I hope this hasn't been done yet, but oh well...
What's everyone's favourite musicals? Do you even like musicals?
I have a few.
Phantom of the Opera is deffinetly my favourite broadway musical. I saw it live in NYC when I went in May of 2001 with the school band for a trip. Then I saw the movie the week it opened. AMAZING, but its 10x better on Broadway!
My other favourites are:
RENT (currently obsessing over it lol) Guys and Dolls Grease Moulin Rouge

First of all, I agree about Phantom the play being better than Phantom the movie. I think this is usually true, and is probably an extension of a theory I have that we have discussed here many times called 'The version you heard first'. I used it for music that was covered later by different artists. Generally, a person tends to like the version they heard first as opposed to versions they hear later. I think its subconsciously setting the first version you hear as the standard, and every version you hear later, you compare it to the standard. Well in this case it's a "saw it first" situation, but I think it's the same thing. You saw the play, and were then looking for the movie to basically copy the play. Any place where they differed the play was "right" and the movie was "wrong." OK... enough of that. My favorite plays: Les Miserables Showboat Phantom of the Opera (saw it in Toronto in a theatre that was built specifically to house this play) Carousel Ragtime Cats (The fantastic music makes up for the lack of plot)

My favorite plays: Les Miserables Showboat Phantom of the Opera (saw it in Toronto in a theatre that was built specifically to house this play) Carousel Ragtime Cats (The fantastic music makes up for the lack of plot) Ohmygosh, I totally forgot about Cats! I've never actually seen it, but my Grandmother gave me the soundtrack (on cassette! lol) when I was really young, and I enjoy the music a lot. We also studied it in my music class back in grade 3. And you are right about the "seeing it first" thing. The first time I saw Guys And Dolls, was at my college. I was taking "Theatre Workshop" and we were putting on Guys And Dolls. I wasn't IN the play, I was just Box Office Manager (I got graded for it, rather than paid, but thats okay!), but I reserved a seat for myself on my night off, and the play was AMAZING! Then a few years later, I borrowed the movie from my then-boyfriend, and it was just alright, even though Frankie and Brando were amazing in it. My first exposure to RENT was the movie, but I really want to go see the show on Broadway. And I bet I'll enjoy the play better than the movie, cause thats what seems to happen in my case. What I like about RENT is that 6/8 of the actors in the movie, were in the Original Broadway Cast, which I think is SO cool. Not only have they barely aged in 10 years, but for people who saw the play in its original run, they don't have to "get used" to new actors, except for two, but I've read on message boards that many major RENTheads prefer the movie Joanne and Mimi, rather than the OBC ones. I'm listening to the RENT soundtrack right now again for like the bazillionth time, so thats why I'm all RENT obsessed lol.

My favorite musical is "South Pacific", both story-wise and for the songs.
Then comes "Hair" and "My Fair Lady".
When I was a kid, Phoenix had a great series of all the classic musicals, and my folks took mw to see them. I wanted to write a musical way back then , but alas had no aptitude for it.
