would have been in full swing at this time.....
10) I liked the GoGo's, but this was not a great song. 9) I liked this artist, but I liked Wishing Well better. I remember on MTV's 1/2 hour comedy hour (I still have it somewhere) there was a Terrance Trent B'arbie. 8) I didn't really like anything she did. 7) Eh. 6) This was a good song, but it was overplayed. 5) I love this one. 4) Another good one. 3) I remember everyone being way into INXS when KICK came out. I was into them before that. 2) EW. Everything after Pyromania just kind of stank for me. 1) NO. Just no. He did a concert at Lycoming College and fell off the stage.

Rush Hour--Hmm...this one's not ringing any bells.
Sign Your Name--Really like this tune. Too bad Terrence was so full of himself. He had some talent, but apparantly, not enough. ;D
Mercedes Boy--Oh gawd. Just awful.
Make Me Lose Control--Not a big Eric Carmen fan.
Hands to Heaven--LOVE this. I had the cassette single, and practically wore it out I played it so much. Heard it just the other day on the "Lost 80's Lunch" that a local radio station does every day. Such great memories of this song.
The Flame--Great ballad from the Tricksters.
Roll With It--Heard this song a lot back then. Got really tired of it.
New Sensation--Another overplayed song.
Pour Some Sugar On Me--Like it a lot. I really enjoy Def Leppard.
Hold On to the Nights--Yeah, Richard Marx sang sappy songs. But I guess he's a "guilty pleasure" of mine. I always kinda liked him.

Hey Dawn! Back in the late '80s again, huh? I'm only sure of three songs that I know, and a couple others that I've probably heard, but can't place by title. I'm sure I've heard the Eric Carmen, Steve Winwood and INXS songs, but I can't place them. Maybe Sign Your Name as well. Never heard of Wiedlin, The Pebbles, or Breathe The Flame - Love this song. I think we just talked about Want You to Want Me a couple of posts ago. These two songs are so different in style, it's hard to believe it's the same group. Like em both, but the Flame is my fave (all time top 250) Pour Some Sugar On Me - Good song. One of my faves by them. Hold On To the Nights - May have been better if one of the other Marx Brothers sang this.

And 'Make Me Lose Control' isn't bad, but Eric had better songs. I'm with you on INXS and Def Leppard - those two songs have held up really well over the years, and are rock classics!

I remember hearing a lot about Terence back then, but after a couple of hits, he just seemed to disappear. I could never really get into his music for some reason. INXS had some great songs - I really like both this one and 'Need You Tonight'.

That surprises me about 'Rush Hour' too, Boogie. Most people I know aren't too familiar with it, and as I mentioned to Ken, I've only heard it maybe once or twice at the most. What a thing for Terence to say - he certainly must have thought highly of himself. That was definitely an unwise move for his career. Although 'Roll With It' isn't a bad song, I agree that it's been very overplayed through the years.

I remember hearing some of INXS's earlier material like 'The One Thing' back in the early-to-mid 80's, but it was Kick that really introduced me to their music. He fell off the stage?! How did it happen - did he trip over something?

I remember it was years before I knew the correct title of 'Hands to Heaven' - I had always thought it was 'Tonight'! I can relate about Steve Winwood - his songs like this one and 'Higher Love' were seriously overplayed back then. Def Leppard's music is great! I always want to crank up the radio when I hear their songs on the classic rock stations!
