On video I have an episode of Later with Bob Costas where he talks with Roger McGuinn of The Byrds.
Roger tells this story of how David Crosby almost got the band kicked off The Ed Sullivan Show.
Turn Turn Turn was the song they were going to be performing so in rehearsals the producer (and Ed's son in law) Bob Precht was standing in front of the band with a stop watch keeping an eye on the duration of the tune (which was about 3 minutes or so) .
When he informed them that they would have to cut the song down Crosby went ballistic and started shouting "this our art!" , "this is our livelihood!" "we don't cut time for anybody!"
Well Bob said "fine then you're out of here!"
The Byrds manager understandably so panicked and pleaded with Bob to reconsider and to let them back on the show which he finally did and they did the program.

Great story Ken!! I have never heard that story or even heard about it! Very cool! See, I'm gonna love these posts! Ken and I both chose "scandalous" stories. They don't have to be. You can just post a nice story. But the juicier, the better!!

That's a cool story, Ken! I'm sure similar things happened to a lot of bands on Sullivan. Except those groups probably got kicked off for good!

Great story, Ken - I hadn't heard about that before. I imagine that did cause quite a stir on the set!

I had heard this story before. It's interesting - I can't see it happening today at all.
