ray Conniff on the chart? I don't remember that!
"They're Coming to take Me Away,ha ha!". The utter pinnacle of Western music! It all went downhill after this. The day it came out I went to the Smitty's store to buy the single, and the guy at the counter said "I'll bet you're here for that crazy person song along with everyone else".

Hi Dawn - Some great songs on this chart
10. Somewhere, My Love - A standard from a great movie, Doctor Zhivago
9. Mother's Little Helper - The Stones keep rolling along.
8. Sweet Pea - A good song, kind of hokey, more of a throw back to the early sixties.
7. Hanky Panky - Another hit from Tommy & the boys
6. I Saw Her Again - Third straight top 5 from the Mamas & Papas
5. They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haa - A Dr. Demento favorite
4. The Pied Piper - Not a big fan of Crispian St. Peters
3. Summer in the City - #1 summer song ever. Saw the Spoonful live a couple months ago with three of the original members. They still sound great.

1. Wild Thing - A sports anthem favorite. great song.

I know all but number 10.
The Stones song I am a little sick of. But pretty cool as it was one of the earliest songs to talk about drugs.
Sweat Pea is ok, a little lightweight.
Hanky Panky is still a cool song.
I Saw Her Again and Summer in the City, no matter how much play they get, I still love.
Couple of novelty tunes in They're Coming to Take Me... and Lil Red Riding Hood.
Pied Piper sounds more like one of those early 70's one hit wonders to me.
Sick of Wild Thing.

10. Somewhere, My Love – Ray Conniff & the Singers (Nice melody, soothing) 9. Mother’s Little Helper – Rolling Stones (good song, but the flip, "Lady Jane" is WAY better!) 8. Sweet Pea – Tommy Roe (See my post on the opinion poll the day we did Tommy Roe for a funny story about this song. asside from that, I like it.) 7. Hanky Panky – Tommy James & the Shondells (Good, but they would go on to do better songs. Still, it was only their first hit, and quite risque for '66!) 6. I Saw Her Again – Mamas & the Papas (One of their best. Love their harmonies!) 5. They’re Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa! – Napoleon XIV (This song was probably the fastest drop off the chart of the entire 60's. I used to like to play the 45 as well as the b-side when I was a kid). 4. The Pied Piper – Crispian St. Peters (Never got into it, I don't hate it, I just never think about it). 3. Summer in the City – Lovin’ Spoonful (Classic!) 2. Lil’ Red Riding Hood – Sam the Sham & the Pharoahs (Passable, I like it better than Wooly Bully) 1. Wild Thing - Troggs (EEEH, They did other songs I like much better!)

10. I've never really heard that much Ray Conniff . Although I have come acrossed quite a few of his albums at garage sales and swap meets . I know that a couple of his tunes are in the movie Good Morning Vietnam but have no idea what the titles are. 9.Good Stones tune! 8.Tommy - I like it! 7.oh yeah! love that garage band type sound that the record has . Great stuff. I first heard this on Ktel's Flashback Fever. 6. I love Denny's mistake on the vocal (he comes in too soon) the harmonies as always just perfect. 5.Found this 45 while in High School 4. I love this track!! this is so good. I have the 45 as well. 3.One of the ESSENTIAL summer tunes. 2.Great novelty tune from Sam 1.I remember seeing The Troggs perform on Much Music (Canada's answer to MTV) back around the mid 80's. They sounded great! and Reg was saying that they had to perform this during their live shows at least twice. I never tire of it.

Seven years before my time! Mom would have finished school. Both mom and dad would be working at the Milton Shoe Factory (that's where they met). That place has been long out of business, along with the steel mill where my grandpa worked, ACF (they make railroad cars) will soon be out of business - 500 employees down to 75, and Chef Boy-Ar-Dee (the real Hector Boiardi lived in Milton) has been sold so many times that I don't even remember what it is anymore and they will more than likely be closed soon too. Such is the plight of this area - it's very industrial. Oh well, enough sad stuff....
10) Um...can't imagine this one being with the other songs.... 9) Great song. I remember my mom explaining it to me. 8) A bit bubblegummy, but I love the organ and the funky beat. 7) I still think about Carmine on Laverne and Shirley.. 6) My mom got me into these guys - she kind of looks like Mama Cass and sounds a lot like her too. 5) A classic novelty song. 4) Eh. No thanks. 3) Great song. Another group my mom got me into. 2) One of my dad and husband's favorites. 1) I used to love this one, but I got tired of it.

It's a mid-60s chart, and the Beatles are nowhere to be found!! Some good ones here. Somewhere My Love (Lara's Theme) - This, however, is not one of the good ones. Yes, the movie was great, but I never cared for this type of a song interpretation. Mother's Little Helper - One of the better ones from the Stones. Another hit among the drug subculture. Sweet Pea - Tommy Roe did some good bubblegum (Sheila, Dizzy), but this one was bad bubblegum. Hanky Panky - Fun song, but Tommy would do much better later. I Saw Her Again - Great song - faux pas and all! They're Coming To Take Me Away Ha Ha - Sick, sick, politically incorrect garbage. I love it! The flip side is, of course, the same song backwards. But up until I read in post about this song (I think it was either Ken or Pete) about the followup, They're coming to Take Me Away Again, I was unaware of the followup. I've since checked it out, and I agree with Ken or Pete that it was funny but not nearly up to the original. The Pied Piper - This was not bad, but not nearly as good (IMO) as the original by the Changing Times that came out a year earlier and barely cracked the Top 100. Summer In The City - Good solid tune. I like it a lot, but it's not my fave Spoonful. Li'l Red Riding Hood - Top 250 stuff!! Love it! Wild Thing - Another Overplayed Top 100. But a good song.

I was a little surprised to see the Ray Conniff song on the chart myself. I had always been under the impression that his songs were from earlier in the 60's. LOL about Napoleon XIV's song! It must have been quite popular back then!

It's always fun to listen to, though. My best friend from high school had the 45, and she would often sing along with it, changing the lyrics to "Oh, Anthony, won't you be my boy", after her boyfriend at the time! That's great that you saw the Spoonful live! It's good to know they're still playing together.

That's true about 'Mother's Little Helper' - I think it and 'Kicks' were the first two major hits to talk about the issue. I agree about 'I Saw Her Again' and 'Summer in the City'. I've heard those songs many times on the oldies stations, but never get tired of them.

That guy must have really liked that song! ;D I'm the same way about 'The Pied Piper' - for some reason, it never really comes to mind for me. I agree about the Troggs - I think 'Love is All Around' and 'With a Girl Like You' are both better songs.

As I mentioned to mc, I was a little surprised to see him on the chart, as I've always thought his songs were older than that. That's true about the albums - I see those quite often at garage sales and secondhand shops! I think Denny's mistake on 'I Saw Her Again' really adds a nice, unexpected touch to the song. I'm glad they decided not to rerecord it.

That sounds similar to the area I live in - even though the unemployment rate is very low in general, a lot of businesses (particularly industrial) have closed recently, and two of my aunts and an uncle lost their jobs because of it. Mama Cass had a wonderful voice - good range, with a lot of power in her vocals. It's a shame that we lost her at such a young age. I really like the Lovin' Spoonful's music also. One of these days I need to get an updated greatest hits on CD.

I agree, it is strange that there are no Beatles songs on the chart! This would have been right before their last concert in Candlestick Park. I like 'Hanky Panky', but like you, I prefer some of his songs that came later on. That's interesting about the flip side of 'They're Coming to Take Me Away' - I don't believe I've ever heard that one. I'll have to try to find the follow-up to it also!
