It was a GREAT movie! I know Ed mentioned not liking the idea of entertaining prisoners, but that was a big part of Johnny Cash, he appealed to that type of audience. That's not saying he wasn't a great talent, and he had an interesting life which deserved to be made into a movie.
Reese Witherspoon looked good as usual (hey, they actually made June Carter a BABE!), and REALLY did a good job singing. The actor who played Johnny was River Phoenix's brother (Joachim?) and had a clef lip. Somehow, I have a hard time picturing Johnny Cash with a clef lip. They should've done something with make-up to fix that. Also, sometimes he was dead-on, but he just didn't have that deep, booming voice that Johnny Cash was known for, which lost a few points with me.
Still, I enjoyed the movie and certainly recommend it!

Nice reviw Pete. I always have liked Johnny Cash and really want to see this movie. My mom saw it over Thanksgiving and she was pretty impressed with it. She was also impressed that Reese & Joaquin both did their own singing. It is to bad they couldn't have found a deep voice actor/singer to play Johnny. Thanks for the recommendation.

It doesn't really bother me that Johnny Cash appealed to prisoners, Pete. It's more that I always had the impression that they appealed to HIM. Otherwise he wouldn't have done those concerts.
I had read somewhere that Joachim Phoenix did such a great job of imitating Johnny's singing voice, that if you closed your eyes, it sounded like Johnny was singing. I thought to myself that that would have been virtually impossible. I'm glad to hear that it wasn't true. Johnny was one of those few people whose voice is SO distinctively different than anybody elses, that nobody should be able to come close to duplicating it.

That's great Pete, I also want to see the movie as well. I was Christmas shopping a couple of weeks ago in HMV and they were playing the soundtrack while I was in the store.

Joaquin, if anyone was wondering...
Personally, I thought Walk The Line was great. A lot of people are comparing it to Ray since that was the last musician biopic to come out, but really I don't think there is a comparison. The main difference between the films is the singing, actually. Jamie Foxx did none of the singing in Ray, while Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon BOTH did all of the vocals themselves. That fact rather impressed me, and Reese Witherspoon has now really gone up in my eyes. She did a great job as June Carter Cash.
What I liked so much about the movie was the fact that it humanized Johnny Cash. I was never a fan of his growing up, because he comes off as just being this cocky sort of guy, in his songs even. He's all about being a tough, rambling man and this movie made me see him as a human, with real problems and real emotions.
At times you wonder why June cared for Johnny. I mean, he really was a horrible person for so long. But in a way, it was really touching. It made me wish I could love a man that way.

I meant to comment on this post weeks ago. I saw this movie over Xmas and I loved it! And personally I think Joaquin did an AMAZING job acting and singing. Some songs took my breath away. He totally deserved the Golden Globe that he won for it last Monday.

I didn't catch this at the theater, but would like to see it once the DVD comes out. It sounds very enjoyable, and did very well at the Golden Globe Awards. I think Reese Witherspoon is a very talented actress, but had not realized she sang as well, and I'm looking forward to hearing her vocals as June.

I just saw the DVD this past Sunday. It was really, really good. I enjoyed it very much. Both Joaquin and Reese did a great job. Reese can really sing!
