Let's jump back a year from yesterday's chart. These were the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on July 26, 1980.
10. The Rose – Bette Midler 9. Take Your Time (Do It Right) – SOS Band 8. Tired of Toein’ the Line – Rocky Burnette 7. Steal Away – Robbie Dupree 6. Coming Up (Live at Glasgow) – Paul McCartney 5. Shining Star – Manhattans 4. Cupid/I’ve Loved You for a Long Time – Spinners 3. Little Jeannie – Elton John 2. Magic – Olivia Newton-John 1. It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me – Billy Joel
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Ok, don't know numbers 9 & 8.
The Rose is too slow and sad for me. Sorry Lora!
Steal Away-I remember my woman drinking lotsa wine and playing this and Kiss On My List over and over and over and over and over and over and over......
Coming Up-my dad bought himself and I each copies of the 45.
Shining Star-About 9 years ago, I was trying to figure out who did the OTHER Shining Star, and almost thought it was this one! Good, but not as good as the EWF song of the same name!
Little Jeannie I always say is a passable post Kiki song, one I can handle.
It's Still Rock and Roll to me is ok, overplayed though.
The winners here are Cupid and Magic. Magic is the absolute winner. Love it, the best Olivia ever did!

Hi Dawn - Not one of the best charts for 1980. A few songs by artists that were not their best.
The Rose - this is the exception. This is one of Bette Midler's best.
Take Your Time & Tired of Toein' the Line- ?
Steal Away - Lite rock song I didn't like
Coming Up, Little Jeannie, Magic - Good songs by great artists, just don't think their the best.
Shining Star - Pretty good song by the Manhattans, again not their best.
Cupid/I've Loved You For A Long Time - I kinda of liked this song by the Spinners. They've done better, but I liked this one.
It's Still Rock & Roll - A classic from Billy Joel.

I would be starting High School that September - wow! 10. Bette did a fine job on this 9.I thought this was a good one! 8.Wow here's one that doesn't recieve alot of airplay today - But back then ,all over the radio . found a copy of it a few years back - love that 50's feel. 7.A buddy of mine had this on 45 - another one I really liked. 6.That live version just rocks - added this to the ever growing collection at the time. 5.I remember hearing this a few times. 4.They got into that "Medly thing" for awhile This was good. 3.Heard this quite often - I have it on one of his greatest hits compilations - don't know why I never bought the single? hmmm 2.I really liked this as well easily one of her best. 1. Billy! I still here this quite a bit now on the radio - bought the LP back then and now have it on CD.

Here's a link to a clip of 'Take Your Time': www.mymusic.com/product.asp?curr=0&myptr=addany&muzenbr=97384. That was a huge favorite of mine back in the day! I agree about 'Shining Star' - this version is good, but EWF's is better! 'Magic' is excellent! It really showcases Olivia's vocal range so well.

I couldn't find a clip of 'Tired of Toein' the Line', but there's a link to one of 'Take Your Time' in my reply to Sat. Both good songs, yet very seldom heard these days.

I was just about to start junior high - 7th grade - and I remember being pretty nervous about it! LOL! You're right about 'Tired of Toein' the Line', Ken - I remember hearing it a lot back then also! It's a shame it doesn't get more airplay nowadays, though - it really does have a great sound. 'Little Jeannie' is one of the songs that most reminds me of the summer of 1980. Good one from Elton! I remember going to see Xanadu that August! 'Magic' is one of the highlights of a great soundtrack!

Hey Dawn! Once again on catch-up mode. This is not a bad chart at all. The Rose - A little sappy, but tolerable. Take You're Time - Don't like it. Tired of Toein' the Line - Woo hoo!! Great song. Ken mentioned the '50s feel to it. That's only natural. Rocky is the son of '50s rocker Johnny Burnette (You're Sixteen). In fact Rocky's album is entitled "The Son of Rock and Roll" Steal Away - Which is exactly what Robbie did to the Doobie Brothers "What A Fool Believes" - the same song with different words. Coming Up - Paul continues to crank em out. This is a good one. Shining Star - Decent soul song. Cupid - Love the Spinners, but this is not one of their best. Doesn't begin to compete with Sam Cooke's version. Loved you for A Long Time doesn't really add much. Little Jeannie - Adequate Elton. Not his best. Magic - I like this one. It's still R&R - Great song. Very timely and appreciated by us old guys who thought that music was going in too many directions and had too many names.

I agree with you and Ken about 'Tired of Toein' the Line' having that 50's feel to it. It's a great song - I've always wondered why he never had any more hits. I'd heard 'Steal Away' many times, but for some reason, I never really picked up on the similarity to 'What a Fool Believes' until I saw a post about it on YL. Now, it really jumps out - I can't believe I didn't notice it before!

I would have been happy to be out of 2nd grade with the evil Mrs. Harcle-toad (what we used to call her). Some good songs here.
10) Eh. As I've said before, dad was a wedding photographer, and mom used to sing at weddings. Never wanna hear this one ever again. 9) It's ok. Used to hear it a lot at the roller rink. 8) I finally got this one recently. Had it on a K-Smel compilation (either Soundwaves or Rock '80). 7) My pediatrician used to sing this song every time I saw him. He thought I was cute. I do like the song. 6) A good song. I'm not a big fan of live stuff, but this one isn't too bad. 5) This is the song that I danced with my dad to at my wedding. I told the DJ anything but Daddy's Little Girl because that just isn't me. I always liked this song, but it has a cooler memory for me now. 4) Eh. Wasn't a big fan of their medly phase. 3) Not one of my ok Elton songs, and really just don't like it. 2) LOVE this one. Love Olivia! 1) Another good one. We had a camper and we bought a cabin that we put the camper next to at this campground type place. I hated camping, but I loved riding my bike over to the store, and playing pinball. This one always seemed to be on the jukebox.

I'm not sure which one it is - I'm thinking Soundwaves, though. 'Shining Star' - what a wonderful choice for your wedding dance!
