Let's go back 33 years today. These were the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on August 22, 1970.
10. Tighter, Tighter – Alive & Kicking 9. I Just Can’t Help Believing – B.J. Thomas 8. Band of Gold – Freda Payne 7. Patches – Clarence Carter 6. Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours – Stevie Wonder 5. In the Summertime – Mungo Jerry 4. War – Edwin Starr 3. Spill the Wine – Eric Burdon & War 2. (They Long to Be) Close to You – Carpenters 1. Make It With You - Bread
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

I only have a few comments.
In the Summertime - If this is the tune I'm thinking of, I love it. There's just something about that background (choonk-cha-choonk, choonk-cha-choonk) that I like.
War - Also love this song. Not only are the lyrics great, but the song as a whole is just cool.
(They Long to Be) Close to You - I love anything that the Carpenters have done, but this is probably my favorite of their songs. The lyrics are beautiful and Karen Carpenter's voice is at its best. Amazing song.

Hey Dawn! This chart is quite good, and features a couple of breakthrough hits at the top. 10. Tighter, Tighter - good song. They had a fine sound with good harmonies. Surprised they never went anywhere. 9. I Just Can’t Help Believing - BJ was crankin' them out back then. This one was just OK. 8. Band of Gold - Good beat and melody. Very strange lyrics! (Railyn...where are you? ;D 7. Patches - Clarence borrowed a title from Dickey Lee and used a fairly trite theme, but pulled it off well. 6. Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours - Stevie had a bunch of hits back in that time that all sounded fairly similar. - but this is one of the better ones. 5. In the Summertime - Eh. Never much cared for the Skiffle Group sound. 4. War - The classic anti war song. Like it or hate it, Edwin stated his case well. R.I.P. 3. Spill the Wine - What were these guys on? 2. (They Long to Be) Close to You - The Carpenters had a couple of earlier songs, but this really got them noticed. What a great voice Karen had! R.I.P. 1. Make It With You - The breakthrough song for this group. It put David Gates' writing and singing on the map. Super!

How bad can a chart from 1970 be? Not bad at all!
Some all time faves here!
10. Love this tune! Placed very high on the INSANE list. Written by Mr. Tommy James!
9. Actually don't know this one-if it's anything like Hooked on a Feeling, then it's good!
8. Good tune, enjoy hearing it once in awhile.
7. My dad had this on his jukebox at one point. Nice, sad song.
6. Not a fave of mine from Stevie, but not bad either.
5. Always annoyed me! My buddy and I always make fun of this tune.
4. Tired of it.
3. From War to War! Love this tune, have the re-issue single. "But there I was!"
2. A classic from this brother and sister team.
1. Basically, I love all of Bread's big hits. No exception here!

1970 was a phenominal year, to me, this is one of the WEAKER charts of that year! Not that these songs are bad, but that shows just how GOOD music was at this point!
10. Tighter, Tighter – Alive & Kicking (My fave on this chart. Gotta love that trumpet!) 9. I Just Can’t Help Believing – B.J. Thomas (I can't place this.. I know I have it, I'll need to give it a listen.) 8. Band of Gold – Freda Payne (AWESOME!) 7. Patches – Clarence Carter (ehh..) 6. Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours – Stevie Wonder (I always thought this came earlier... Either way, LOVE it!) 5. In the Summertime – Mungo Jerry (Fun, but I have to be in the mood for it.) 4. War – Edwin Starr (Powerful statement, but I'm tired of it.) 3. Spill the Wine – Eric Burdon & War (Oh, yeaaaaah!) 2. (They Long to Be) Close to You – Carpenters (Like "We've Only Just Begun" better, but not bad.) 1. Make It With You - Bread (2nd fave on this chart. I LOVE all of the Bread hits, this was the first one I knew.)

Karen's voice is wonderful, and perfectly suited for beautiful love songs such as 'Close to You'.

Like you, I'm surprised that Alive & Kicking never had any hits other than 'Tighter Tighter'. They had a great sound, right in step with the times. The lyrics to 'Band of Gold' are odd, I agree. I've heard that song many times, but never really gave the lyrics much thought until recently. Why were they in separate rooms??! I've always loved Bread's music, and this is definitely one of their best. David Gates is often overlooked nowadays as a songwriter, but his songs have a timeless quality that still sounds wonderful today.

I didn't know 'Tighter Tighter' was written by Tommy James, but now that you mention it, it does have a similar quality as some of his later hits with the Shondells. Very well done! Here's a link to a clip of 'I Just Can't Help Believing': www.mymusic.com/product.asp?curr=0&myptr=addany&muzenbr=150549. I've always liked this one from B.J. 'Spill the Wine' is a cool tune, I agree. Love the flute parts in it!

'Signed, Sealed, Delivered' is a great one from Stevie! I like Peter Frampton's cover of it also. One of these days I need to get my flute out and start practicing again. I would love to learn the parts to 'Spill the Wine', 'Colour My World', 'Strange Way', etc. Bread's music brings back so many memories of my childhood - like you, I remember hearing their songs often back then. Wonderful songs!

That trumpet in 'Tighter, Tighter' does sound great. I remember first hearing that song back in the late 80's, and I've loved it ever since. I think that 'Make It With You' was the first Bread song I knew also. It's one of my favorites of theirs, second only to 'The Guitar Man'.

Dad would have been discharged from the Air Force (they wanted him to re-inlist but would not guarantee him that he wouldn't have to serve another tour in VietNam so he said no). He wuld have just gotten his job at International Paper where he worked up until mid-2001, when the plant had been sold several times. He saw the writing on the wall and took early retirement. The plant closed for good last spring, and is due to become a shopping center soon.
10) This one is ok, but not a favorite. 9) I can't place this one. 8) I saw the request, so I'll have this one up later. 7) My dad loves Clarence. I remember this one well. 6) It's not bad, but not one of my faves by him. 5) Eh. Got tired of it. 4) Again, got tired of it - makes me think of Seinfeld every time. 3) LOVE this one. Funky! 2) Eh. Too many weddings!!!!!!!!!!!! 1) EW! My mom loves them - I can't stand them.

Around 2000, the plant ran into financial difficulties, and closed in late 2001. Last year, it was torn down, and a large shopping center was built in its place - in fact, construction is still going on in the last few stores. H2 is right - 'Band of Gold' would be a great song for your lyrics post!

Thomas' music a lot, but it doesn't get much airplay on the oldies stations these days, unfortunately. This was a good one from him. I agree with what you said about 'War'. It's a very powerful song that really makes you stop and think.
