Today, let's take a look at a chart from the 60's. These were the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on July 24, 1965.
10. You Turn Me On – Ian Whitcomb 9. Mr. Tambourine Man – Byrds 8. Seventh Son – Johnny Rivers 7. What the World Needs Now is Love – Jackie DeShannon 6. Yes, I’m Ready – Barbara Mason 5. Cara, Mia – Jay & the Americans 4. What’s New P*ssycat – Tom Jones 3. I Can’t Help Myself – Four Tops 2. I’m Henry VIII, I Am – Herman’s Hermits 1. (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction – Rolling Stones
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Not familiar with number 10, other than the title. Also, I know Yes, I'm Ready, but I think I am more familiar with the KC and Teri Desario version.
The rest of the list seems to contain "typical" or "signature" hits for artists. Not horrible, but a bit overplayed at this point. I am mostly talking about Mr Tambourine Man, I Can't Help Myself and Satisfaction. Tambourine is probably my fave.
Seventh Son, Cara Mia & Henry VIII are all good tunes.
Maybe we should lift the ban on number 4??
Best tune here is Jackie's!

Hey Dawn! All caught up! (That'll last one day. I hit the road again tomorrow nite) Many memories on this chart. You Turn Me On (The Turn On Song) - Catchy and fun to sing along. Mr. Tambourine Man - A classic. Seventh Son - Decent, but not my fave from Johnny. What The World Needs Now - Fine song. I think Jackie (along with Dusty Springfield) got caught underneath the shadow of Dionne Warwick, who sang in a similar style, and never achieved higher tier fame. Yes I'm Ready - Decent. Prefer this version to KC and Teri. Cara Mia - Jay Black wans't quite Roy Orbison, but he had a good powerful voice. This is a good song. Took a long time for me to understand the line after "Come and here my prayer" It's a simple line: "Cara Mia fair", but I always thought he was singing "Come to the Affair" - made no sense. What's New Whatevercat - Crazy song. Makes very little sense. I like it a lot. Love the sound of breaking glass. I Can't Help Myself - Another great one by one of my fave groups. Henry VIII - Herman's Hermits = Guilty Pleasure. Satisfaction - The song of the Tufts U class of 1965. (Not for any other reason than it was being played constantly during Senior Week) Always brings back happy memories.

A fine collection of songs!
10.A goofy tune - but I don't mind listening to it once in a while . I have it on CD
9. What a classic! - I can play the opening guitar riff too!! - love that 12 string sound!
8.I have a 45 reissue of this (I believe Midnight Special is on the flip)
7.Always love Jackie's voice
6.A fantastic song that I heard for the first time a few years ago . I have it on cassette
5.I remember hearing this in the late 70's - good one!!
4.OK tune but I like It's Not Unusual more
3.I guess this is overplayed sometimes but I still enjoy it
2. A fun song to sing along with! bought the 45 back in the 80's
1.A classic - simple as that!

I didn't hear Barbara's version until years later, when the oldies stations started coming to the area. You make a good point about the signature songs, and while I like them, I agree that they're somewhat overplayed. That's a good idea about #4 - I had forgotten it was on the censored list until it came up thingy on my post preview!

I'd never really thought about it before, but you're right, her style is very similar to Dionne's. It's a shame she didn't achieve more success, because she had a wonderful voice. 'Cara Mia' definitely showcases Jay's voice - I imagine it was a challenge to sustain those notes with that much power! One of his best songs, IMO.

That's really cool that you can play that riff - I've always liked that sound also! 'What's New Pussycat' is catchy, but like you, I think I prefer 'It's Not Unusual'. It took a while for 'I'm Henry VIII, I Am' to grow on me, but it is a fun, lighthearted song, and enjoyable to listen to.

Hi Dawn - Good summer chart, however, a lot of songs by artists that (imo) are not their best efforts.
You Turn Me On, Seventh Son, What the World Needs Now, Yes I'm Ready, Cara Mia, What's New, & Henry VIII are all good songs (some very good) just not the best (or my favorite) by those particular artists.
Mr. Tambourineman - Peaked at #1 on my birthday (Jun 26), now on the way down, one of my favorites by The Byrds.
I Can't Help Myself - A Four Tops favorite
Satisfaction - An all-time classic rock favorite. One of the best songs ever.

I agree with you about many of the songs being solid efforts by those artists, although not their best. 'Satisfaction' is definitely a classic, and one of my favorites from them.

Tryin to catch up. Have a night at home tonight. My uncle leaves for home on Monday . I'll resume my regular posting then. Ok, this is before my time. I know a good bit of them. My dad would have just graduated but my mom had a year to go (they're the same age, but mom's birthday is in December, so had to wait a year. 10) I'm not sure about this one. 9) I love this one. I do prefer this version to Bob's. That doesn't happen often. 8) I don't believe I know this one. 7) I like Burt Bacharach, but this is not one of my favorites. 6) I like this song, but prefer KC's version. He's just so darn cute! (well, was anyway). 5) Eh. I could take or leave it. 4) We had these albums. On the Parrot label. We listened to them alot. 3) Love Motown, and this song. 2) It's ok. Their songs were always a bit fluffy. 1) Classic. I find it amusing that this rock anthem was a mere accident by Keith Richards. Had he not had that tape recorder on in his drunken stupor, we'd probably have never heard this.

I remember I had a big crush on him when I was about 9 or 10. 'Satisfaction' definitely has one of the most well-known riffs in rock history. It's really amazing to think that it was composed by accident!
