Well, I think this has been going well. As I've said before, songwiting is often subjective. Most times, there are no right or wrong answers. I've enjoyed reading your thoughts, and I say keep 'em coming!
I'd also like to take this time to remind you I will honor all requests, as long as I can find a credible source for the lyrics.
Today's song came in the form of a suggestion from my mother.
This one is a longtime favorite, by a very favorite artist. It's a bit of a strange one, and I feel is wide open to interpretation. I have never found any notes by the artist as to any underlying meaning, most likely because it was released more than 3 years after his untimely death. I once wrote a termpaper on him, and how his songs are all directly linked into his personal experiences one way or another. I have spent a long time searching for notes on this one to prove or disprove my thoughts, but have not been able to find any. It will be interesting to hear other people's takes on this one. If anyone knows something I don't, please share.
I give you:
NOBODY TOLD ME
By: John Lennon
Album: Milk and Honey (released 1984)
Author: J. Lennon
Everybody's talking and on one says a word
Everybody's making love and no one really cares
There's Nazis in the bathroom just below the stairs
Always something happening and nothin going on
There's always something cooking and nothing in the pot
They're starving back in China, so finish what you got
Nobody told me there'd be days like these
Nobody told me there'd be days like these
Nobody told me there'd be days like these
Strange days indeed, strange days indeed
Everybody's runnin and no one makes a move
Well everybody's a winner and there's nothing left to lose
There's a little yellow idol to the north of Katmandu
Everybody's flying and no one leaves the ground
Well everybody's crying and no one makes a sound
There's a place for us in movies, you just gotta stay around
Nobody told me there'd be days like these
Nobody told me there'd be days like these
Nobody told me there'd be days like these
Strange days indeed, most peculiar mama
Everybody's smoking and no one's getting high
Everybody's flying and never touch the sky
There's UFO's over in New York and I ain't too surprised
Nobody told me there'd be days like these
Nobody told me there'd be days like these
Nobody told me there'd be days like these
Strange days indeed, most peculiar mama.
My Opinion In A Nutshell: It is well known that John took some time off before doing his last batch of songs to clear his head and get back to basics. It's a bit tongue in cheek to me. In some sense, it sounds like a
look at the world through the eyes of someone who's been out of touch with reality for a while, and they're trying to rationalize what they see. In another sense, having spent time around people with addictions, it could also be a look at the world through clean and sober eye (which could take us back to my first comment). Any way you look at it, I think it's a great
song, and it's a shame he wasn't around to fill us in.
Favorite Line: "Nobody told me there'd be days like these, strange days indeed, most peculiar mama"
