A Song For Those Who Paid The Ultimate Price

I think I speak for everyone when I say that I dread this day. So many horrible images still fresh in my mind. So many emotions too close to the surface - grief, anger, sadness....... I watched a co-worker frantically trying to reach his brother and friends who, like him just a year earlier, worked in 1 World Trade Center. When his resume came in, I remember thinking, "wow - must be cool to work there". On a good note, they all made it out alive.

I think about the people of flight 93 - they would have flown over us - scared to death. We are making them a nice memorial here in PA - true heroes who never gave up.

So I dedicate this one to them. I heard it preformed at the concert last year (on September 14 - dad's birthday). It stuck with me.

That was a beautiful tribute, Railyn. I'm glad to hear that your co-worker's brother and friends made it out safely. That was a terrible day for this country, but the people who lost their lives that day will always be remembered.

It is a good song. Even thought I'm not into country, I do enjoy Charlie's stuff. It's well-written. He always finds a way to express things well.

Yeah - I was really tired one night. I was looking for the lyrics of a song to see if I wanted to try and post it, when I came across this website. I clicked on it, and saw this link about listening to their famous station ID or something. It was about 3 am, and I was half asleep when I clicked on it. I freaked when I heard it - made the hair on my arms stand up.

Brief fill-in for better understanding (as this was prob missed by most everyone here on an early YL post): my husband led a horrible childhood. Physically and mentally abused by his mother. His father was the sole breadwinner and was not often home. When he was, he wanted to relax. When my husband was 10, his father unexpectedly died. No life insurance. Lost their house. His mom re-married. My husband's step-dad is a sweet heart, but will not stand up to my mother in law. He tried to get my husband out and about when he could. He was in the National guard and took my husband to the Statue Of Liberty, and the World Trade Center. He fell in love with the towers - says it's one of his happiest memories - standing on top of the world - no one could touch him.

Anyway, it hurt him bad when this happened. It's never far from here - We have a big framed picture on the wall, a miniature WTC about 6 inches high - I wear a sterling silver WTC and 9/11/01 on my charm necklace- we have coffee table books, I made a needlepoint WTC, etc. It just creeped me out. Since it's such a presence in our house, it's always close to the surface (if that makes any sense). Now they're on top, top top of the Empire State Building. (the radio station).

I was pretty unnerved about that myself, I must say.

I'm sorry to hear that about your husband's mother's abuse. What a terrible experience it must have been for him. I can definitely understand his being so upset that day when the towers fell - it was a great personal loss for him, what the towers represented.

He was quite upset by the whole thing. He just kept shaking his head. We get through his past abuse one day at a time. It's hard, but he's a great person and deserved so much better. I can't stand being around her. She tries to play off what she did by making excuses, but it always comes back to her being the victim of something, and we should all feel badly for her - this way she has no responsibility for anything.

Through a lot of therapy, he's finally at the point where he tells her he doesn't like what she's doing or what she did, and he's not afraid to "call her" on things. We were at his stepsister's house, and she said in front of everyone that he gave her the hardest time (out of him and his younger brother - who's a "saint" to her - the "good" son). He fired it right back at her. "How many times have I been arrested? How many drugs do I do? Have I ever been in the hospital over a drug deal gone bad? Have I ever sold my body for drugs (long complex story)? How many times have I stolen from you? How many times did I have to move back in with you? And he gave you the least amount of trouble? How many grades did I fail in school? How many jobs have I had in the last 10 years - 2! How many jobs has he had in the last 5 years - 23!" She just made excuses for his brother and pointed to the fact that my husband got kicked out of technical school. He reminded her it was because she took out a loan, told the bank it was for his schooling, and then blew it on herself. He got kicked out because he couldn't pay for it.

You gotta love it!

It makes me so angry when abusive people try to make excuses for their behavior. No matter what the circumstances are, it is never justifiable to abuse a child, and I'm sorry that your husband had to experience that. I have a relative who has acted in a similar way, and her children (now adults) are still having a difficult time coping with it. I'm glad to hear that he's speaking his mind with her and holding her accountable for her behavior. Hugs to both of you.
