Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

At this point, I am sick of Our House. MTV and VH-1 played the crap out of it. Saw the video to House of Fun the other day. That tune's better than I remember.
She Works Hard For the Money was not bad, but not on par with her 70s classics.
Actually didn't mind the Duran Duran song.
The real winner here is Stand Back.
The rest are way too overplayed for my tastes, especially number 1.

10. Our House - Madness Though mostly known as a ska band in their native UK, this band broke through with a very radio friendly tune. Good song that I still enjoy.
9. Stand Back - Stevie Nicks One of her better solo records. The video wasn't very creative though
8. She Works Hard for the Money - Donna Summer Now this had a pretty good video. At this point Donna has fully transitioned from disco queen to pop chanteusse. This tune would have had the Cosmopolitan seal of approval, I'm sure.
7. Wanna Be Startin' Somethin - Michael Jackson Michael gets pissed. We are all scared...but we can't help but dance to it. The "Thriller" hits continue...he's only halfway done.
6. Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) - Eurythmics Infectious synth beats and keyboards plus Annie Lenox's excellent voice make this a classic. Strange video..what's up with the cows?
5. Is There Something I Should Know - Duran Duran Utter garbage. However, Duran Duran could have released an a capella version of "Itsy Bitsy Spider" at this point and STILL hit the Top Twenty.
4. Never Gonna Let You Go - Sergio Mendes Brazillian keyboardist has his biggest hit with vocals from an unknown. That woman could sing, surprised we never heard more from her.
3. Flashdance...What a Feeling - Irene Cara A positive song about living your dreams. Good stuff but overplayed back in '83.
2. Electric Avenue - Eddy Grant Sounds good cranked up on the Bose speakers of my Altima. I like this track a lot. "We're gonna rock some too..."
1. Every Breath You Take - Police Great song. Horribly overplayed even to this day. One of the best of the 80's. Drums, bass, violins and lead vocals are all nearly flawless.

10. A buddy of mine LOVED this track Back in High School. I thought it was a fun tune -great to sing along with . Found a copy of the 45 a few years ago. 9.Remember taping this off the radio back then. 8.Thought it was a good song - Friday Night Video's loved playing this. 7.I thought this was ok - really burned out quickly on the tunes from Thriller. 6.Didn't care for this at all at first - all those synthesizers and drum machine's ! LOL - But a buddy of mine (the same one who liked Madness) just loved The Eurythmics so I slowly started to like it more and became a fan. 5. My sister in law's sister (got that ? LOL was a Huge fan (she was a year behind me in High School) she had crushes on all the guys ,posters on the wall -you name it I really liked Hungry Like The Wolf - this was Ok I guess. 4.I really liked this at the time and it recieved alot of airplay - it's seems to have been forgotten about now. after this " poof" nothing . 3. I've mentioned before that we played this in stage band - it was alot of fun (for me especially) and we played it often and it sounded good. 2.Another fave from '83 1.I loved this then and love it now.

Hey Dawn! Not one of my favorite charts today. About half are good ones, but you can keep the rest. I like Flashdance. I think it's because of Irene Cara. As I've said, Even tho I'm not an '80s dance music fan, I like her energy and her voice. Sweet Dreams is a cool song. It doesn't sound very '80s to me. It reminds me of an earlier era song, but I can't put my finger on it. Oh well, I like it, anyway. Every Breath You Take - Overplayed - still like it. Never Gonna Let You Go, Our House, Stand Back - Not bad. Eddy - Eh Donna, Michael, and Duran -- no thanks.

Our House--Good song. Haven't heard it in awhile, surprisingly. Stand Back--Best song on the list today. Stevie's great! She Works Hard for the Money--WAY overplayed song and video back then. I'm still kinda tired of it today. Wanna Be Startin' Something--Right now, that is the ONLY line in the song that I can think of. It just keeps going over and over in my head. LOL! Sweet Dreams--IIRC, doesn't the intro to this sound exactly like Corey Hart's "Sunglasses at Night"? Anyway--this is an ok song. They had some that I liked better. Is There Something I Should Know--Never could stand Duran2. In fact, I really don't remember this song, cuz I always tried to avoid it and the group whenever I heard 'em on the radio. ;D Never Gonna Let You Go--Kinda sappy, although I think I do have the 45 somewhere. Flashdance--Love this song, love the movie. Saw it many, many times back in the day. I have the soundtrack on vinyl. Listened to it a LOT back then. 'Twas very enjoyable to my young adult ears. Electric Avenue--Not bad, but somewhat overplayed. Every Breath You Take--I feel about the Police the way I feel about Duran Duran. Was never a fan. And this song is played WAY too much, even today.

Great year!
10) LOVE this one. Such an underrated group over here. This one is as good as One Step Beyond or House Of Fun (which I can see every now and then thanks to VH1 Classic). 9) This one wasn't too bad. Not a big fan of her solo stuff. 8) Love Donna Summer, but this one was only passable. 7) I was beginning to not like Michael. I thought he was saying "My mamma said yo mamma stole my moccasins" at the end. 6) My husband says this is the first non-country-type song he ever heard. His dad died, and they moved from the sticks into the city and they had cable (and MTV). 5) YAY! My guys! This is a great one. 4) It's ok. A bit overplayed. 3) I once liked it. Never liked the movie. 2) Great fun. Better than Romancing The Stone. 1) One of my all time favorites. Never get tired of it.

Hi Dawn - One of the better charts from 1983. Actually know a couple of songs here.
10. Our House - A really good song from a really good group. Since I didn't get MTV back when it was in the charts, I never really got tired of it.
9. Stand Back - Another classic hit from Stevie.
8. She Works Hard for Her Money - A good song, but like so many of her 70s hits, I got tired of hearing it over & over & over again.
7. Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' - Ok song.
6. Sweet Dreams - Great song from a great group. I never really get tired of hearing Annie Lenox's voice. My 2nd favorite song by them.
5. Is There Something I Should Know - Not one of my favorites by Duran, Duran.
4. Never Gonna Let You Go - Never really liked much that Sergio Mendes did, including this one.
3. Flashdance - Another overplayed song from an overrated (imo) soundtrack.
2. Electric Avenue - I know this song gets knocked a lot, but I kinda liked it. Nothing special, just a fun song to listen & dance to.
1. Every Breath You Take - The Police are one of my favorite groups from the 80s, and this is one of their better songs.

I like 'Every Breath You Take', but it's true that it has gotten quite a bit of airplay over the years.

'Sweet Dreams' is such a great song - love the synths, and I agree that Annie has a superb voice. I've never seen the video, though. Leza Miller was the vocalist on 'Never Gonna Let You Go'. It is surprising that she didn't pursue a solo career, as she sounded great on that song.

I never really had crushes on the Duran Duran guys, but I loved their music back then, and still do. I did know of quite a few girls in high school like your sister-in-law's sister that really liked them! You're right about 'Never Gonna Let You Go' - it did seem to just disappear not long after it was popular. I loved playing the cool songs of the day in band. We never played 'Flashdance', but I imagine it would sound great, with all the brass and percussion!

I used to watch The Electric Company on PBS when I was a kid, and she was a regular on the show when she was about 12 or so, back in the early 70's. Even then, she was a great singer, with a lot of power in her vocals.

You are absolutely right about the intros to 'Sweet Dreams' and 'Sunglasses at Night' - they do sound very similar!

It is surprising that this group didn't receive more acclaim here, as their sound was right in step with the times. 'Is There Something I Should Know' is one of my favorite Duran Duran songs. Their music really brings back a lot of memories of high school for me.

I didn't have MTV back then either - I think it was sometime in the late 80's when our area's cable system finally added it to their lineup. I like 'She Works Hard for the Money', but agree that it did get a lot of airplay back then.
