Honky Cat - Okay, I've never actually heard this song, but this is one of the coolest titles I've ever heard of!
All I know here is Brandy (You're a Fine Girl), and I really like this song. I have it on the Charlie's Angels soundtrack. I especially love that album's intro to the song with Tom Green.

Hey Dawn! Basically nine good-to-super songs and, IMO the biggest dog by the Dogs.
10. I'm Still in Love With You - Al Green This is the one of Al's that stands out above the rest in my mind. It's the only one of his that I recognize instantly without having to think "now which one is that?". Good song.
9. Honky Cat - Elton John - Not his best but good nonetheless. 8. Brandy (You're a Fine Girl) - Looking Glass Always liked this one.
7. Rock and Roll Pt. 2 - Gary Glitter - Sometimes I really LOVE this song. The "sometimes" is when I'm at the MCI center and the Washington Capitals have just scored a goal. ;D
6. Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress) - Hollies - The Hollies do a great job with a hard rock song -- but what are they saying?
5. Back Stabbers - O'Jays - Good song -- but was it ever prophetic. Backstabber? OJ??
4. Saturday in the Park - Chicago -- You don't usually think of Chicago songs as beeing "catchy". This one is catchy.
3. Alone Again (Naturally) - Gilbert O'Sullivan -- This was a fine song. Depressing, but fine.
2. Baby Don't Get Hooked on Me - Mac Davis Maybe Mac's best.
1. Black & White - Three Dog Night -- Sing-songy melody, ultra-trite lyrics. Not worthy of this great band.

10. I'm Still in Love With You - Al Green Great soul from a great singer. Roll down the windows and c-r-u-i-s-e ;D
9. Honky Cat - Elton John Elton with a New Orleans flavor. Kinda cool
8. Brandy (You're a Fine Girl) - Looking Glass Mighty fine song. One of the years best. Love to sing this on karaoke nights.
7. Rock and Roll Pt. 2 - Gary Glitter Heard this a LOT in '91 when my Atlanta Braves first started having winning seasons...we would do the "Tomahawk Chop" to this. Probably better known as the "Hey Hey" song. A sports arena classic.
6. Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress) - Hollies This song kicks it out hard. Dig that guitar work. Love it!
5. Back Stabbers - O'Jays Pretty good one from these purveyors of the Philadelphia sound.
4. Saturday in the Park - Chicago As I've said many times, one of my all time favorites. This song IS my childhood. Will never get tired of it.
3. Alone Again (Naturally) - Gilbert O'Sullivan Sad song but very well executed. Don't listen to this after a breakup. I speak from experience.
2. Baby Don't Get Hooked on Me - Mac Davis Hmmm. Mac's a little stuck on himself isn't he? Weakest of this bunch.
1. Black & White - Three Dog Night Good song, tired of it long ago though.

10. I've never heard it before but it's good!
9.A very cool tune from E.J. and one of my many faves.
8.One of THE great 70's pop singles of all time.
7.My middle brother bought the 45 back then and played it over and over... excellent tune - I have his Rhino best of.
6.I love everything about it - one of '72's best.
5.Remember hearing it alot at the time - I have it on CD.
4.Love that piano intro - Such a great "feel good" tune!
3.Depressing - yes - but a good song.
2.Remember it well.
1.I've always kind of liked it - sure they had better but I didn't mind it at all.

7. Rock and Roll Pt. 2 - Gary Glitter - Sometimes I really LOVE this song. The "sometimes" is when I'm at the MCI center and the Washington Capitals have just scored a goal. ;D Ahem.......LET'S GO RANGERS!!!!!! LET'S GO RANGERS!!!! (a moment of silence for the retiring of the king of all goalies......#35........Mike Richter ) At least you're not a Islanders fan....... Ok - I was not born yet. 10) Not familiar with this one 9) Eh. 8) Not bad, but got tired of it with the resurgence of 70's music 7) And the mighty New York Rangers score another goal.... 6) It's not bad. 5) Again, not bad. I like H2's OJ joke... 4) Good song. 3) Depressing, yet catchy 2) Eh. 1) I agree w/H2 - the idea is nice, but the song is kinda weak

RANGERS ?? ?? They're the only team in the league more pathetic than the Caps. (Pathetic based on spending lots of $$ and getting nothing in return.)

Post by smittykins--70s pop RULES! on Sept 17, 2003 15:27:34 GMT -5
I'm Still In Love With You--Good song by Al. Honky Cat--Ditto, by Elton. Brandy(You're A Fine Girl)--Always liked this one; they should've had more hits. Rock And Roll Part 2--Classic stadium anthem ([glow=red,2,300]LET's GO YANKEES![/glow] ) My Mom had the 45, so I was also familiar with "Rock And Roll Part 1," which actually had LYRICS! Long Cool Woman--Great song, though I have no clue what the words are. Backstabbers--OJ? That's cold! Saturday In The Park--The first straightaway "pop" song they ever did, IMHO at least. Alone Again(Naturally)--Classic, but a MAJOR downer. Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me--Mac comes across as chauvinistic and conceited on this one(I read that he was kind of embarrassed by its success). Black & White--OK, OK, it's simplistic, it's sing-songy, but I like it, asnd it does have a neat history behind it(it was written as a direct response to the Supreme Court decision banning segregation in public schools).

8. Cool tune.
7. Kindof tired of this one.
6. See above.
5. Decent tune.
4. LOVE it. Best on here, no question.
3. Good song, but sad.
2. EH.
1. Decent, but they had SO many better.

I have it on the Charlie's Angels soundtrack. I especially love that album's intro to the song with Tom Green. Honky Cat’ is a great early Elton track, with some wonderful piano work. It’s not played too often on the oldies stations though, for some reason. I didn’t realize that ‘Brandy’ was on that soundtrack – interesting! Definitely a 70’s pop classic.

It always seems to really get the crowd psyched! Some of the lyrics in ‘Long Cool Woman’ are a little hard to understand. I just recently found out the one line in the chorus is “Just a 5-9 beautiful tall” – I never knew for sure what it was before! ‘Black & White’ took a little longer to grow on me than most of Three Dog Night’s other hits. It’s good, but there are others I like more.

I couldn’t agree with you more about ‘Saturday in the Park’. Listening to songs such as that one and the Spinners’ ‘Games People Play’ always take me right back to my childhood years. I can relate about ‘Alone Again (Naturally)’. I listened to it often after a very bad time in my life, and it REALLY made me depressed. I still love the song, though.

Hi Woody! ‘I’m Still in Love With You’ is a good one from Al, I agree. He made some great records in the 70’s. ‘Saturday in the Park’ is my favorite from this chart also! You can’t go wrong with early Chicago. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a reggae version of ‘Black & White’, but I think the song would lend itself well to that style.

Hi Ken! How is the rest of that Rhino collection of Gary’s? I’m not too familiar with his music, but ‘Rock & Roll’ is great! ‘Long Cool Woman’ is one of the songs that stands out from when I was very young – always loved it! Oh, that piano intro to ‘Saturday in the Park’ is wonderful! One of these days I’ve got to learn it on the piano! (I can play the arpeggios to ‘Colour My World’ – that’s really cool!)
