Let's take a look at the songs that were popular 35 years ago. These were the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on August 17, 1968.
10. Hurdy Gurdy Man – Donovan 9. Grazing in the Grass – Hugh Masekela 8. Sunshine of Your Love – Cream 7. Turn Around, Look at Me – Vogues 6. Stoned Soul Picnic – 5th Dimension 5. Light My Fire – Jose Feliciano 4. Born to Be Wild – Steppenwolf 3. Classical Gas – Mason Williams 2. Hello, I Love You - Doors 1. People Got to Be Free - Rascals
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Ok. My cousin would have been born - he's the oldest.
10) This one is ok - I like others better by him. 9) If this is the instrumental, then fine - if it has the lousy words, then pass. 8) This is a good song. I like it. 7) Eh. 6) It's ok. A bid weird. 5) Love this song but not by him. 4) Got WAY tired of this song. 3) Love this one. 2) Good song. 1) Eh.

Hi Dawn:) - another fine late 60's chart
10.This was one of the first 45's I bought of Donovan's. fine drumming from John Bonham
9.Always liked this! first heard it back in the early 80's If I remember right on Gary Owens Soundtrack of the 60's radio show.
8.Simply a classic - Cream were amazing
7.This is not one of The Vogues tunes that I'm familiar with but I had a listen to it and wow is it good! Their harmonies were really something.
6.A fine tune from the 5th Dimension heard it often when I was little - nice memories.
5.I remember hearing Jose's version as a kid and always liked it. Bought a copy back in the 80's.
4.Never get sick of hearing this! I have it on 45 , And CD - I especially like the "Easy Rider" version with the motorcycle sound effect at the beginning.
3.Amazing guitarist . Remember when Lisa "played" this in a Simpsons episode.
2.Heard this back in 1980 for the first time . Amazing tune from the guys.
1.Love this so much - among their very best!

Hey Dawn! If I answer a Sunday post on Monday morning, does that mean it's still Sunday? Hurdy Gurdy Man - I really like some of Donovan's songs and really can't stand others. Unfortunately, this falls into the latter category. Grazing In the Grass - Not bad. (better than the vocal version). Love the cowbell. Sunshine of Your Love - Overall, it's a fine song. Best of all, it brought Cream to the masses. Worst of all, it was terribly overplayed in the day. Turn Around Look At Me - OK, I guess, but I liked the earlier Vogues (You're The One, Five OClock World) A LOT better. Stoned Soul Picnic - another pre-Aquarius song that I didn't care for. Light My Fire - I like the idea of hearing totally different interpretations of a song. That said, however, I much prefer the Doors' version. Born To Be Wild - One of several late '60s songs that you can list under "Classic" Classical Gas - One of my top 5 instrumental faves of all time. Woo Hoo!! Hello I Love You - Not bad, but not the Doors best. I wonder what Jose would have done with this one?? People Got To Be Free - A "preachy" song. Not a very clever orchestration either. No thanks!

10. I know this is sort of considered a signature tune of his, but it's not a fave, by an artist I otherwise like a lot.
9. Nowhere near as good as the non instrumental version!
8. Another classic guitar riff, but another tune I am sick of.
7. I believe I have this in a handful of hand me down 45's from my brother, but I don't know how it goes.
6. Don't know how this goes either.
5. Sick of the Doors version, but I'll take it over this one anyday!
4. A classic. Which of course means it's overplayed and I am sick of it!
3. Cool tune that my timeless rock station has picked up playing a lot.
2. Kinda dull and simplistic.
1. Cool tune. Actually got the original album on vinyl when my uncle's friend dumped a bunch of old albums on him.

I was just about ready to make my entrance into the world! I agree about Donovan - 'Hurdy Gurdy Man' is a good song, but not quite on a par with, say, 'Wear Your Love Like Heaven', or 'Sunshine Superman'. This 'Grazing in the Grass' is the instrumental one.

Like you, I think I prefer their version, although this one is pretty good, too. I love the lyrics to 'Turn Around, Look at Me' also. It and 'Five O'Clock World' are my favorites of theirs. I've heard 'Born to Be Wild' many times, but like you, I never get tired of listening to it. That song rocks!

I agree, 'Sunshine of Your Love' is definitely a classic! Cream had so many great songs back in the day, and this was one of their best. That Vogues tune is really wonderful, isn't it? I wish I heard it more often on the oldies stations here. The guitar playing on 'Classical Gas' is absolutely brilliant! Love that one!

Hey H2! Sounds good to me! I like that cowbell in this version of 'Grazing in the Grass' also. It adds a nice, unexpected touch to the song. 'Classical Gas' is one of my favorite instrumentals as well! A timeless classic. LOL about 'Hello, I Love You'! ;D I thought Jose did a really nice job with 'Light My Fire', but I don't think he would have much success with this one.

The oldies station here has started playing 'Classical Gas' also, and it's always great when it comes on! That's pretty cool about your having that original Rascals album! I don't know much of their music beyond the hits, but I imagine their album cuts are great!

Hi Dawn - Love those summer charts from the 60s.
10. Hurdy Gurdy Man - Not a favorite, but a good song.
9. Grazing in the Grass - Good intrumental version of this song. Really like it.
8. Sunshine of Your Love - Rock classic from the Cream. One of my favorites.
7. Turn Around, Look at Me - Vogues did quite a few good songs. This one's my favorite.
6. Stoned Soul Picnic - Another top 10 for this long overlooked group.
5. Light my Fire - Although a good song, no where near as classic as the original.
4. Born to be Wild - A "road" classic. "Get Your Motor Running"
3. Classical Gas - One of the best intrumentals ever.
2. Hello, I Love You - Another Doors classic
1. People Got to be Free - Probably my favorite by the Rascals.

I agree, this is a really good chart. You're right about the 5th Dimension being overlooked. They had such a great sound, and many top 40 hits, yet are largely forgotten today, and that's a shame. I love that lyric in 'Born to Be Wild'!

WOW, What a MIX!! Only in the 60's could The Vogues and Steppenwolf be in the top 10 at the same time!
All good! Not a bad one in the bunch!

WOW, What a MIX!! Only in the 60's could The Vogues and Steppenwolf be in the top 10 at the same time! All good! Not a bad one in the bunch! There is a pretty wide range of styles here, I agree. That's one of the things I love most about older music - there was so much variety, unlike today.
