Believe it or not, this particular version of this song used to get played on some of the easy-listening stations my mom listened to when I was a kid. Go listen to it here. WARNING: high saccharine content!!!! www.ballroomrecord.com/main.html?item=81&item_no=214000000124&jnl=2140&cat=det(OK, it's a Japanese website, but the song is in English, so just ignore the Japanese stuff if you can't read it, and click on where it says "listen".) The group is called the Midas Touch, and this is their 1969 version of "Crystal Blue Persuasion". (You won't get to hear the whole thing here, but that's just as well. You're not missing a darn thing.) OK, go listen to it; I'll wait here... ...Cheese-o-rama, huh? Especially those "ba ba-ba baaaaa" background vocals. Anyway, I remember hearing some of their stuff on the easy-listening stations when I was a kid--and have been trying to forget it ever since. Well, not quite--I looked them up to see if I could download any of their music and see if it was as bad as I remember it being. Guess what? It is. This is the yardstick by which "schmaltz" is measured IMHO. What was really funny was looking at a used copy (although I didn't buy it) in a store, seeing the obligatory "girlie" album cover that most easy-listening albums had back then (think Herb Alpert's "Whipped Cream"--well, not quite that bad), and reading the back cover blurb in which some writer went on and on about how "hip" and "now" and "with it" this album is! Yeah right! But I just wanted to show you guys how corny it is (at least IMHO)...
