December 8, 1961: Three brothers, a cousin and a friend from Hawthorne, California released their first record. Although they were still in high school at the time and the record only cost them a couple hundred bucks to record, the song became a hit on the West Coast and a portent of things to come for the rest of America. Today in 1961, an unknown southern California group called The Beach Boys put their first record out. And a year later, the rest of America knew "the boys of summer" when Surfin' Safari became their first national hit.

I think most of us Clicksters know that was "Surfin'". Have a recording of it as a demo as well, as put on their box set.

Who could ever have heard "Surfin Safari" or "Surfin USA" and realize that in a few years it was gonna be "Pet Sounds" and "Good Vibrations"?

I would love to find a copy of the original Surfin' 45 on Candix. It was the start of a long and successful career for the Boys.
