These 2 were in that second huge poll. Tied at 3.
Poco, without question.

Poco 5-1 over Mellencamp? That is rich. Not at all! Have you ever heard Poco's stuff from 69-74? Very influential stuff. Matter of fact, not that different from Mellencamp in terms of song styles, instruments used. The Hall isn't always based on who was the most popular/well known.

OK, well, first let me apologize if I sound ignorant... but seriously, I've never heard of their stuff. I looked them up in the "Top 40 Hits" book, their lineup had the likes of Jim Messina & Timothy B. Schmidt. OK I'll give you that. I listened to some samples of their top 40 singles on Amazon.com, I didn't recognize them. Well, they sound a lot like the Eagles to me. Did they influence the Eagles? Well, my point is the average guy on the street probably doesn't know who Poco is, but does know John Mellencamp. The hall of fame judges are known to be really picky, too. So, my gut feeling is... Poco's not going to the HOF.

Poco's not going to the HOF. Don't worry about it. The top 40 stuff is very commercial. Yep, had both Jimmy and Timothy B. More importantly, they had Richie Furay fresh from Buffalo Springfield, who formed the band with Jimmy from the ashes of that band. As far as influencing the Eagles (Poco was around about 3 years before them), if you look up on allmusic guide, some people at the time called the Eagles "Poco wannabes"! Poco certainly influenced the Eagles stuff like Take it Easy, Desperado and Peaceful Easy Feeling. For whatever reason, the mainstream audience never took to Poco on the Am (until their MUCH later hits like Crazy Love and Heart of the Night) and they never really found an audience on FM. You're right about your gut feeling with the Hall electors. Thus the reason for these posts. They are like so many other artists who did a lot but aren't getting recognized for it. Velvet Underground didn't have any AM hits and don't get FM play this year, and yet they ARE in the Hall. Some things you just can't explain.

Voted for Poco. I believe that John will make in before Poco, but Poco should already be in.

Sorry. I'm with John, in voting for John.
I do like Poco, but I am SUCH a HUGE fan of Mr. Mellencamp, and his mid-America style of songwriting and singing should get him in the Hall in a New York minute.
