December 10, 1967 - A tragic day in the history of rock ‘n roll. It was today in 1967 that a chartered plane crashed into Lake Monona in Madison, Wisconsin, killing Otis Redding and four members of his backup band, The Bar Kays. Redding’s career had just started to take off with a string of R&B chart hits in 1966 and 1967 and he was just beginning to catch on with the rock ‘n roll audience in the summer of 1967after his intense performance at the Monterey Pop Festival. As a gesture of thanks to his fans in Northern California, Redding and Steve Cropper of Booker T & The MG’s wrote Sittin’ On The Dock Of The Bay. But Redding never lived to see the record became a number one hit in the winter of 1968.

Otis was a very talented, expressive singer, and it's sad that we lost him and his fellow band members at such a young age.
