Digging up another old thread because I have a question: Is "Viva Tirado" on any of the "Have a Nice Day" CD's? Laura, "Viva Tirado" by El Chicano is on one of the "Soul Hits of the 70's: Didn't It Blow Your Mind" CD's. It's like a "sister" series to "Have A Nice Day". I think most of them have gone out of print. The Didn't I Blow Your Mind series is great - I wish it hadn't gone out of print so quickly. I was trying to find some of the mid '70s volumes awhile back, but they're quite expensive used on half.com and Amazon.com's marketplace. Laura, Viva Tirado is also on a compilation called Rock Instrumental Classics, Vol. 4: Soul: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000003389/102-1366096-7864143?v=glance&n=5174 .

Dawn, I followed your link and looked at the list of songs on that CD. Some fun songs there! (well, the ones I know, anyway)

I think most of them have gone out of print. I can vouch for that--recently I went to a nearby record store(an independent, BTW, not a chain)to see if I could get another copy of "Have A Nice Day Vol. 19"(with "Couldn't Get It Right" by the Climax Blues Band)because the one I had cracked, and they told me they couldn't even order it because it had been deleted! GRRRRR! Anyone know if that song is available on CD otherwise?

Smitty, this page on allmusic.com www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=ADFEAEE57A16DD4CA97220CCC0365ECABB7CFE29C742F281116E495AD1A9234C9A186CF559D095CEAEFF6AB679AFF962A5500CDBC0EC5FECBC1B&sql=33:om9yxd7b5ox0lists several CDs that the song is on. You'll have to copy and paste the entire web address into your browser because Proboards apparently limits the number of characters in a link, and you may have to register for the site, but it's free.

Since this old thread was brought back, and it does center around my favorite era of music, I'd like to throw in a couple more pennies..
Regarding 45 edits, I have mixed emotions about them. Sometimes the song is severely butchered ("Beginnings" by Chicago, "Roundabout" by Yes...), but sometimes they edit out a lot of crap ("Get Ready" by Rare Earth or "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly) to make the song more enjoyable (Who REALLY sits through all 22 minutes of "Get Ready"?)
I know we've argued about his one before, but I STILL prefer the 45 edit of "Miracles" by Jefferson Starship, because I simply like it better as a concise 3 minute pop song than as a 6 minute album track. Being the fan of both "The golden age of top 40 radio" and "The 2-3 minute pop single" that I am, I like to hear the songs as they were heard in that medium. Especially 60's songs that were more compressed in their AM radio mixes.
One exception to this rule is "Light My Fire". That sloppy 45 edit totally sucked the life out of that song.
By the late 70's, I don't know why they still bothered making 45 edits. "Hot Blooded" by Foreigner and "Lyin' Eyes" by The Eagles had entire verses cut from them, and they were FM radio hits more than AM! They could have at least issued the full versions on the commercial singles and offered edits just to AM radio.
Just my opinion....

I caught a couple of these songs on YouTube last night, so I wanted to comment on this post: (btw, both of these weren't really videos by the bands, but montages of images put together by people who love to post things on YouTube ) The Mashmakhan one was ok. The Original Caste version of "One Tin Soldier" is better than Coven's more famous version IMHO. Both versions are good, and both have similar arrangements, but the Original Caste had better vocals (and they even had bgv's during the chorus; that was nice).

I gotta put myself down as a vote for "One Tin Soldier", as well--I'm partial to The Original Caste's...

Is this the one that goes something like, "Ain't nothing better for your soul than lying in the sun with your radio"? (The song I'm thinking of also has "sunny days" (or "summer days"?) in the lyric, so I think that might be it.

Definitely it, Laura....It opens thus- "Sittin' stoned alone in my back-yard Askin' myself, why should I work so hard...."

I've never understood why so few songs were included on each volume, as they could have easily had 20 or so tracks per disc, especially on the early '70s volumes.
