Wow, a Four Seasons and a Frankie solo song in the same top 10! I actually don't know the Seasons song, although I do own it on a compilation.
This was really the changing of the guard. You have pop rock like the Buckinghams, Music Explosion and Stevie Wonder.
Then you have psychedelic rock like the Airplane, Procol Harum and the Doors.
Best tunes here are Mercy, Mercy, Mercy and A Whiter Shade of Pale.

Hey Dawn! Summer of '67 is always a good one to remember. Some great ones here.
C'mon Marriane - Kinda second tier Seasons, but still very good. It was a slight change in style for them, I think. More nightclub than rock.
Up Up and Away - Didn't care for early 5th Dimension - until Aquarius.
White Rabbit - Boy did everyone LOVE this one in '67. The allusion to Alice in Wonderland was a natural for the drug sub-culture.
Mercy Mercy Mercy - Part of a short but successful run for the Buckinghams. They did some very good songs but were not appreciated back in the day.
A Little Bit O' Soul - A memory song for me. I like it mainly for where I was, what I was doing, and who I was with.
A Whiiter Shade of Pale - Love the song, but have never analyzed the words. I should try to read up on it.
Can't Take My Eyes off You - Goes along with my comment earlier about the Seasons' song, being nightclubby. I've always liked this one.
Windy - Not bad, not great.
I Was Meant To Love Her - Stevie was really coming into his own about this time. This is a great song. Yeah, yeah, yeah!
Light My Fire - A classic! Love the album cut; even like the 45 version - not as much, though.

10. C'mon Marianne - Four Seasons (I LOVE the '65-68 era of the Four Seasons, SO many great hits. This was one of the best!) 9. Up Up and Away - 5th Dimension (Great sound, why can't they make records like this today?) 8. White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane (A bit tired of it, but Surrealistic Pillow was one of the years best albums) 7. Mercy, Mercy, Mercy - Buckinghams (Their string of hits lasted a little over one year, but what an impression they made!) 6. Little Bit O' Soul - Music Explosion (Somehow, I thought this was earlier, but I wasn't around then, so I guess I was wrong.. Good tune!) 5. A Whiter Shade of Pale - Procol Harum (EHH, sick of it) 4. Can't Take My Eyes Off You - Frankie Valli (Good, but the Seasons tune is better!) 3. Windy - Association (Only Association hit I don't like. Too overtly "happy" for my tastes) 2. I Was Made to Love Her - Stevie Wonder (Best song on this chart!!) 1. Light My Fire - Doors (Talk about "one of these songs is not like the others..." Ahead of it's time!)

Hi Dawn:) 10. Didn't hear this until the mid 80's 9.Yup remember hearing this as a kid 8.Another one I heard for the first time in the mid 70's .also remember seeing a made for TV (??) movie back then called Go Ask Alice. 7. Really got into them in the 80's picking up whatever 45's I could find - it's pretty safe to say that a buddy of mine and I were the only two listening to them in our High School LOL 6.I've always enjoyed this one - another single that made it's way in my collection in High School. 5.Love those keyboards! so fantastic! 4.I really liked this hearing it quite a bit in the 80's on the Saturday Night Oldies Party. 3. Woo Hoo! 2.Another Stevie Classic! 1.I first heard the 45 as a kid but I've mentioned before that I listened to the Doors heavily in High School after reading No One Hear Gets Out Alive - great band.

Hi Dawn - The summer of love marches on. Real good chart today, lots of contrasting styles. Little bit of soul, little bit of both parts of California, little bit of England, just a little bit of everything.
10. C'mon Marianne - Good song by Frankie & the Boys. Not their best, but a good one. Two songs by Frankie in the top 10.
9. Up, Up, & Away - First of what would be 7 top 10s for this very underrated group. Love this song.
8. White Rabbit - Alice in Wonderland like Lewis Carroll never meant it to be. Great song though.
7. Mercy, Mercy, Mercy - 3rd straight top 10 for the Buckinghams
6. Little Bit 'O Soul - Funny how these guys never did anything else. One of the best one hit wonders of the 60s.
5. A Whiter Shade of Pale - Procul Harum's best song.
4. Can't Take My Eyes off of You - Frankie's 2nd in this chart. For whatever reason, if was to list the top ten from 1964 - 1969, this song would probably be in it, somewhere.
3. Windy - Association's 2nd #1. Good Song
2. I Was Made to Love Her - Just past his 17th birthday and this was his 5th top 10. Great song from a great performer.
1. Light My Fire - If I was to list my top 5 songs all time, this song would probably be there, somewhere. Just one great classic rock & roll song. Hate when the oldies stations play the short version. Got have that instrumental in the middle. Great, Great song.

It has a little more of an edge than most of their other hits from that time. 'Mercy Mercy Mercy' is a good one from the Buckinghams, and 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' is such a classic. Love the organ.

'White Rabbit' has some very interesting lyrics, and I can see what you mean about it being appealing to the drug sub-culture. Grace Slick's voice is very powerful on this song. I've always been intrigued by the lyrics to 'A Whiter Shade of Pale'. It would be a good choice for Railyn's lyrics post! I agree, 'I Was Made to Love Her' is a great one from Stevie.

About 'Up Up and Away' - I absolutely agree, Pete. I really love that California soul sound. You're right about the Buckinghams - in retrospect, it's hard to believe that their hits spanned that short a time. All 5 songs are classics. I've always thought 'Light My Fire' sounded years ahead of its time also!

I've seen the book Go Ask Alice in used bookstores, and it looks interesting! I've never seen the movie, though. LOL about the Buckinghams! But I know what you mean, Ken - I was one of only a few people in my high school that liked 60's and 70's music. I had tapes of ELO and the Beatles in my car back then, and my friends used to wonder why I liked listening to such "old" music! ;D

I couldn't agree more about the 5th Dimension being underrated these days. They had so many good hit singles, and yet oldies radio only plays a few of them. That's a good point about 'Little Bit O'Soul' being their only hit. I'm also surprised they didn't have any follow-ups to it. Like you, I prefer the unedited version of 'Light My Fire'. It's a bit long, but that instrumental part is great!

Almost caught up. My parents were married this year, and Dad ultimately trotted off to VietNam.
10) I'm sure I have this one, but I can't place it. 9) I have this on an album of theirs. I enjoy it. 8) Love this one. I read Go Ask Alice. I never saw the movie. I thought it was a must-read for every young adult girl. It was a diary kept by a girl who slowly decended into drug addiction. Her parents re-locate while she's in high school, and she has a hard time adjusting and gets in with the wrong crowd. She runs away from home, lives on the streets, it's really sad. Several times she tries to get clean and can't. She has LSD flashbacks, and ultimately dies at the end (od). It's supposed to be a true story. Sometimes it seems a bit far fetched, but then other times I can't imagine that anyone who hadn't been there could be writing that stuff. There are gaps in the book when she's living on the street and apparently using hard. Coincidentally, Alice's Adventures In Wonderland and Alice Through The Looking Glass are 2 of my favorite books. 7) I'm not familiar with this one. 6) This one's ok. 5) I mentioned once before about a freaky video they play on VH1 Classic on the 60's Generation show. It's modern, probably made in the 80s. It's confusing and I'd love it if someone saw it to please explain it to me. It has to do with gambling. The guy who was the cop in Steven King's Christine is the main character, and a woman. They're in a house in the middle of nowhere, dressed like they're in the 1920's. The deck of cards he uses are weird. Then at the end, a limo (a modern one)comes and picks one of them up. 4) It's ok. Not one of my favorites that they do. 3) Again, passable. Not one of my favorites. 2) This one's ok. 1) An absolute classic. Had to buy it on cd - in fact - first cd I bought for the big rack system when we bought it.

Go Ask Alice sounds like a really interesting book! The next time I see a copy in a used bookstore, I'll have to pick it up. The Lewis Carroll Alice books are great, too. I especially love the chapter about the Mad Tea Party! I've never seen that video of 'A Whiter Shade of Pale', but it does sound pretty strange!
