Like I said yesterday, this is like the first significant year of 70's artists with the Dead, Elton, Lennon, Marley and Rod all going in. This is a pretty strong year, no real arguements from me. I remember before that year, before the lineup was announced, I was wondering who could possibly go in. Then I went through the list going, "Oh yeah, The Dead! Oh yeah, Elton!" and so on. And the older artists that went in were placed well too. The Animals were not as strong as the Beatles or Stones, and Duane not as strong as Elvis or Ricky, so them waiting a few years made sense. With The Band, I was sorta the same way I was with Van. I'm still not a huge fan, but I know they are held in VERY high regard. If I HAD to lop off someone.........hmmmmmm......you could argue Rod or Elton because the second half of their careers slipped into AC mode, but how can you deny the beginning of Elton's career? Hell, he even influenced Axl Rose! I guess I would go for Marley, although there is no denying he brought Regae to people who never knew it. Actually surprised it took this many years for Willie Dixon to go in as an early influence.
And going back to earlier discussions.....I made a comment about Johnny Cash maybe belonging in a different category, "Outside Influences" and Dave pointed out his mainstream hits and I even mentioned how artists of today like U2 love him. Well in the same respect, what about Patsy Cline? I think she, more than any other Country female, is held in high regard in the mainstream world. She had the crossover hits, and yes, artists today still love her, as is evidenced by the tribute album done to her that went beyond Country artists.
Whattya think?
