Third installment.
1988
Performers
The Beach Boys The Beatles The Drifters Bob Dylan The Supremes
Early influences
Woody Guthrie Lead Belly Les Paul
Non-performers
Berry Gordy Jr.
Absolutely nothing wrong with this list! You have America's band, the number 1 British Invasion group, the premiere soul singing group (before all the Motown acts), the original songwriter, and the number 1 girl group. Leaders all around! If I HAD to, at gunpoint eliminate one.......I guess The Drifters. But I never would.
And the others in the 2 other categories are just fine as well!

Another GREAT group. No one I'd feel compelled to take out. And so glad to see Les Paul as an early influence, for I LOVE his early/mid-50's output with Mary Ford.

Hard to believe that back then, the Beatles & the Beach Boys were around for "only" 25 years... now it's almost up to 40... whoa.

Hard to argue with any of these. I wouldn't eliminate any of them. Woody Guthrie & Les Paul were great choices as early influences and it's hard to argue against Barry Gordy's contributions.

I 've always assumed that they put only a handful of artists in this year because of the magnitude of the groups. No problems with this line up.

Short list compared to the last two!
I have to admit, I wouldn't change a single one here.

An excellent class of inductees, and as others have mentioned, I wouldn't leave any of them out. I would love to get ahold of video footage of the awards ceremony from this year.

Obviously, all deserved to go in.
Just one question ... How do you put Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin in the Hall BEFORE the Beatles and the Beach Boys and Dylan and The Supremes?

Ok, the Discussions begin! This was 87, which means it was 25 years before 85, actually. The Supremes didn't release anything that early. I guess the Boys and Dylan did, and the Beatles did in England, but at this point, there was SO many artists to deal with, I think they kinda went in order.

I was thinking they went in order also (how else could you explain the Beatles not going in in Year 1) , but Marvin really started at the same time as the Boys and Beatles and Dylan was even a little earlier. -- and Aretha was later So why did they (Marvin and Aretha)go in first?

To me, this is pretty much the only year that really matters. The Boys, The Fabs, Dylan and The Supremes, everyone on the list is vital. And to top it off you got a tirade from Mike Love and a witty comeback from Bob Dylan..
