This is a song that I really , really liked back in '85 . It peaked on the charts at # 21 . I remember borrowing the cassette from a buddy and including the tune on a mix tape I was making at the time.

Oh yes, Ken - I remember this song well! It brings back so many memories of my senior year of high school. Just about everyone I knew really liked it!

Hey Ken! Yes, I remember that one. More memories of high school. I preferred their other single, "All You Zombies".

These guys were ok. I kind of got tired of them because they were a PA band, and way overplayed.
I told this story over on ML once. I'll tell it again because I hope that somewhere, this girl feels bad about what she did......
A girl who was a year ahead of me in school was way too obsessed with these guys. She was a friend of a friend of mine. He liked them too, but not like her. She'd ditch school to go to concerts, etc. She bought California Raisins figures and named them after each person in the band and would set up concerts.
She wrote the lead singer every day, sometimes several times a day. When she didn't hear back, she began telling him she was suicidal. Their music was the only thing keeping them going. When that didn't work, she began saying that she was on the edge - she was ready to kill herself and was going to do it by such and such time, etc. The guy finally calls her back at home, one night, in a panic. This was verified by 2 people I trusted. Tells her parents about the letters and that he's concerned. Then talks to her. Says he only has a few minutes but life is worth living, etc. She plays up the act even more to keep him on the phone for an hour. Says she's got the pill bottle, etc. I thought her parents would be mad, but they thought it was cool.
So, "D", I hope you can live with yourself, knowing that you duped an innocent person into your game, and that all the kids you bragged to at school about this didn't think much of you for it.

I really liked this song and the followup singles as well. This is one I don't hear much anymore. I'm surprised it didn't chart any higher than #21. It received quite a bit of airplay around here when it was current.
My stepsister went to a Hooters concert in 1987 and had a blast.

You hear about obsessive fans like this from time to time. It is very disturbing. Even more so when it is someone that you actually know (of). I can only help this person got some psychological help. I don't think she did this maliciously...I think she probably had some VERY serious issues and problems in her life at the time. That must have been very unsettling for the lead singer. If this was just a desperate attempt to speak to her idol then I hope she has looked back with regret and remorse at this manipulative behavior and risen above it. Creepy stuff...

Wow Railyn what a story! - the poor lead singer , and her parents were ok with all that went on? whoa!

Geez, Railyn, that girl you knew sounds really immature! I knew someone who considered doing something similar (the guy she liked wasn't famous, but she was going to fake her own death to get his attention). I told her, "I think that's a dumb idea." Thankfully, she wound up not doing it.
As for the Hooters, I got the CD "Nervous Night" not too long ago--it was in a bargain bin for $1.99! (I get a lot of CD's that way.) Great CD--my favorite songs on it are "All You Zombies" and "Don't Take My Car Out Tonight". (What's really cool is that those 2 songs are right next to each other on the CD! I love it when there are 2 or 3 of my favorites right in a row! ;D)

The truly sad thing is that she is probably still bragging about it.

She was one of those "I spit on the popular crowd but desperately want to be in it" kind of people - artsy, and usually had a frown on her face.
