I keep seeing ABBA popping up all over here. I'm a BIG fan. Have been since I was old enough to talk.
They were dismissed as pure pop or disco garbage in this country, but I always loved their harmonies, lush backing tracks, and the fact that all their songs told a story. Bjorn and Benny, the two men in the group, wrote and arranged all their songs - something not too often done, and another fact largely ignored.
This is one of their later tracks - one that you may not have ever heard over here, as the disco movement was long over, and ABBA was on the brink of breaking up - personally and professionally. It tells an amusing story of excess, and has an equally amusing video.
HEAD OVER HEELS
By: ABBA
Album: The Visitors
Author: B. Andersson, B. Ulvaes
I have a very good friend
The kind of girl who likes to follow a trend
She has a personal style
Some people like it, others tend to go wild
You hear her voice everywhere
Taking the chair
She’s a leading lady
And with no trace of hesitation she keeps going
Head over heels
Breaking her way
Pushing through unknown jungles every day
She’s a girl with a taste for the world
(the world is like a playing-ground where she goes rushing)
Head over heels
Setting the pace
Running the gauntlet in a whirl of lace
She’s extreme, if you know what I mean
Her man is one I admire
He’s so courageous but he’s constantly tired
Each time when he speaks his mind
She pats his head and says, "that’s all very fine
Exert that will of your own
When you’re alone
Now we’d better hurry"
And with no trace of hesitation she keeps going
Head over heels
Breaking her way
Pushing through unknown jungles every day
She’s a girl with a taste for the world
(the world is like a playing-ground where she goes rushing)
Head over heels
Setting the pace
Running the gauntlet in a whirl of lace
She’s extreme, if you know what I mean
You hear her voice everywhere
Taking the chair

And with no trace of hesitation she keeps going
Head over heels

(the world is like a playing-ground where she goes rushing)
Head over heels
Setting the pace
Running the gauntlet in a whirl of lace
She’s extreme, if you know what I mean
(she’s just one of those who always has to do whatever she please)
And she goes
Head over heels
My Opinion In A Nutshell: They got by when the disco beat was catchy and popular, but unfortunately the rest of their material is largely overlooked. I guess the Euro-sound never really caught on over here. I'm glad to see that people today really appreciate their music. BTW, they hold the world record for the largest amount of money ever turned down to perform: $2.5 Billion offered to them by a consortium of European businessmen, if all 4 original members would reunite and play (I forget how many) concerts. I think there's some real animosity going on there.......
Favorite Line: "Running the gauntlet in a whirl of lace
She’s extreme, if you know what I mean"
